Back in August and September, Real Madrid’s rising star Isco could do no wrong. He had just played a significant role in helping the Spain Under-21 side win the European Championship. Shortly after that, he secured a 32 million euro move from Malaga to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Hailed as the next big thing in Spain, Isco enhanced his reputation further in his first few weeks as a Los Blancos player. He was the hero on the opening weekend of the season when he created a goal and headed in the winner against Real Betis. He grabbed a brace against Athletic Bilbao, scored another against Getafe, and opened his account in the Champions League against Galatasaray.

While Madrid’s other big name arrival, Gareth Bale, struggled with injury, fitness and form issues, Isco was on the crest of a wave it appeared.

And then El Clasico arrived.

Isco found himself out of the side, Bale was named in the front three, and the pair’s fortunes have changed ever since. Since the loss at the Camp Now, Bale has formed a key role in the BBC (Bale, Benzema, Cristiano) front three – scoring three and providing five assists in the post-Clasico games for Los Blancos. Isco, on the other hand, has hardly had a look in – and some reports have emerged that he may even be on his was out of the club if Madrid get an acceptable offer.

So what has gone wrong for the 21-year-old?

The answer appears to be the change the team’s set up. Isco was pivotal when Ancelotti set out his 4-2-3-1 formation. Playing just behind the front man, he was able to find the space in front of opposition defences to create chances for others. He could link with the other attacking midfielders, and roam around, making the runs to bring others into the game.

Since the game at the Nou Camp however, Ancelotti has opted for a 4-3-3 formation. The form of Bale, Benzema and Cristiano makes it impossible to drop any of them, while the trio are more suited to those roles in the front three than Isco is. In midfield, the Italian manager has gone for Xabi Alonso and Sami Khedira as the duo to form a defensive base on which more attacking players can build from. With the World Cup winner having only returned from a long injury lay off, Asier Illarramendi is the obvious choice to come off the bench when Alonso’s legs tire.

The other midfield role has of late gone to Luka Modric. After a difficult first season in the Spanish capital, the former Tottenham Hotspur man seems to have found his feet and is playing some incredible football.

So Isco seems to be a victim of the formation change. He will have to be patient for his chances, and with Khedira likely to miss the rest of the season through injury having torn his cruciate ligament while playing for Germany, Isco may find himself back in the fold.

Another factor to take into consideration is the amount of football the youngster has played in the last 12 months. Malaga had an oustanding couple of years under Manuel Pellegrini. While the south coast club is cash strapped, they enjoyed a superb run to the quarter finals of the Champions League last season, with Isco playing a key role.

As previously mentioned, he then went off with Spain Under-21’s in the summer, meaning he didn’t get a proper rest. Ahead of the most recent La Liga game against Real Sociedad, Ancelotti alluded to the fact Isco needed a break and played down reports of any potential exit.

“”Isco’s problem is just competition, sometimes he plays, sometimes on the bench. He needed a rest, but he is fine now,” he said.

With the door open again for him, let’s see if the Isco party resumes when La Liga returns next week, or whether the lights have gone out already.

Sergio Ramos and Pilar Rubio announce pregnancy

Sergio Ramos has become the third Real Madrid player to announce in the last  few months he’s going to have a baby, after Iker Casillas and Xabi Alonso. The defender and his partner Pilar Rubio spread the good news through their Twitter accounts.

“We want to share with you the happiness we feel in this very important moment, we are going to be parents,” they published on their Twitter timeline together with a picture of the couple.

The 27-year-old footballer and his beautiful girlfriend have been together for one and a half years. She’s a famous TV presenter in Spain and she has been picked by different media as the country’s most sexy woman.

There have been rumours of a pregnancy for months, since the two of them seemed very happy together and Ramos even appeared in a TV show singing a song for her. However, all that gossip was false until now, when the baby is finally coming.

Curiously, Ramos ex girlfriend Amaia Salamanca has also announced her pregnancy at the same time. She and her partner Rosauro Varo are also going to be parents.

Now there are three soon-to-be fathers in the squad. Ramos’ impending fatherhood gives Real Madrid the lead in that matter over arch-rivals Barcelona, who have two fathers-to-be in the team: Andres Iniesta and Carles Puyol. All of them could celebrate their child birth with a World Cup victory if Spain triumphs in Brazil.

Real Madrid and Spain defender Sergio Ramos has said his country’s trip to South Africa this week is a way of saying thanks to the locals who hosted and supported them in the World Cup in 2010.

La Roja won the tournament at Soccer City in Johannesburg, with Andre Iniesta’s goal in extra time becoming part of Spanish folklore. Spaniards across the world remember where they were and what they were doing the day they won the World Cup.

An in an interview with Madrid-based daily AS, Ramos was asked about his memories of the tournament. The 27-year-old. who has won well over 100 caps for his country, said he cherished every moment of the month the team spent in the Rainbow Nation.

“Every memory of that time is fantastic, it feels like it was only yesterday, but years go by quickly. Now we have to defend the title. We got the rewards for all the work that every player who has played for Spain deserved. The memory that sticks out the most is Andrés’ goal, and when the final whistle blew. At that moment, I felt so proud to be Spanish and to be able to defend my country,” he stated.

He admitted he has a number of souvenirs from the last World Cup that he treasures, including shirts, photos and a small replica of the trophy itself. “We didn’t win my neighbourhood tournament, we won the World Cup, and that’s something to be proud of for the rest of your life,” Ramos said.

As Vicente del Bosque’s side prepare for the friendly against Bafana Bafana, Ramos said the 2010 World Cup host have a strong team and will prove to be a tough match.

“Every team that we meet wants to play as well as possible because beating the world champions is so significant. South Africa have quality and a strong team and we hope everyone will see a great spectacle,” he concluded.

Sami Khedira’s long-term injury could force Real Madrid to make an unexpected signing in the next few weeks. Two names have already come up as the German’s possible substitutes: Nemanja Matic and Blaisse Matuidi.

The Serbian was already linked to a Madrid move last summer. According to Portuguese newspaper Correio da Manha, Los Blancos could make a bid for Benfica’s midfielder in the winter transfer market. The deal would include either Fabio Coentrao or Ezequiel Garay’s rights, since Real still part-own the Las Aguilas defender.

The Portuguese paper points out Garay’s buy-out clause is 50 million euros and there are a number of European clubs interested in signing him, such as Manchester United, Chelsea and Napoli. That could turn into an obstacle to bring Matic’s negotiations to a good end.

Meanwhile, Spanish website Fichajes.net claims Carlo Ancelotti has already asked Florentino Perez to sign Paris Saint Germain’s midfielder Blaise Matuidi.

According to reports, the Frenchman is not happy with his role at PSG and would have no doubts in moving to Madrid if an offer arrived. He also keeps a good relationship with Ancelotti, after they coincided last season at the French club.

However, Matuidi’s signing would be very expensive, since his club would ask for no less than 30 million euros. Moreover, the French international wouldn’t be able to play the Champions League, since he has already participated this season -Matic would also have that problem.

Thus, Matuidi’s option seems to be the most complicated. In case they were to sign any player, Los Blancos directors would seek for a cheap provisional transfer, as they count on Khedira for next season.

Reports in the UK press have suggested Manchester City are keen to launch a bid to sign Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos.

The 27-year-old, now into his ninth season at the Santiago Bernabeu, is able to operate in the centre and at right back, which would allow Manuel Pellegrini a host of options as he tries to sort out his vulnerable defence at the Etihad Stadium.

According to reports some Sunday papers in the UK, Ramos is keen to secure a new deal at the Madrid club, but wants a pay rise that would see him placed among the highest earners at Los Blancos. He currently earns a salary of around 5 million euros a year but is keen to be placed in a higher bracket of around 7 million a year.

But Real’s directors are not keen to fork out so much money, leaving the door open for the Citizens to test Carlo Ancelotti’s resolve. Big spending French club PSG are also said to be monitoring the situation with interest.

The ex-Sevilla man, who recently announced he and his long-term girlfriend are expecting their first child together, has a release clause of 46 million euros, and Manchester City are believed to be preparing an offer of around 40 million euros as a starting point.

Ramos has played 366 times for the club since his arrival in the Spanish capital. He has played for his country 114 times, and was part of the successful teams to win the World Cup in South Africa in 2010, as well as Euro 2008 and Euro 2012.

Legend. Icon. Hero. There are few words left to describe Usain Bolt, the famed Jamaican sprinter whose superhuman feats on the track and boundless charisma both on and off it have surpassed the world of athletics and even sport itself to turn him into one of the most recognisable figures on the planet, a true global icon of the 21st century.

But there is one more descriptor to add that some people might not know about… ‘merengue’. And really, it’s no surprise… after all, what other club could such a legend support, if not the only team to have won nine Champions League trophies?

Bolt’s special relationship with the club began four years ago, specifically on the 29th of August 2009, when he kicked off the inaugural match of the 2009-10 season in the Bernabeu, which saw Los Blancos face Deportivo de La Coruña.

Before the game, he and Real Madrid president, Florentino Perez, exchanged jerseys, with Bolt personally signing his Jamaica jersey: “For my team Real Madrid”. The ‘merengue’ jersey Usain received was inscribed with his name and the number 9’58, in reference to his epic 100m record time.

Although the honorary kickoff at the Bernabeu was a somewhat nerve-wracking experience for him, Usain enjoyed the experience so much that he went back for a private tour of the stadium the very next day. He even faced Butragueño for a penalty shootout!

The match also happened to be the debut of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo in La Liga, having arrived in Madrid from Manchester United that summer. Ronaldo sealed his debut with a scored penalty, which was witnessed by Usain from the president’s box. That night, the superstars enjoyed dinner together with their respective agents and closest associates.

As a result of that experience, the two have been friends ever since.

When Bolt was chosen as “Champion of Champions” by L’Equipe in 2009 (an award he also received in 2008 and 2012 for his spectacular Olympic achievements those years), he said that he would have given the award to Cristiano Ronaldo: “He has been able to stay on top, and as I myself know very well, that is the hardest thing to do.” Just last year, in the run up to the Ballon D’Or ceremony, Usain publicly expressed his support for Cristiano, stating: “Without a doubt, Cristiano is better than Messi. He’s a more complete player.”

Two years ago, the Flying Jamaican was in Zagreb, Croatia for his first track meet after winning gold medals in the 200m and 4x100m at the Daegu 2011 World Championships, but disappointingly being disqualified for a false start in the 100m. A Real Madrid contingent, was also in the Croatian capital for their Champion’s League opening match against Dynamo Zagreb, and Bolt invited the squad to witness his 100m “redemption race” after the Daegu fiasco. He won in a season best of 9.85 seconds. The next day, Real Madrid won their match 0-1 with a goal from Angel Di Maria, after a fantastic combination between Benzema and Marcelo, in which the latter provided the final assist to the Argentine.

Unfortunately, then boss Mourinho did not give the players permission to attend, but Florentino Perez and Emilio Butragueño were in attendance and gave Bolt another Real Madrid jersey to add to his collection, this time one belonging to his friend CR7 which had been signed by the whole team.

More recently, Bolt has continued to follow Los Blancos and shortly after Gareth Bale’s arrival in Madrid, even offered to give him some personalised coaching to improve his already impressive sprinting technique: “I have great respect for Real Madrid and if they and Gareth want my help, I would be happy to fly in to give Gareth a private training session.”

After all, as Usain only half-jokingly reminds us: “I helped Ronaldo with his sprint in a training session and look at everything he’s achieved since then!”

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has downplayed fears Xabi Alonso will be out for a while after picking up an injury against Equatorial Guinea.

Just 24 hours after Sami Khedira was seriously injured in a friendly against Italy, Real Madrid fans would have been fearing the worst when Alonso was replaced just before half time having picked up an ankle injury.

But speaking to journalists after the narrow 2-1 for the World Cup holders, del Bosque said Alonso’s removal was just a precaution, and the 31-year-old will not be out of action for a while.

“It’s nothing serious, just a knock… Xabi was brought off just as a precaution,” he said.

Los Blancos will be without Khedira for the rest of the season after he tore his anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament on Friday evening. Him and Alonso have formed a superb partnership in midfield this season for Carlo Ancelotti’s side, so missing the Spaniard for any lengthy spell would have been a massive blow.

Alonso has only recently returned to the side following five months out through injury. He missed the Confederations Cup in Brazil in the summer with a groin problem. He was due to be fit for the start of the campaign but just before the opening match against Real Betis, he broke a toe in training and was out for the next two months.

Carlo Ancelottihas jokingly stated that If Cristiano Ronaldo does not win the Ballon d’Or, he will lead a sit-in protest.

For the last four years, his rival Lionel Messi has had the honour of receiving the award. The 28-year-old Portuguese international is considered among the favourites for the award after his goal scoring exploits that have seen him net 62 goals so far this calendar year.

This year, Ancelotti presumes it is now Ronaldo’s turn to receive the award. If FIFA does not grant the award to the Real player, he will protest in his hometown.

“If they don’t give it to Cristiano I’ll stage a sit-in in Reggiolo [the city of his birth in Italy]. No one deserves the prize more than him. He’s a model professional,” he told Italian broadcaster Radio 24.

He added, “If he [Ronaldo] didn’t look after every detail, his physique too, he wouldn’t be able to achieve the things he does.”

Regarding La Liga, Barca is first with Real Madrid in third position, trailing by six points. Ancelotti says there is not much of a difference between both teams. “The six-point gap will be hard to overturn, but we feel we’re at their level,” Ancelotti said.

Ancelotti spoke about his former team AC Milan, the club with whom he won two Champions League trophies regarding encountering complications this season. He presumes the team’s vice-president Adriano Galliani will not leave his position in his club.

“In terms of experience, he’s second to none. He’s the most important figure at Milan. If he left it would be a significant departure, but it won’t happen.”

Real Madrid press report 17-11-13

Madrid sports daily Marca highlights today in their front page the fact that international friendlies have left Real Madrid’s midfield in trouble.

“A break and a scare,” they title, in a reference to Sami Khedira’s injury and Xabi Alonso contusion. The German tore his ligament in Germany’s friendly against Italy and will miss the rest of the season, while the Spaniard had to be replaced in the game at Equatorial Guinea due to a blow in his ankle.

The other main Madrid sports newspaper, As, reports that Khedira “had surgery yesterday and faces a six-month recovery period.”

Both papers emphasize Spain’s 1-2 victory over a very aggressive Equatorial Guinea. Xabi Alonso played 42 minutes before being substituted by Sergio Busquets and Sergio Ramos came in at the end of the match. Iker Casillas and Alvaro Arbeloa sit on the bench the whole game.

In other news, Marca reports Carlo Ancelotti’s biography will be published tomorrow and highlights one sentence from the book: “Florentino Perez knew how to convince me,” the Italian reveals.
