New research carried out by high net worth intelligence firm Wealth-X has reveal Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is the wealthiest player at this summer’s World Cup.

The Portugal captain, who helped his club win the Copa del Rey and Champions League this season, is worth an estimated 170 million euros, according to the firm.

Barcelona’s Leo Messi, who will lead Argentina in the tournament in Brazil, is second on the list with an estate worth around 133 million euros.

Manchester United forward and former teammate of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney, is third, with a net worth of 71 million euros.  Wealth-X only looked at players taking part in the tournament in Brazil, and defines an until-high net worth individual as someone with assests worth more than 22 million euros.

Other players to feature on the list of wealthiest players in the tournament include 36-year-old Ivory Coast striker Didier Drogba, estimated to be worth 66.5 million, while his teammate Yaya Toure is said to have assets worth around 52 million.

With Frank Lampard (44 million) and Steven Gerrard (40 million) on the list, England is the nation with the most representatives in the top 10. Spain only has one player to feature – former Atletico de Madrid striker Fernando Torres (37 million).

Italy’s Gianluigi Buffon, also worth 37 million, was the only goalkeeper to feature on the list, largely made up of midfielders and forwards.
