Carlo Ancelotti has said his Real Madrid side paid for their defensive mistakes against Atletico de Madrid but his players can hold their heads high for their fighting spirit shown.

Los Blancos were knocked out of the Copa del Rey after losing 4-2 on aggregate against their local rivals. They went into the game at the Santiago Bernabeu with a mountain to climb having lost 2-0 last week in the first leg. And that mountain became Everest in size after Fernando Torres netted after just one minute to give the visitors the lead on the night.

Sergio Ramos equalised for the hosts, before Torres added a second early in the second half. Cristiano Ronaldo once again netted for Madrid to level, but generally Diego Simeone’s men looked comfortable on the night.

At his press conference afterwards, Ancelotti said his side made basic errors early in both halves.

“The mistakes we made, bringing the ball out from the back, we paid very dearly for.  [But] I am delighted with the way team played in the first half, it is impossible to play better. It was very difficult going behind so early, but we fronted up and played very, very well,” he said.

“It is the first time we have made these type of mistakes, and I do not think they will happen again. The team usually plays out from the back with a lot of quality. We cannot forget the other part of the game, for one hour we played, in my opinion, spectacularly,” he added.

He also went on to say that he doesn’t think his team has a mental block against Atletico – they just haven’t found a way to beat them yet. The two teams have met five times since last year’s Champions League final, with Los Rojiblancos winning three and drawing two.

“The way to beat them we found last year, but not yet this year,” he said. “We still have one game to play. But this is not so important. In La Liga we have an advantage over Atletico. We know Atletico are a very strong team, and we will set out to play in a better way the next time we meet.”

Fernando Torres scored one goal at the first minute of each half to bury Real Madrid hopes of turning the Copa del Rey tie around. Atletico Madrid earned a precious draw at the Santiago Bernabeu and moved into the quarter finals thanks to their victory in the home leg.

Los Blancos made two terrible mistakes at the beginning of each half which made it impossible for them to fulfil the comeback. Goals from Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo were not sufficient.

In the first play of the match, Pepe failed to clear the ball allowing Antoine Griezmann to control it and assist Torres, who finished beautifully into the top corner. At that moment, Los Blancos needed to score four goals to qualify for the next round.

The Santiago Bernabeu fans got discouraged with the goal, but their players reacted courageously, exerting a high pressure on their rival. Los Merengues threatened Jan Oblak constantly from that moment until the end of the first half.

The Slovenian goalkeeper denied Gareth Bale in the first serious chance for the home side, but he failed horribly in the next one. Toni Kroos sent a free kick into the box, Oblak fell as he rushed off his line and Ramos headed into an empty net.

There was no more attacking from Diego Simeone men in the first half, as they were all locked in their own third trying to stop Los Merengues.

Cristiano Ronaldo could have made it 2-1 as Oblak failed again, but Mario Suarez blocked his shot. Minutes later, another great header from the Portuguese deflected off Juanfran Torres and left wide off the post. All Real Madrid efforts were unfruitful.

Los Blancos repeated a poor start in the second half, as Ramos presented the ball to Griezmann. The Frenchman found Torres, who turned Pepe inside the box and beat Keylor Navas with a precise strike.

Ronaldo levelled a few minutes later heading a cross from Bale, but Carlo Ancelotti men were already depressed. They needed to score five goals, but they were exhausted and never believed it was possible.

The reigning champions were knocked out in the last-16 round and they keep struggling in 2015, having won one match of the four they have played.

Ex-Colombia and Newcastle United striker Tino Asprilla has told reporters compatriot Falcao was brainwashed by Real Madrid and believed he would sign for the club last summer.

The 28-year-old striker is on a season-long loan with Manchester United but doubts over his long-term future at the Red Devils were raised at the weekend when he failed to make the squad for the match against Southampton – young striker James Wilson was preferred on the bench.

Falcao’s agent Jorge Mendes has suggested this week that his client will play for another big club – and he could even move this transfer window should Louis Van Gaal deem him surplus to requirements at Old Trafford already.

In quotes published by IB Times, retired forward Asprilla said Falcao thought he was on his way to the Santiago Bernabeu right up to the last moment.

“I don’t speak to Falcao about transfers but I think he was waiting until the very last minute for Real Madrid because Florentino Perez made him that promise. He felt betrayed by them because for two years they tried to brainwash him. Then, at the last minute, the chance came to join United and everybody wants to play for a club like that,” he said.

Carlo Ancelotti says Los Blancos will be playing the toughest team in Europe this evening as they seek to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Atletico de Madrid in the Copa del Rey.

Diego Simeone’s side have proved to be a hard team to break down in recent years, and much of their success has been built on having a solid defensive unit.

Real, who won the Copa del Rey last season, will have all of their big guns available up front with Cristiano Ronaldo’s confidence boosted having won the Ballon d’Or on Monday night.

But speaking to the press ahead of the game, Ancelotti said this is his side’s biggest test of the season to date.

“Atletico are the toughest opposition out there and it’s not just me that thinks that. Everyone in Europe feels the same. We know how we need to play against them. We must show intensity while keeping cool heads and have 90 minutes to get a result, so we’ve no need to rush things,” he said.

“Facing us is the best-organised team in Europe and we need to get our passing right. It has to be intense, although I don’t mean we must go in hard. It will be evenly matched as it always is.”

He also called on the Real Madrid fans to do their part and back their team 100% of the way.

“I think the fans can help us. Firstly, because it’s a derby, as it’s very important to them as well, but also because we have to come back from a difficult scoreline. It’ll be a fantastic atmosphere to play in and we are looking forward to putting in a good performance and making it through to the quarter-finals.”

Real Madrid will look to turn the Copa del Rey tie against Atletico around as they face their city rivals at the Santiago Bernabeu one week after losing 2-0 at the Vicente Calderon.

Los Blancos face a tough task against one of the most solid teams in La Liga. As a matter of fact, Real have lost their last three games against Los Colchoneros.

Carlo Ancelotti will only miss Alvaro Arbeloa with a muscle injury, apart from the long-term injured Luka Modric. Sergio Ramos will return to the squad after resting last weekend in La Liga. The Italian manager will also recover Daniel Carvajal, who missed the last game through suspension.

Thus, Carletto will display his usual starting eleven, with the exception of Keylor Navas, who has been chosen as the starting goalkeeper for the Copa del Rey.

Diego Simeone will also use the reserve goalkeeper for this match, and he’s also expected two rest a couple of the players who have played more minutes this season. Diego Godin and Gabi could be replaced by Joao Miranda and Mario Suarez.

Mario Mandzukic is the only doubt for Atletico having suffered from fever on Wednesday. Fernando Torres could take his spot in the starting eleven, just like he did in the home leg.

Possible line-ups:

Real Madrid: Navas; Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Marcelo; Bale, Isco, Kroos, James Rodriguez; Benzema, Ronaldo.

Atletico Madrid: Oblak; Juanfran, Gimenez, Miranda, Lucas; Raul Garcia, Tiago, Mario, Koke; Torres, Griezmann.

Alvaro Arbeloa wants to move back to Liverpool after seeing reducing playing time Real Madrid, according to reports in the UK.

The right-back has had to get used to playing second fiddle to Dani Carvajal at the Santiago Bernabeu, and is believed to be keen on a move away to get first team football as he enters the twilight of his career.

A number of Premier League clubs are interested in him including Chelsea, now managed by former Los Blancos boss Jose Mourinho, the Daily Express claims. London rivals Arsenal are also believed to be keen on the player’s signature as they desperately look for defensive cover having looked vulnerable at the back all season and with key players suffering numerous injuries.

But Arbeloa is thought to be more interested in a move back to Anfield where he spent a couple of seasons before joining Real Madrid. He made 98 appearances in all competitions for the Reds between 2007 and 2009 and netted on two occasions.

Since joining Real Madrid, the 56-times capped Spain international has played a key role in the teams success. He has won La Liga, the Copa Del Rey, Spanish Supercopa, Champions League, Club World Cup and European Super Cup among his trophy haul.

Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has said he has no regrets about 2014 and that it was probably his best year yet.

The 29-year-old picked up the Ballon d’Or on Monday night – the third one of his career – after another outstanding year for his club. He helped Los Blancos to four titles – the Champions League, Copa del Rey, European Super Cup and World Club Cup – and scored more than 50 goals along the way.

But at international level, 2014 wasn’t quite as glorious as Portugal slumped out of the World Cup at the group stage, with Ronaldo clearly unfit for the tournament. But speaking to fifa, com, he said he has no regrets about playing and that being injured was no excuse.

He stated: “I could’ve told the coach not to consider me. I could’ve headed off on holidays instead without the worry and it would’ve been easier for me. Nobody would have been able to talk about me out there.  However, I like to face up to things directly. First of all, I don’t want to use the fact I was injured as an excuse, but it’s true that I wasn’t 100 per cent, as many people knew, and some didn’t want to know.

“But, as I said, I’m not making excuses. That I’m here today is down to my sacrifices, dedication and the sweat of my brow,” he added.

Next Thursday’s derby between Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid will be special for Toni Kroos. Apart from facing a great chance to live his first comeback with Los Blancos, the Germany international will play against his current landlord: Fernando Torres.

Spanish website Vanitatis has revealed ‘El Niño’ let the German one of the four houses he owns in the Spanish capital. More specifically, one situated in the luxurious residential area La Finca, in the suburbs of the city by Pozuelo de Alarcon, where other Real Madrid players live, including Cristiano Ronaldo.

The house has all luxury items: a swimming pool, two Jacuzzis, a gym, a garage with room for ten cars, a cinema, a games room… That’s why Torres invoices 25.000 euros every month. Thus, taking into account that the German has been living in Madrid since July, he has already paid the Spaniard 300.000 this season for living in his house.

If Real Madrid upset Atletico by turning the Copa del Rey tie around, will Fernando Torres increase his tenant’s rent? We’ll have to pay attention.

Colombian striker Radamel Falcao could arrive at Real Madrid before the winter transfer market window closes, Spanish website Fichajes.net has claimed.

The former Atletico Madrid man moved from AS Monaco to Manchester United last summer on a loan deal, but he hasn’t adapted to Premier League football. Although he started as Louis Van Gaal’s first choice for the striker role, in the last game against Southampton he didn’t even make it in the squad.

Fichajes.net has stated the player’s agent Jorge Mendes approached Los Blancos directors during the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Zurich to discuss a possible loan transfer. Chicharito Hernandez could return to Manchester, while Falcao would end up at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 28-year-old has long been linked with Real Madrid. Last summer he was very close to signing for Los Merengues, but his high price was an obstacle, especially after Florentino Perez had spent almost 80 million euros in bringing James Rodriguez.

Despite having played for Los Blancos city-rivals Atletico, Falcao is a big fan of Real as his father confessed a couple of years ago, when he told a Colombian radio “his dream is to play for Real Madrid, as a kid he always wanted to play there.”

Falcao has made 12 appearances for United so far this season, scoring three goals.

Atletico de Madrid boss Diego Simeone admits city rivals Real Madrid are much bigger than his club but little by little Los Rojiblancos are catching up.

The Argentine lead his team to their first La Liga win since 1996 last season, and they were also runners up in the Champions League, losing 4-1 to Los Blancos after extra time. For much of that game they lead – until Sergio Ramos scored a 93rd minute equaliser.

The Vicente Calderon side have already beaten Los Blancos in the Spanish Supercopa this season, and in the league, and they hold a 2-0 lead going into the second leg of their Copa del Rey tie on Thursday.

Speaking in Zurich, where Simeone and Carlo Ancelotti were both candidates for the FIFA Manager of the Year award, the Atletico boss said his team were being rewarded for their hard work and were slowly catching up with their more illustrious neighbours.

In 2014 we got the reward after the hard work we put. My team has great players, who played exactly the way we practiced during the week, with the same strength and effort. I’m was voted as a Coach of the Year nominee thanks to them,” he stated.

And he added: “Real Madrid are much stronger but, little by little, with our hard work, we’ll try to catch them.”
