Real Madrid legend Emilio Butragueno has the team should ave beaten Atletico de Madrid on Tuesday night and hopes they do not live to regret their wastefulness in front of goal.

The city rivals drew 0-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter final tie at the Vicente Calderon, extending Real’s winless run against Los Colchoneros to seven games. But the holders of the trophy had the better of the chances on the night, but found the home goalkeeper, Jan Oblak, in superb form to deny them any vital away goals.

Speaking to Madrid-based sports daily, AS, Butragueno, who has had various roles at the club down the years including player and sporting director, said he hopes the player’s can be more ruthless in the return leg next week.

He stated: “We had a brilliant first half. But we did not obtain the result we wanted because Oblak was great. The second half was more even and creating chances took it out of us. We have wasted a good opportunity because we weren’t able to cash in on our first 45 minutes.

“We came with the idea to score and to win but now we’re playing in our stadium and the support of our fans is fundemental. We’re at home and we have to win. We are the champions and we want to defend our title.”
