Cordoba brings good memories for Real

The new La Liga season kicked off for Real Madrid with a home match against Cordoba last night. It was something of the unknown, since Los Blancos had only faced the Andalucian side eight times at the Santiago Bernabeu in their whole history, and it had been 42 years since the last time they met in Madrid.

Last time Cordoba played at Chamartin was February 13th 1972, when they were thrashed, going down 4-1. Visits to Los Merengues’ ground do not bring many happy memories for Cordoba, since they used to be at the wrong end of a goal fest every time they paid a visit to Real Madrid.

Prior to the 2-0 loss last night, statistics were absolutely against them, since they had conceded a total 27 goals in the eight games they have played against Madrid in La Liga (29 in nine now). It means they concede an average of three or more goals every time they face Los Blancos at the iconic stadium in the heart of the Spanish capital.

On the other hand, the have only scored four goals against Real Madrid in those nine games. Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo scored the goals as Real Madrid had a pleasant start to life in the new championship campaign, never really getting out of second gear.
