Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has praised manager Zinedine Zidane in a recent interview with FIFA.com.

The Croatia international has confessed he is excited to work with one of his idols, and explained the new manager is giving them valuable advices.

“Zidane was an idol for me. He was one of the players I admired as a child. I think every young player admired him because he was one of the best of his generation.”

Speaking of the training sessions with Zidane, Modric claimed that “every piece of advice he gives you is like gold dust and it helps you improve on the pitch.”. “I’m amazed by what he can do with the outside of his foot,” he admitted.

Asked about his relationship with Cristiano Ronaldo, Modric said: “He’s an amazing team-mate and to my mind the best player on the planet.” “Sharing a dressing room with him is fantastic. You can learn so much from him: his desire, how hard he works every day, the effort he puts in. It’s incredible,” Modric told FIFA.com

Real Madrid are famous for signing every year some of the best players in the world. However, many times they have also signed players whose contribution to the club was ridiculous, when not disastrous.

Los Blancos have spent millions in well-known stars who spent their nights in Madrid partying, and promising footballers who ended up playing for an unknown Russian team.

It is difficult to select only ten, because the list of terrible Real Madrid transfers is endless. Yet, here at Real Madrid News we have made an effort to pick those that we consider to be the biggest failures:

10. Royston Drenthe

Drenthe is a perfect example of a talented player who ruins his career for having a terrible attitude. He arrived at Madrid in 2007 on a 14-million-euro deal from Feyenoord. At the age of 20, he was one of the most promising left-backs in Europe. He never proved his quality while playing for Madrid and was sent on loan to Hercules, where he became a ‘persona non grata’. He had several traffic accidents, he intervened on a TV reality show and extended his holidays without having the club’s permission. He was loaned to Everton. When his contract with Los Blancos expired, nobody wanted to sign him, and he spent a few months at home before signing for a minor Russian team.

9. Robert Prosinecki

President Ramon Mendoza paid six million euros in 1991 to bring 21-year-old Croatian pearl Robert Prosinecki to Real Madrid. He was without a doubt one of the best players of the time, having won the European Cup with Red Star Belgrade. He was nicknamed ‘Crystal Man’ due to his multiple injury problems, and he became famous for his addiction to smoking. He never succeeded at the Santiago Bernabeu, neither at Barcelona, where he played one year after leaving Madrid.

8. Rodrigo Fabri

Very few people remember this player even played at Real. The Brazilian midfielder arrived in 1998 and only made five appearances for Los Blancos. He was loaned to Flamengo, Valladolid, Sporting and Gremio, the only club where he succeeded. That earned him a move to Atletico Madrid when his contract with Los Blancos expired, but he also failed at the Vicente Calderon.

7. Antonio Cassano

Cassano arrived at Real Madrid from AS Roma in January 2006 as a star signing for Los Blancos. Soon it became clear that he was too fat for playing at the biggest club in the world. He appeared on the newspapers very often, but only because of the scandals he was involved in. In his biography, he confessed that he often went to the games after having partied all night. Apparently, when the players stayed at the team’s hotel the night before a match, he would invite women and eat croissants after having sex with them. He was sent to Sampdoria on loan and later signed for that team on a permanent deal.

6. Dejan Petkovic

Despite being known as Rambo, Dejan Petkovic had little in common with Sylvester Stallone’s character. He was famous for his physical strength, although in truth he was a pretty average athlete. The Serbian was part of one of the worst Real Madrid teams in history. He arrived in 1995 and contributed to one of the worst seasons for the club, failing to qualify for any European competition. He was loaned to Sevilla and Racing de Santander but he barely played 21 games in his two seasons in Spain before moving to Brazil, where he had a more successful career.

5. Pedrag Spasic

Spasic is remembered as one of the worst defenders to have ever played for Madrid. He arrived at the club in 1990 on a 1.2-million-euro transfer, a huge amount for the time. The Serbian became famous for the own goals he scored, especially one superb header in a 2-1 defeat against Barcelona. He was harshly critizised by the fans and never convinced anyone at the Santiago Bernabeu. ‘Agent Spasic’ only played 22 games for Los Merengues before moving to Osasuna.

4. Jonathan Woodgate

The English defender arrived at Real Madrid in 2004 on a 20-million-euro move from Newcastle. He didn’t play a single game in his first season, as he was injured at the time of the transfer. In his first official game, he scored an own goal and got sent off. He played 14 games and spent 452 days on the sidelines in his two seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu.

3. Kaka

Many argue that Kaka has been the worst signing in Real Madrid history, especially in economic terms. At least the Brazilian sold plenty of shirts that helped get some return in the 65 million euros invested on him, which the rest of the players in this list didn’t. Kaka arrived from AC Milan in the summer of 2009 as another Galactico, considered one of the best players in the world. However, at Real he showed a terrible version of himself, and neither Manuel Pellegrini nor Jose Mourinho were able to get something good out of him. He played 83 games in four seasons and ended up returning to Milan on a free transfer.

2. Julien Faubert

In the winter of 2009, Real Madrid were in need of reinforcing the squad, and someone from the club believed that a substitute from West Ham United could be the man they were seeking. Faubert arrived on a loan move for two million euros. Everything that happened to him at the club was hilarious: he missed a training session because he thought he had the day off, he fell asleep on the bench during a game against Villarreal and his manager defined his performances as “dull.” Faubert’s signing was such a big mistake that nobody took responsibility for it, and all the parts involved have always denied they had anything to do in bringing him to Madrid.

1. Elvir Baljic

In 1999, Baljic became one of the most expensive players in Real Madrid history after completing a 22-million-euro move from Fenerbahce. He was little known in the big European leagues, but the fact that he had scored 18 games in one season in Turkey and that he was nicknamed the Rivaldo from the Balcans seemed pretty good for Los Blancos directors. Baljic made 15 poor appearances before suffering a ruptured cruciate ligament in his left knee. He was sent on loan to Fenerbahce and Rayo Vallecano with little success. The Bosnia international ended up signing for Galatasaray when his contract with Real expired. Nobody witnessed a decent performance from Baljic in a football field since that day in 1999 when he won the ‘lottery’ and signed a deal with Los Blancos.

Former Barcelona forward Ronaldinho says current star Neymar will not leave Los Cules to sign for Real Madrid.

Rumours have suggested in recent weeks that club president Florentino Perez is keen on signing the Brazil forward in a moved that would be even more controversial than Luis Figo’s switch from the Camp Nou to the Santiago Bernabeu 16 years ago.

Neymar forms part of the MSN trio at Barcelona – Messi, Suarez and Neymar – which is considered by many to be the most feared strikeforce in the world right now.

Speaking on El Partido de las 12, Ronaldinho said he can’t see Neymar moving to the Spanish capital. He added that he hopes he can one day go on and establish himself as the best in the world having finished third in this year’s Ballon d’Or.

“Neymar is reaching the top, is making history and his time will come too. I don’t think he will go to Real Madrid. Hopefully, Neymar will be the best in the world, he’s very talented and is at the best club in the world. I think he’ll get there,” he commented.

Since signing for Barcelona in 2013, Neymar has won one La Liga title, one Copa del Rey, one Spanish Super Cup, the Champions League, the Uefa Super Cup and the Fifa Club World Cup.

Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez says the players never surrender and will keep going to try and overhaul Barcelona in the league.

Los Blancos beat Espanyol 6-0 at the weekend closing the gap on the Camp Nou side to four points. Luis Enrique’s team could extend that to seven points as they still have a game in hand.

Real have now won three and drawn one since Zinedine Zidane took charge and the players have looked visibly happier in training and during matches.

Speaking after the match at the Santiago Bernabeu, Jese, who featured as a substitute, said the players have a duty to keep working hard and fighting to the death for trophies as they are at the biggest club in the world.

He stated: “This is the way we have to keep going and we have to focus in every game, be enthusiastic, in order to make the fans happy. We are Real Madrid, we never surrender, and we want to really go for it in the league.”

Discussing what it’s like to be playing under legendary former Los Blancos playmaker Zidane, he commented: “I have always had a close relationship with him. I am grateful for the trust that he is showing in me. I feel really good and we need to keep working. You can see that he is really close to players as a manager, giving affection to everyone, and he tells us both the good and the bad. He conveys a lot of motivation and joy to us. We have a taken a step up with him in terms of fitness and we are noticing it.”

Film star Ben Stiller has taken a tour of the Santiago Bernabeu as part of his tour promoting the new Zoolander 2 film.

The film, the sequel of the one released in 2001, is being premiered across Europe with the cast including Stiller, Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson, Justin Theroux and Will Ferrell all attending various events in recent weeks.

A number of promotional events have taken place in Madrid this week ahead of the February 12 premier and Stiller took a tour of the iconic Santiago Bernabeu in character as Derek Zoolander.

The actor was photographed in the trophy room with the haul of trophies Los Blancos have won down the years. He also posed for photos with his famous ‘Blue Steel’ pout on the pitch before doing his best at keepy-uppies on the field too.

And while many Madridistas may have been hoping for a last minute deal on deadine day, Stilller was the only one to take to the field to be presented with the famous white jersey. While Zoolander may push Ronaldo all the way when it comes to ensuring he’s looking his best at all times, we’re are pretty sure Zinedine Zidane is happy to continue with the Portugal frontman in the striker’s role.

Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos says the players are much happier now playing under new boss Zinedine Zidane.

The Frenchman took over from Rafa Benitez in January and has guided the club for three victories and a draw in his first four matches – the latest being a 6-0 win over Espanyol on Sunday evening.

In the images and footage emerging from training, and from the style of football played in the matches so far, the players look visibly happier than they did under the Spaniard.

Speaking to the media after the game, Ramos stated: “Under Zizou everyone is much happier, I don’t know whether it’s because of the relationship that he already had with the players from the time he worked under Ancelotti or whether it is because of the respect that we have for him. For us he’s represents an example to follow, he was a legendary figure at this club. When he gives you advice, he does it differently to any other coach, but all of the coaches who have been here have always received the utmost respect.”

And he added: “Since Zidane has come in, there has been a change in this regard. These three weeks with him have been tough, but they’ll serve us well for what’s in store during the rest of the season, as the intense part of the season approaches.”

Real Madrid have loaned Denis Cheryshev to Valencia until the end of the season. Valencia have published an official statement announcing that the player has signed a contract until June 30th.

The Russia international has arrived to Valencia and will undergo medical tomorrow before completing his first training session under Gary Neville.

Cheryshev has not played a single minute since Zinedine Zidane became the new manager, and yesterday the Frenchman confessed they were looking to loan him for the rest of the season so he could get minutes of action.

Spanish press revealed later that Sevilla were the main candidates to land the 25-year-old. However, Valencia have finally succeeded in signing the winger they already pursued until the last day of the last summer transfer market -when Rafa Benitez finally decided not to let Cheryshev leave.

Villarreal and Liverpool have also sought the Russian’s signing. Florentino Perez ruled out the possibility of sending him back to Villarreal, where Cheryshev spent last season, because he blames them for the Copa del Rey elimination.

Liverpool, on the other hand, wanted the player on a permanent deal, and Perez doesn’t want to sell him until the transfer ban situation is solved.

Cheryshev’s loan contract includes a clause that prevents him from playing against Real Madrid in the second-to-last game of La Liga.

It seems like Florentino Perez is determined to turn Neymar into the most expensive player in football history. According to the latest reports, the Los Blancos president believes that is the best way to end Barcelona’s supremacy in European football, which seems likely to continue this season.

Spanish press has reported that Los Merengues are ready to pay 190 million euros for Neymar next summer and pay him the highest salary in the world, in order to hurt Barcelona and bring a perfect replacement for Cristiano Ronaldo.

However, not all the fans are convinced that Neymar’s signing will be positive for the team, and their arguments should be taken into consideration.

First of all, paying 190 million for a football player is completely insane. That’s almost twice what Ronaldo and Gareth Bale cost. It is going to be hard for Perez to get a return on that investment despite his great business skills. In the past few years, La Liga have become very rigid regarding salary limits, and signing Neymar would probably mean that Real would be unable to bring any other players next summer, unless they succeed in selling Ronaldo for a considerably high amount, which seems a bit difficult at the moment.

Neymar’s transfer could also make some of the current players unhappy. It is known that Ronaldo doesn’t like to be reminded that Gareth Bale cost more than him. How will he feel if he stays at Real Madrid one more season and they bring a player who is younger than him, cost almost twice what he cost, and gets paid almost twice his salary? Of course, Perez would try to avoid that situation by selling CR7, but other players such as Bale or Sergio Ramos could also feel uncomfortable with this situation.

Leaving economics aside, many also claim that Neymar’s style doesn’t fit in Real Madrid. Yet, I believe it is totally the opposite. He could play a similar role as Ronaldo’s, playing in the left wing, creating space with his dribbles and speed, and obviously scoring goals. But unlike Ronaldo, who is always more willing to score than to assist, Neymar would help his team-mates improve his statistics and would probably contribute to create a better mood in the team, with Bale and Benzema feeling more important.

As for the fact that we would steal Barcelona their most talented young player, that would certainly be a big morale booster for all the organization: fans, players, staff and directors. There’s this feeling at Real Madrid that whatever they do, Barca keep beating them, and many times humiliating them. Perez has tried everything to turn this situation around, from signing the best managers in the world –Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti– to gathering all the world-class stars available. However, nothing has seemed to work. Neymar’s arrival is seen like the move that will change it all, especially if Leo Messi, who has been linked with Manchester City, leaves Barcelona.

I believe that would surely be the end of Barcelona’s era and the start of a new Madridista era. Of course the economic factors should be taken into account, but in my opinion, this specific effort would be very positive for Real Madrid. The pros clearly beat the cons from my point of view. So asked if Los Blancos should sign Neymar, my answers is obviously: YES.

Real Madrid right back Daniel Carvajal says the is more to come from the players after the beat Espanyol 6-0.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat trick against the Catalan outfit while James Rodriguez and Karim Benzema also got on the scoresheet in another emphatic win for Zinedine Zidane’s team. Real lie four points behind Barcelona in the league and a point behind second-placed Atletico de Madrid.

Speaking to reporters after the final whistle, the right back said the players will keep on fighting for every point. He also said while progress has been made under Zidane, it will take another couple of weeks to reach their best.

“Until its mathematically impossible to win the league, we’ll keep fighting. We try to measure ourselves with the immense figure of mister Zidane. Within two weeks we will achieve our optimum level.”

Quizzed about Real’s slow start to the campaign and why they never really hit top gear, Carvajal said the pre-season trips to Australia and China were perhaps not the ideal preparation.

“Maybe it wasn’t the most ideal preseason we could’ve had with all the traveling and few training sessions.”

The Spain international also touched on his rivalry with Danilo for the right back spot and praised the Brazilian for the form he has shown in recent games.

“Against Betis, Danilo played well. Everyone has to contribute and help each other. We go out to give our maximum on the pitch,” he stated.

Raphael Varane says the Real Madrid players have picked up Zinedine Zidane’s ideas quickly and are enjoying playing for their new boss.

The Frenchman took over from Rafa Benitez at the start of last month after the former Liverpool, Inter Milan and Napoli manager was fired after just seven months.

In his four games in charge, Los Blancos have won three and drawn one, scoring 17 goals along the way. On Sunday, they thrashed Espanyol 6-0 to close the gap on leaders Barcelona to four points again.

Speaking to the media after the final whistle, Varane said the players had quickly adapted to Zidane’s ideas and methods.

“We’re grasping the manager’s ideas faster & better. We carry that philosophy on to the pitch and its shows with our display. Hopefully we can continue playing like this. We play more offensive now and recover the ball higher up the pitch. These three week we’ve done strong physical work to build resistance & intensity. We feel better and it shows how fresh we are,” he commented.

Asked about whether Real still have a realistic chance of overhauling Barcelona in the league, the France international said the players will give their all between now and the end of the season.

“We’re professionals and always try to do our best. We’ll fight until the end adn see if we can win any titles,” he responded.
