Real Madrid moved top of the table last weekend following Barcelona’s and Sevilla’s slip ups in their respective games combined with Los Blancos’ emphatic win over Granada. Los Blancos have completed an amazing run of 12 straight wins since September 13th, when they lost to city rivals Atletico.

Many things have changed since the derby, when Los Merengues picked up their second defeat in a row, giving Barcelona an early six-point advantage in La Liga. Real Madrid have arguably become the strongest team in Europe at the moment, and it isn’t difficult to guess why.

1. A world-record attack.
Los Blancos score an average four goals per game. The arrival of James Rodriguez has added an extra spice to the attack, and that has turned into every game becoming a goal feast. The Colombian and Karim Benzema play a key role in creating spaces for their team-mates thanks to their mobility and their intelligence. Cristiano Ronaldo benefits from their work and their assists. In fact, the Portuguese is in the best scoring form of his career, having netted more goals himself than 16 La Liga clubs.

2. Isco’s resurgence.
The young Andalusian got past a wobbly first season at the Santiago Bernabeu. In his second year, he has matured to become a more complete player than he was when he led Malaga to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2012. He has improved his defensive commitment and plays a key part in balancing the team, something that Gareth Bale and James lacked at the start of the season. He’s got total freedom to do has he pleases in attack, and he has found his best game sharing the play-making zone with James, where both are masters of the final pass.

3. The midfield pair.
Toni Kroos and Luka Modric have adapted perfectly to their new role in the team. Both of them grew up playing in a more offensive position, featuring very often as a number ten. The fact that Madrid play without a holding midfielder has forced them to take a more demanding part, and they are nailing it. The two together combine 107 interceptions in the league to date, and their hard work in helping the defence has been crucial. Plus, they’re as inspired as usual when it comes to organizing the offensive and launching the counter-attacks. Thanks to them, nobody misses Xabi Alonso at all.

4. Ancelotti’s character.
When things have gone wrong, Ancelotti’s serene nature has helped calm nerves and focus on working harder to improve. Under Jose Mourinho every defeat was the beginning of a conflict with the press, the players or the fans. Ancelotti has become Los Blancos’ peace-maker, always showing a positive attitude which he passes on to his players.

5. The game style.
For the past few years, Real Madrid has become famous for their perfect counter-attacking, but apart from that there were not other characteristics that could help identify their game. With Isco, Modric, Kroos and James playing in midfield, Los Blancos have built a new style that combines a possession-based mentality with defensive commitment, without losing their superb counter-attacking. Ancelotti seems to have found the perfect balance he was looking for, and his team has come to dominate every aspect of the game.

Karim Benzema

Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema has said the team is at its peak having beaten Liverpool 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabeu to seal qualification for the next round of the Champions League.

The Frenchman notched the only goal of the game as Carlo Ancelotti’s men secured their 12th consecutive win in all competitions – the longest winning streak enjoyed by the side under the Italian’s command.

Speaking to journalists after the match, the goalscorer said the players are happy with the way things are going right now and feel they are on top of their game.

“The team is at its peak and we will continue to enjoy ourselves like we did today. We created a lot of chances and we are all attacking and defending together. I really like the Champions League, it is a competition I score a lot of goals in. I’m not sure if I’m at my peak but I feel 100% and am full of confidence,” he said.

The 27-year-old also spoke about the manager and Cristiano Ronaldo, both of whom are in the running to pick up awards at the FIFA ceremony in January.

He stated: “We’re all at ease with Ancelotti. He gives us a lot of confidence. Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world so if he doesn’t score it doesn’t matter. We have a game on Saturday and I’m sure he’ll get on the scoresheet then.”

Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has said he is not thinking about his side setting records for the number of wins or goals scored along the way, but just about each victory at a time.

Los Blancos secured progress to the last-16 of the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Liverpool. Karim Benzema scored the only goal of the game to extend Real’s winning run in all competitions to 12 games.

At his press conference afterwards, the Italian boss told the gathered media that each win on its own was important rather than setting records.

“What makes me happy is how the team is playing, how they prepare for matches and how motivated they are. Records are less important. They are nice, but I prefer to think about how we can win three points on Saturday,” he stated.

The manager also said he was happy with the win as Real didn’t reach top gear and despite the close scoreline they dominated the game.

“It was a good match, we did not play at a high tempo because we did not need to. We scored in the first half and controlled the game without taking risks. We were comfortable on the pitch and tried to score more goals. We controlled the game and the victory is well deserved,” he commented.

Karim Benzema

Real Madrid qualified for the last-16 round of the Champions League with an unusual 1-0 victory against Liverpool, thanks to a goal by Karim Benzema.

Carlo Ancelotti men had enough chances to delight the Santiago Bernabeu fans with another goal fest, but goalkeeper Simon Mignolet had a perfect night, conceding only one goal from 27 shots.

Los Blancos struggled at the start. Isco was not inspired, and the attacking players in general were not creating much in the final third.

The first minutes were encouraging for Liverpool, as the Reds saw they could be able to contain their rival’s attack. Yet, Karim Benzema destroyed the visitor’s hopes in the 27th minute, following a nice play from Los Merengues.

Isco passed the ball to Marcelo on the left and the Brazilian sent a perfect low cross for Benzema. The Frenchman got away from the defenders at the back post and fired into the back of the net.

The goal was a relief for the Santiago Bernabeu fans, and it helped the hosts put the pressure aside and start threatening Mignolet. The keeper was very busy, but he didn’t make a single mistake.

The Belgium international made a brilliant stop to deny Cristiano Ronaldo when the fans were already celebrating the 2-0. Minutes later he saved a Marcelo shot following a great play from CR7.

The Portuguese was denied again by the Mignolet at the start of the second half. With their goalkeeper putting in such a brilliant performance, Liverpool gained confidence and they tested Iker Casillas a couple of times, but it was relatively simple for the Spaniard to keep a clean sheet.

On the other end, Mignolet kept working hard and also saw how Marcelo hit the bar in one of Los Merengues best chances to double their lead.

Carlo Ancelotti men wouldn’t score any more goals, but the unusual 1-0 was enough to seal their ticket for the next round of the competition.

Former Real Madrid and England manager Fabio Capello has said Carlo Ancelotti is a better boss of Los Blancos than Jose Mourinho ever was because he is not a divisive character.

Mourinho spent three years at the Santiago Bernabeu but left in acrimonious circumstances having fallen out with his own players, plenty of opposition players and managers and having made a few enemies in the Spanish FA too.

Although he managed to win the league and Copa del Rey, the reign of the self-styled Special One is widely considered a failure because he didn’t land the Champions League trophy.

Ancelotti replaced the Portuguese and immediately showed him how it’s done, winning the tournament – the long-awaited Decima in his first season in charge. To add to that, Los Blancos also won the Copa del Rey.

And speaking to Marca, Capello said his compatriot has done a much better job than his predecessor.

“I think he is a long-term coach, the perfect coach for Real Madrid. His style is working well with a great club that expects great football. Carlo is part of the team. Before, the coach was against everyone because Mourinho liked to be the catalyst for everything,” he told the newspaper.

Real Madrid Liverpool Preview

Real Madrid take on Liverpool tonight in the fourth match of the group stage in the Champions League knowing that a win over the Reds will ensure their place in the last-16 of the competition with two games to spare.

Carlo Ancelotti’s team won 3-0 at Anfield two weeks ago in a devastating display of attacking football, and his players are after their 12th consecutive win in all competitions this evening. Their remarkable run has seen them overhaul Barcelona at the summit of La Liga.

In Cristiano Ronaldo, Los Blancos have a man at the very top of his game right now. The 29-year-old seems to reach new levels every match he plays. He has scored in his last 12 appearances, and is just one goal short of Raul’s record as the top scorer in the history of the Champions League.

In team news, Gareth Bale is fit again and could play after missing the past four matches, meaning a return of the fearsome BBC in the Real attack – Bale, Benzema and Cristiano.

For Liverpool, there was some speculation in the press that Steven Gerrard could be rested in a somewhat sensational move by Brendan Rodgers. How likely that is to happen remains to be seen. Daniel Sturridge has traveled to Madrid but is unlikely to start having not featured for the first team in two months.

Probable line-ups:
Real Madrid: Casillas; Carvajal, Ramos, Pepe, Marcelo; Modric, Kroos, Rodriguez; Bale, Benzema, Ronaldo
Liverpool: Mignolet; Johnson, Skrtel, Lovren, Moreno; Sterling, Henderson, Gerrard, Can, Moutinho; Balotelli

Real Madrid midfielder Isco has said he believes team mate Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to win the Ballon d’Or again this year.

The 29-year-old picked up football’s most prestigious individual honour 12 months ago and is in the running to win it for the third time in his career when the winner is announced in January.

The Los Blancos front man has started this season in sensational fashion, raising the already sky high bar even higher, smashing in 17 league goals already. He netted over 50 goals for his club last season – for the fourth consecutive year – and helped the team win the Copa del Rey and Champions League.

Speaking to AS, Isco said there would be no more deserving winner than the Portugal star for what he has done for his club.

“Personally, I think Cristiano is favourite for all that he’s shown. The goals he’s scored, the trophies he’s won,” he said.

The 22-year-old went on to discuss his own performances in the team and how much he is playing at the Santiago Bernabeu. He told the paper his aim is to stay at Los Blancos and keep winning trophies for many years to come.

“My career has only just started and I’ve got a lot of goals yet. I think the best place to keep winning trophies is Real Madrid. I’m very positive. I’m in the best team in the world, we are winning trophies, we won La Decima and hopefully we can keep it up.”

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has insisted Cristiano Ronaldo is not thinking about breaking the Champions League record for the most amount of goals scored in the competition when Los Blancos take on Liverpool.

The Portugal striker has netted 70 times in the competition in his career and lies just one behind legendary striker and former Real Madrid frontman Raul, who last week signed for the New York Cosmos.

Real take on Liverpool at the Santiago Bernabeu knowing that a win will put them in the second round of the competition they won last season. And Ancelotti told reporters Ronaldo is focused on helping his team win three more points and not on breaking the record against the bitter rivals of his former club Manchester United.

“Cristiano is working hard for himself and the side, just like other players. I don’t think he’s thinking about the record, he has time – it’s not his last game. He is focused on playing for the team,” he said.

While on the topic of goalscorers, the Italian defended his countryman Mario Balotelli and said the striker shouldn’t take all the blame for Liverpool’s woes this season.

“He has quality and is at a side where they’re not playing well having lost Suarez, who scored a lot.”They need another solution but I don’t think all of Liveprool’s problems are Balotelli. He needs to do his work for the side, that’s all that can be asked of him.”

Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale is back in training ahead of the visit of Liverpool in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.

The 25-year-old has missed almost three weeks of action with a hip-injury. He was an unused substitute against Levante on October 18, but has missed the last four matches for Los Blancos. They included the 3-0 over Liverpool at Anfield and the 3-1 win over title rivals Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu last weekend.

But a statement on the official club website said the Welshman was back in the fold after recovering from injury and had taken part in a number of drills.

“Bale joined the group for the week’s last training session, during which Cristiano Ronaldo and Marcelo worked alone and performed running drills out on the pitch,” it read.

And it added: “Bale completed a series of demanding dribbling, passing and shooting circuits.”

The 91-mill-euro summer signing from Tottenham Hotspur could have a tough time getting back in the side. Los Blancos have been in fine form in recent games and are on a run of 11 consecutive win so far. Isco and James Rodriguez, two players competing for a place with Bale, have been particularly impressive for Carlo Ancelotti’s side.

Luke Modric says Real Madrid are hungry to score more goals and keep the winning run going.

Los Blancos defeated Granada 4-0 on Saturday afternoon with goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema and a James Rodriguez double. The 10-time Champions League winners have now scored 37 goals in their opening 10 league games.

But Modric says scoring goals makes the players determined to score even more as they enjoy it so much.

Speaking to journalists after the game in Granada, he said: “We need to continue this run and we’re very happy with the way we’re playing. We’re in incredible form. We want to be comfortable in games and we played well from the kick-off. The team wants more, and the more goals we score the more we want. It’s always difficult to win in Granada but we deserved the victory.”

The midfielder was also asked about his increasing impressive partnership in the middle with Toni Kroos and how the German compares to Xabi Alonso.

And Modric responded: “Xabi Alonso was an excellent player for us, but Kroos and I are playing better and better every game. We’re steadily getting to know each other and we know what we want to do on the pitch. I think that we’re playing very well defensively.”
