Benfica’s midfielder Nemanja Matic has played down rumours linking him to a big European club move, after he has been reported to attrack the interest of Real Madrid and Manchester United.

In an interview with Portuguese sports newspaper Record, the Serbian said: “I’m very happy here and I wouldn’t mind staying longer.” The midfielder explained he’s not bothered about what media are talking as he’s focussed on his current team.

“Being linked with those clubs is a motivation to keep working,” he affirmed. “That is good both for me and my club,” Matic added.

Frequently compared to former Real Madrid star Fernando Redondo, Matic is a tall box-to-box midfielder with good defensive and playmaking skills. He joined Benfica from Chealsea as part of Brazilian defender David Luiz transfer to London.

“I know things wouldn’t be easy at Chealsea, because I was too young and the team had very good players. To be sincere, I didn’t expect I was going to play, they had just won the Premier League and it wasn’t easy to arrive and get minutes of play,” Matic confessed.

Sami Khedira’s injury left a door open for the Serbian’s arrival to Real Madrid, a club that had already shown certain interest in bringing him last summer. However, Carlo Ancelotti has confirmed Los Blancos will not make any signings to replace the German international.
