Ex-Colombia and Newcastle United striker Tino Asprilla has told reporters compatriot Falcao was brainwashed by Real Madrid and believed he would sign for the club last summer.
The 28-year-old striker is on a season-long loan with Manchester United but doubts over his long-term future at the Red Devils were raised at the weekend when he failed to make the squad for the match against Southampton – young striker James Wilson was preferred on the bench.
Falcao’s agent Jorge Mendes has suggested this week that his client will play for another big club – and he could even move this transfer window should Louis Van Gaal deem him surplus to requirements at Old Trafford already.
In quotes published by IB Times, retired forward Asprilla said Falcao thought he was on his way to the Santiago Bernabeu right up to the last moment.
“I don’t speak to Falcao about transfers but I think he was waiting until the very last minute for Real Madrid because Florentino Perez made him that promise. He felt betrayed by them because for two years they tried to brainwash him. Then, at the last minute, the chance came to join United and everybody wants to play for a club like that,” he said.
