Santiago Hernán Solari spoke in press conference before facing Leganés (21:30 local time) on Wednesday in the second leg of the Copa del Rey Last 32 Round. Los Blancos won 3-0 one week ago at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, so they shouldn’t have many problems to go through to the next round of the competition.

For this reason, Solari will make some changes in the line-up, although he will face the game as if the scoreboard showed 0-0. The manager told the journalists that he had Llorente, Kroos, Asensio and Courtois back on the pitch, “but not at the same pace as the other players”, so we shouldn’t expect them at Butarque. So it was a quite defensive line-up, without Isco again despite the many absences in the team. Vinicius Jr. started the game although he missed the last training sessions for a flu.

Betis started the game controlling the ball, with a lot of possession and Los Blancos tried to play at the counter attack, with Vinicius Junior and the found the net quite eartly. In the 12th minute, Benzema shot, but the ball ended up in Carvajal feet, who passed to Luka Modric. The Croatian midfielder shot from outside the box scoring the first goal of the game.

After the goal, Los Blancos didn’t suffer and they could score the second with clear chances from Valverde in a counter attack. It was a comfortable first half, without suffering and arriving to Pau’s goal with the possibility to open the gap. The first half ended in a very bad way because Karim Benzema got injured and had to be substituted in the half time for Cristo, who made his debut in La Liga.

In the second half, Betis improved. The pressure was higher and Los Blancos didn’t create any trouble to Pau. We can say that 2018 has been another successful year in the history of Real Madrid. Winning the Champions League trophy again, for 13th time, hide all the other mistakes and defeats in La Liga. Besides, Real Madrid supporters had to say goodbye to two legends: Cristiano Ronaldo and Zinedine Zidane. Besides, another coach was sacked by Florentino Pérez: Julen Lopetegui.

2018 will be remembered for the Champions League trophy won in Kiev. Gareth Bale’s amazing goal, Karius mistakes and Cristiano Ronaldo’s farewell in the Ukrainian capital will stay in the memory of the supporters. Real Madrid beat PSG, Juventus with a polemic penalty and Bayern Munich with a lot of suffering to reach that final.

In La Liga things have not going well. Los Blancos lost already the title in 2017 because they started the year 14 points behind FC Barcelona after losing El Clásico. In the new season things have not improved and they are 8 points behind the Blaugranas with one match left against Villarreal on the 3rd of January. It could be even worse because Real Madrid have lost five games so far -Sevilla, Alavés, Levante, FC Barcelona and Eibar-.

Also we don’t have good news in the European Supercup. It was Lopetegui’s first official game, but he found a defeat (2-4) against Atlético Madrid in Tallinn. Los Blancos were winning until the last minutes of the game, when Marcelo committed a terrible mistake.

Luckily, the year finished with another trophy. This time it was the FIFA Club World Cup for third straight year. Al-Ain was defeated (4-1) in the final with the goal achieved and the first trophy for Solari as a manager.

Also there were big changes in the squad. An era finished with Zidane and Cristiano Ronaldo’s departures. Julen Lopetegui arrived to the club in June and he was immediately fired from the Spanish national team. In the squad there aren’t many changes. Cristiano left but no star was signed in the summer transfer window. Only Thibaut Courtois was signed as a big star, putting Keylor Navas on the bench. Keylor Navas future is very uncertain after the last difficult months for the goalkeeper. The Costa Rican announced that he will fight for a place in the starting eleven after the club signed Thibaut Courtois for €35M. He had some opportunities with Julen Lopetegui but his position with Solari is getting even more complicated.

Navas is 32 years old and he won three Champions League titles with Zidane as the main goalkeeper of the team. However, the club has always been searching for a new goalkeeper. First, the idea was signing David De Gea, but the paperwork didn’t arrive on time. Finally, the club signed Courtois and he has taken Navas spot in the line-up.

The keeper has played only two games in La Liga this season -Girona and Getafe- conceding one goal, three Champions League matches -Roma, CSKA Moscow and Viktoria Plzen- conceding only two goals- and the Copa del Rey tie against Melilla, getting one goal. Besides, he also played the European Supercup. Overall, 8 games in the whole season, but only two of them with Solari.

Lopetegui tried to exchange both goalkeepers and, actually, many people complained because of that. Some journalists said that even Florentino Pérez wasn’t happy with this situation because he signed the best goalkeeper of the World Cup to be in the line-up. When Solari stood up as main manager, the Argentinian chose Courtois, putting Navas on the bench in all the games except the Copa del Rey ones.

Now Keylor Navas needs to decide whether to stay at Real Madrid or leave. Los Blancos could listen to offers as Kiko Casilla is still in the squad, so the goalkeeper position is well covered. Nevertheless, the supporters won’t be very happy as Navas is one of the favourite players of the club. So far, Navas has said nothing, but he has to take a decission about his future very soon.

The Portuguese star decided to leave the club and he announced it in the worst moment, after winning the Champions League. Meanwhile, Gareth Bale is the new star of the team, scoring a hat-trick in the semi-finals. The Welshman is still very far from Cristiano Ronaldo’s stats.

“I stay here for sure, I’m happy and I don’t have any intention to leave”, Llorente said after the final questioned about his future. The midfielder was set to leave the club because he had no opportunities but everything has changed in one month. “Life is like that, like football, everything can change overnight. We need to work and taking our chances”.

Another player that leaves Abu Dhabi with more importance in the team is Gareth Bale. The Welshman has always been questioned and criticized as Real Madrid player, but again he showed up in a great moment. FIFA gave him the Golden Ball of the World Cup and now he needs to continue and be more constant.

The team, again, played very poor and very relaxed, aware that their quality was much higher than their rivals.

However, the team could have more problems. In the first minute, Los Blancos could start and the hit the post after a great play by Marcos Llorente. But Al-Ain also caused some problems and Courtois was close to make a penalty and even Sergio Ramos saved a ball in the score line. But the things went in the right way when Luka Modric scored the first goal with a shot from outside the box in the first half. Los Blancos, just walking, were much better than the rival.

Real Madrid started the second half wanting to finish off the game. Actually, Gareth Bale could scored an amazing goal, like in the Champions League final in Kiev, but this time the ball went above the bar. The sentence came in the 59th minute when Llorente put a volley inside the net. It was the perfect finish for Marcos Llorente, a player who was completely forgotten and he’s been one of the best players of the tournament.

It was a final, it was an important game, so Sergio Ramos couldn’t miss his chance to score a goal. The captain scored with a header in the 80th minute and then told the supporters to shut up after being booed the whole game. Ramos always scores even if the defender already know his danger. Shiotani was able to score a great goal from a free kick. A deserved goal after the chances along the match.
