Cristiano Ronaldo has been handed a two game ban for his sending off at the weekend against Cordoba.

The 29-year-old received his marching orders after he kicked Cordoba defender Edimar towards the end of the game. The game was level at 1-1 in the 82nd minute, but luckily for the Ballon d’Or winner, team mate Gareth Bale popped up to score from the spot in the 89th minute to give Los Blancos the three points.

Ronaldo apologised for his actions and Edimar said the incident was quickly forgotten. Former Manchester United team mater Bebe, on loan at Cordoba from Benfica, called on the authorities to go easy on him. But others, such as Barcelona’s Neymar, suggested he should be given a longer ban for setting such a poor example to youngsters around the world who look up to him.

In the end it was confirmed he will sit out two games, starting with the visit of Real Sociedad this weekend. He will also miss the trip to Sevilla.

Carlo Ancelotti will feel he has enough in his squad to cope with the absence of Ronaldo, although they will no doubt miss his presence. The striker has scored 36 goals in 31 appearances in all competitions this season.
