Real Madrid youngster Marcos Llorente says team mate Denis Cheryshev is distraught after it emerged the club will likely be thrown out of the Copa del Rey because of his involvement in the match against Cadiz.

The winger scored in the 3-1 first leg win in Andalucia on Wednesday night but it emerged during the game that Cheryshev should have in fact been serving a ban.

The Russian picked up three yellow cards in the competition last season while on loan at Villarreal and still hadn’t served his one-match ban. While Madrid may hope they get a reprieve, Osasuna were thrown out of the competition earlier this season for the same issue.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Llorente said his team mate was upset at events and was feeling down.

“Cheryshev isn’t doing good. He’s affected by this and is concerned. He hopes the clubs can sort this out. This wasn’t Cheryshev’s fault. He’s ok that way just quiet right now,” he commented.

And he added: “Academy players were proud to play, although the game might not ultimately count but we’ll always defend this shirt.”

He ended by saying the players must keep focusing on the challenges ahead and leave the bigger decisions to those in charge. “We are now only focused on our next game over the weekend,” he stated.
