Champions League holders Bayern Munich will try and sign Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso in the January transfer window, it has been reported.

German newspaper Bild claimed Pep Guardiola, the Bundesliga champions’ manager, wants Alonso to reinforce his midfield options and will rival Italian champions Juventus in any bid. Alonso’s former club Liverpool have also been linked with a move for the player, and may well yet have a say in the matter.

The World Cup winner, 31, has been sidelined all season with injury and has yet to show Carlo Ancelotti what he can bring to the Los Blancos team. But with less than a year to run on his deal, Alonso may be willing to assess his options before deciding on his future.

The Real hierarchy may decide that with Alonso able to leave on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season, it may be best to cash in on him in January while they can still receive a nominal fee.

The midfielder signed for the Santiago Bernabeu club in 2009 in a 35 million euro deal and has helped Real to a record-breaking La Liga title in 2011 and a Copa del Rey.
