Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has said the arrival of new boss Rafa Benitez makes the club stronger and more likely to be in contention for the big prizes.
The Spaniard put pen-to-paper on a three-year deal after leaving Napoli at the end of the Italian league season at the weekend. He replaces Carlo Ancelotti, who was fired for failing to lead Los Blancos to success in La Liga or the Champions League.
Speaking at the unveiling of the new manager, who started his career as a youth team coach at the club, Perez said Benitez is the right man to lead the club forward.
“The requirement at Real Madrid is always high and our new coach makes us stronger in our objectives, which are the dreams of the Madrid fans,” Perez told the gathered press.
He went on to say: “Rafa breathes football and Real Madrid. He offers hard work and passion for this sport. He is a coach for whom the method makes the basis of his work. He is known for his brilliant preparation for matches and his great track record.”
Benitez has European pedigree having won the Champions League with Liverpool and the UEFA Cup with Chelsea and Valencia. He also won La Liga while in charge of Valencia.
