Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has settled a 1.6 million euro tax debt with the Spanish authorities, it has been reported.

The 32-year-old shot stopper, a hero at the Santiago Bernabeu and in Spain after helping the national team win the World Cup in 2010, paid the “fiscal settlement for his image rights”, according to a report in La Vanguardia.

The Catalan newspapers quoted sources close to Casillas’ financial advisers confirming no offence was committed and he did not deliberately avoid paying the tax.

“It was a settlement owing to discrepancies in how the norms were applied. There has not been any problem with the Treasury and it was possible for a settlement to be reached,” the source told AFP.

Casillas, who is set to play in goal in the Champions League final later this month, owns a company called Ikerca. It is now “up to date with their fiscal obligations,” the press reported.

La Vanguardia said a number of footballers have been audited by the tax authorities including Xabi Alonso ad David Villa.
