Real Madrid forward Karim Benzema is to begin contact talks with the club, according to reports.

Spanish sports paper AS said the Frenchman, who is under contact for another two years, will begin talks next month.

Benzema, who has spent four years at the Santiago Bernabeu since signing from Lyon, has been linked with moves away from the club in the summer, with Arsenal, AC Milan and Juventus all rumoured to be interested.

But the sale of Gonzalo Higuain to Napoli has catapulted the 25-year-old to the main striker role at the club.

Los Blancos president is known to be a big fan of Benzema and wants him to commit his long-term future to the club.

Benzema scored for Real in the 2-1 win over Real Betis on Sunday in the club’s opening La Liga fixture of the new campaign.

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric would only move back to the Premier League if it were to sign for Manchester United, it has been reported.

The Daily Mirror claimed Los Blancos offered the former Tottenham Hotspur player to his former club as part of the deal to take Gareth Bale to the Santiago Bernabeu, but Modric refused.

According to the paper, the Croatia international is awaiting an offer from David Moyes, Manchester United’s new boss, to become the Red Devils’ star signing of the summer.

Modric is believed to be keen on a move to Old Trafford following a season of mixed fortunes in the Spanish capital. At the halfway point of last season, he was voted La Liga’s worst signing following his 38 million euro move last August. Since the turn of the year though his form has picked up and he even scored a stunning goal to knock Manchester United out of the Champions League.

Any transfer to United could be complicated though as Carlo Ancelotti is a fan of Modric having watched him many times when he was manager of Chelsea. He sees the playmaker as an important part of his squad as he aims to wrestle the title back of Barcelona and challenge for the Champions League.

Reports have surfaced that Arsenal are set to offer Real Madrid around 25 million euros for Iker Casillas.

The North London side are in desperate need of reinforcements in the backline, particularly after the damaging 3-1 home defeat by Aston Villa on the opening day of the season.

The Gunners have been hit with an injury crisis which, combined with a total lack of signings in the transfer market this summer, has left the squad thread bare. Goalkeeper Vito Mannone was one of the players to leave, while Wojcech Szczesny and Lukas Fabiansk have failed to impress in recent matches.

According to Sportdirectnews, Arsene Wenger could be about to appease angry fans by signing Casillas, who is willing to leave Los Blancos following his snub at the weekend when Diego Lopez was preferred in goal in the opening La Liga match of the season.

Real Madrid legend Raul Gonzalez believes the price Tottenham Hotspur are asking for winger Gareth Bale is too high to make a potential transfer worthwhile.

The forward, who returns to the Santiago Bernabeu on Thursday with his current side Al-Sadd for the Trofeo Bernabeu, said the 100 million euro asking price was prohibitive, adding that Los Blancos already have a good squad.

Speaking to Al-Sadd’s website, Raul said: “Bale is a wonderful player. I understand the Real Madrid board is working hard to assemble the best team possible. But the price is too high.”

Raul, who scored 323 goals in his career with Los Merengues, stated his belief that the team will go on to be successful under Carlo Ancelotti this season.

“Jose Mourinho did a very good job with the team, but Carlo Ancelotti is one of the best coaches in the world,” the 36-year-old was quoted as saying.

Rumours tell that a Real Madrid fan once sent a video to the club with highlights of Edwin Congo’s performances in the Colombian League. The club directors did some research, saw that he had scored 30 goals and decided to pay 5.5 million euros to bring Congo from Once Caldas in 1999.

That is probably an exaggeration, but having a look at Congo’s record after signing for Los Merengues, most Real fans would support that story.

The 23-year-old arrived to join a squad where Raul Gonzalez, Nicolas Anelka, Fernando Morientes and Ronaldo filled the forward line and didn’t play a single official match for Los Blancos. Thus, he left on loan to Valladolid, Vitoria de Guimaraes and Toulouse until Real decided to keep him in the squad for the 2001/02 season.

Congo won a Champions League that year without having played a single minute in the season. And he would never play for Real Madrid. That summer he signed for Levante, where he spent four seasons becoming a fans idol. He helped to bring the Valencian team to the first division, where they played one season, with Congo playing 22 games and scoring two goals.

In the summer of 2006 he moved to second division side Sporting Gijon, where he had the best performance of his career with 11 goals in 34 appearances. That convinced first division club Recreativo Huelva to sign him, but he would only play six matches before leaving.

After that, a 31-year-old Congo was unable to get a professional contract and started playing for amateur teams in the Valencia area, such as Olimpic Xativa, la Benissa and Paiporta. He had to combine football with a job as odontologist, which is his profession.

Edwin Congo, the business-man

Congo played 17 games for Colombia national team, scoring three goals, but everybody remembers him as one of the biggest failures in the history of football. At the end of his career, he and his brother Fabio decided to open a Caribbean restaurant in Valencia called Blue Marlin. Their mother was the cook and Fabio the manager.

In 2012 they had to close after the property owner made a complaint for non-payment of the rent. Congo still owes the landlord 12.000 euros. “I always felt bad when asking them for the Money, because I know the crisis affects us all, but they lied to me, they never paid”, she told El Mundo.

Congo left for Colombia without having paid his debt. He returned to his hometown Manizales, where he tried to find a team, start new businesses and even investing in his first club, Once Caldas.

Imagine you are a dentist and an amateur football player who signs for Real Madrid after Florentino Perez watches a few of your goals in Youtube. Imagine you arrive to Santiago Bernabeu and, despite never playing an official match, you are proclaimed winner of the Champions League. A dream come true? Well, don’t stop dreaming, because Edwin Congo story tells that can actually happen.

Despite the opening day win on Sunday, there are plenty of areas to improve – that’s the overall analysis of the Real Madrid press about the current state of affairs at Los Blancos.

Marca goes for a picture of Carlo Ancelotti out on the touchline on its front page today, contemplating the amount of work that needs to go into the team still until it becomes a well oiled machine. The Italian himself admitted the defending could have been better against Real Betis, while he will also want to see an improvement in how clinical his team is.

Los Blancos have come from behind more than any other team in La Liga in 2013, and Ancelotti will want to ensure his side ensure they don’t fall behind too often by taking their chances when they come.

In other news, a poll carried out by sensationalist paper AS claims 59% of Real Madrid fans would like to see Iker Casillas in goal rather than Diego Lopez. The World Cup winner should take his place in the starting line up against Al Sadd in the Trofeo Bernabeu on Thursday.

Finally, Real Madrid legend Raul, who will appear for both sides in that game, has been having his say on the Gareth Bale affair, claiming the player would be a wonderful addition to Los Blancos, but the price is a bit too high.

Real Madrid and Barcelona’s dominance in La Liga makes the championship boring overall, according to Atletico de Madrid manager Diego Simeone.

The Argentine boss guided his side to third place in La Liga last season, and saw his side lift the Copa del Rey after beating Real Madrid at the Santiago Bernabeu in May.

But asked about whether the Rojiblancos could push on and challenge the top two for a tilt at the title this season, Simeone was emphatic in his response.

“No, I absolutely do not,” he said, before adding “Madrid and Barcelona play a different league. This is a boring championship.”

The Atletico boss added the situation would not change until there is a more even distribution of television rights and the payments received from that.

Carlo Ancelotti’s decision to omit Iker Casillas from Real Madrid’s starting line-up against Real Betis was surprising, according to Victor Valdes.

The Barcelona keeper, who has played second fiddle to Casillas at international level for much of his career, said the Real Madrid captain was in good form for Spain during the Confederations Cup this summer in Brazil.

Casillas was controversially dropped by former manager Jose Mourinho midway through last season in favour of Diego Lopez, but was widely expected to take his place in the team again this season.

Speaking after the weekend action, Valdes said: “I was surprised that he didn’t start yesterday. In training with Spain he looked good to me and in the Confederations also.”

Valdes went on to say that no matter what happens in the Madrid dressing room, he considers Casillas to be the best goalkeeper in the world.

“I don’t tire of saying that he has made saves that I didn’t think were possible. For me he is the best,” he stated.

Carlo Ancelotti to Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has said his side must improve their defending after watching Los Blancos secure a late win over Real Betis in their first match of the new La Liga campaign.

Los Blancos conceded an early goal before Karim Benzema and Isco secured the three points.

But Ancelotti was unimpressed with the team’s defending and warned goalkeeper Diego Lopez and the back four that they risk losing their place in the side.

The former PSG manager said: “We have to improve. We created chances to score but we had problems in defence.  Today I decided to choose Diego Lopez. I don’t know who is going to play in the next game.”

Ancelotti was full of praise for Isco though, who set up the first goal as well as scoring the winner on his debut.

“Isco gave it all in this game. He scored a fantastic goal,” stated the 54-year-old.

Most of today’s press focus in on Real Madrid’s late win over Real Betis at the Santiago Bernabeu in the opening match of the La Liga campaign.

The visitors took the lead early on, before Karim Benzema leveled on the half hour mark. Isco then ran the show and got the winner four minutes from time to secure the three points for Carlo Ancelotti’s men.

Both Marca and AS are full of praise for Isco, a 30 million euros summer signing from Malaga. The 21-year-old made Benzema’s goal and grabbed one himself – the stuff dream debuts are made of.

There is also plenty of coverage on the goalkeeping situation. Iker Casillas, left out much much of the campaign last year by Jose Mourinho, was widely expected to take his place in the starting 11 under Ancelotti. However, the Italian sprung a surprise and left him on the bench in favour of Diego Lopez. According to the manager, that could change in the next match.
