Real Madrid and Emirates Airline are expected to hold a press conference at the Bernabeu later today to confirm the UAE-based carrier as the new shirt sponsor.

The airline, which has its base in Dubai, will have its logo on Real Madrid’s kit from next season.

Other high profile clubs to be sponsored by Emirates include French champions PSG, Premier League side Arsenal, and seven-times European Cup winners AC Milan.

Although figures have not been released officially, it is thought the deal between Real Madrid and Emirates is around 25 million euros a year – making it the biggest shirt sponsorship deal in Los Blancos’ history.

Liverpool forward Luis Suarez has put Real Madrid on alert after failing to give his club assurances over his future at Anfield.

According to Goal.com, Suarez is keen to play Champions League football and Liverpool would be willing to listen to offers of around 45 million euros from overseas clubs for their star man.

The website said the Merseyside club has met with Suarez’s agent on two occasions since he was banned for 10 matches for biting Chelsea defender Branislav Ivanovic, and fear he may have set his sights on a move away.

With Gonzalo Higuain seemingly set for the exit door at the Bernabeu, the 26-year-old forward is seen by many as the perfect man to fill his boots.

Suarez, who has a contract with Liverpool until 2016, scored 30 goals in all competitions last season.

Corinthian FC squad that toured around North America in 1906

There are very few romantics left in nowadays football. As years go by, there is a certain feeling that the ball matters less in the game. It seems the focus is for many clubs to have more fans in China and selling the highest amount of shirts.

That is why it seems convenient to take a look back and remember the story of Corinthian, a team who created the passion for the beautiful game to a point that Real Madrid wears their famous white kit as a tribute to that legendary team.

Corinthian FC was founded in London in 1882, and from their initial creation they made clear that they would just compete for their love for football. In fact, the founders wrote in their statute that they would “remain as an amateur team who would not compete for any trophy or reward.”

That would mean they could not be accredited by the Football Association, the official football organisation in Britain, and thus they would not be able to take part in any official tournaments.

However, in spite of the fact they only played friendly games, Corinthian soon acquired a great reputation in England. This was due to their pleasing style of play and the fame they earned as giant-killers. In fact, to this day they are the team that has inflicted Manchester United’s biggest defeat in their history: 11-3.

The Red Devils where not the only team embarrassed by Corinthian. In 1884, they beat Blackburn Rovers, then holders of the FA Cup, by a convincing 8-1. They also hammered Bury 6-0 in 1903, just after their rivals had also enjoyed FA Cup success.

Those results made the Londoners become the fashionable team in England. In fact, in 1894 and 1895, in two matches against Wales, all the players that formed the English national team were members of Corinthian.

That made the club famous beyond British borders. And that is why nobody was surprised when they were invited on a tour around Brazil at the beginning of the 20th century.

In South America they left locals with the impression they were an unbeatable squad, beat Fluminense 10-1, Rio 8-1, Sao Paulo 8-2 and Paulistao 5-0 along the way. In fact, they left such a good image behind that Brazilian club Corinthians is named after them.

They also marveled Europe. A proof of that is that Real Madrid decided to wear a white shirt, the same colour Corinthian used, as a tribute to the English club, which they considered an example for their values and their game.

Just one official match

The Londoners only broke their rule of not playing official matches once in their history. It was in 1900, when they played the Sheriff of London Charity Shield, a tournament that once a year took place between a professional team and an amateur team.

The reason they broke this rule was that the tournament’s purpose was to collect funds that would be distributed among the hospitals in the city. Corinthian did not disappoint anyone in the match and took the trophy home after defeating Aston Villa, who were favourites after having won the league, 2-1.

However, nothing lasts forever, and romanticisms don’t usually survive for long in football. In 1939, Corinthian merged with Casuals to create Corinthian-Casuals FC.

That wasn’t their best decision, as the team rapidly lost their fame and their magic. Nowadays, the club roams in the lower divisions of British football and very few remember that at the beginning of the century they were a widely admired team and that Real Madrid honours them every weekend wearing the same white coloured shirt that Corinthian wore in their unforgettable games.

The agent of Spurs start Gareth Bale has said his client would be ‘honoured’ if Real Madrid wanted to speak to him about a possible transfer to the Bernabeu.

Speaking to the Futboleros show on MarcaTV, Jonathan Barnett said no discussions had taken place with the Spanish giants, and nothing would change unless Los Blancos were given permission by Spurs to do so.

The Welshman, who scored 21 goals for the north London side in the Premier League this season, has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid in recent days.

Barnett said:  “If Florentino is interested in Gareth Bale, then that would be an honour and we would listen, but his contract is with Tottenham. We are not free to talk to anyone.”

He also added that Bale – who won the PFA Player of the Year Award, PFA Young Player of the Year Award and FWA Footballer of the Year Award this year – was a better player than Brazilian playmaker Neymar, who recently signed for Barcelona.

“He is a much better player than Neymar, he has proven himself in one of the best leagues in the world, the Premier League. Whatever Neymar cost – Gareth Bale is worth more,” he stated.

The two Madrid sport dailies put their focus on Real Madrid’s attempt to sign Bale. “Bale is Florentino Perez’s golden bullet”, says As.

This newspaper claims that the Welshman has said he will not force an exit if there is no agreement between the clubs.

Marca states that Perez has given Zinedine Zidane two imperative tasks: “Accelerating Bale’s transfer and convincing Cristiano Ronaldo to renew his contract until 2018”.

As publishes the words of FIFA agent Ernesto Bronzetti, who declared that “Carlo Ancelotti’s signing for Real Madrid is very difficult at the moment”.

Meanwhile, Marca highlights an interview with Fabio Cannavaro, who has said that “returning to Real Madrid would be an honour”. The Italian has been pointed as Ancelotti’s assistant.

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has said the next manager of Los Blancos needs to be ambitious and have the ability to unite the dressing room.

Los Merengues are on the search for a new man to take over the helm, as current boss Jose Mourinho will leave the club after the final game of the season against Osasuna.

Speaking to sports newspaper Marca, the 27-year-old said the new manager would need to be a strong and ambitious character with complete trust in the playing staff.

He said Jupp Heynckes and Carlo Ancelotti – both mentioned as candidates for the job – would fit the bill.

“At a group level, we need a manager who trusts this squad and is ambitious; who is determined to achieve things. Heynckes and Ancelotti are two great managers, but we don’t know who’s coming,” he stated.

He also dismissed suggestions Mourinho had lost the trust of the players and demanded the Portuguese be respected for his achievements during his three-year stint in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid’s veteran defender Ricardo Carvalho has become the latest addition to big spending Monaco’s squad.

The newly promoted League 1 side have signed the 35-year-old on a one-year deal.

Carvalho, whose previous clubs include Porto and Chelsea, joins Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez at the Stade Louis II stadium in the principality, while the club is also expected to confirm the signing of Atletico de Madrid’s Colombian striker Radamel Falcao in a 58.5 million euro deal.

Speaking after singing his contract, the Portuguese defender said: “”I am delighted to join Monaco and participate in this new adventure. It is a new challenge for me.”

Monaco, who are bankrolled by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev, are aiming to launch an assault on the title next season.

Angel di Maria has performed below expectation this season and Real Madrid could open the door for the Argentinean to move to French League 1, despite having renewed his contract last summer.

Jorge Mendes, the midfielder’s agent, has been on a tour around France over the last few days and he has been reported to have met Paris Saint Germain and Monaco to speak about Di Maria.

According to Portuguese sports daily A Bola, PSG could offer 25 million euros for the Argentinean, as a way of facilitating Carlo Ancelotti’s move to Real.

French radio station RMC has also reported Monaco are also very interested in signing El Fideo. Monaco have already confirmed the transfers of James Rodriguez and Moutinho, and they are close to signing Radamel Falcao and Victor Valdes.

The team from the Principality is willing to create a dream team to achieve great results in national and international competitions and Di Maria would fit perfectly in that strategy.

The battle to sign Real Madrid defender Pepe has intensified after Turkish outfit Fenerbache became the latest to express their interest, it has been reported.

The Portuguese defender is known to be a target of Manchester City after Manuel Pellegrini, widely expected to be named as the club’s new manager, identified the 30-year-old to strengthen the defence.

But according to the Turkish newspaper Milliyet, the Super Lig runners-up are looking at the option of taking Pepe to the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium.

Pepe would command a fee of around 23.3 million euros, with the price inflated due to his long-term contract at the Bernabeu.

The defender fell behind youngster Raphael Varane in the pecking order in Los Blancos’ side before finding himself frozen out by Jose Mourinho for speaking out about the treatment of goalkeeper Iker Casillas.

Florentino Perez, Real Madrid president

Florentino Perez announced in an interview on Spanish radio station SER that Zinedine Zidane will lead his next project for Real Madrid.

“If next Tuesday there are no other candidates, I will take charge and we will first talk to the coach, because although people might not believe it, we haven’t spoken to him yet.”

“We also want Zidane to lead this sports project, because we would like him to be the manager one day. When the new boss arrives, he and Zidane will assess how we can improve the team,” Perez said.

When asked if the desired coach is Carlo Ancelotti, Perez replied that he is not speaking about that matter until next week.

Real’s president also spoke about Neymar’s signing for Barcelona. “We could have signed him three years ago, but Santos renewed his contract.”

“He is a magnificent player and we would have signed him if the economic conditions had not affected the club. We would have had to pay 150 million euros, I don’t know how much Barcelona has paid,” he claimed.

Asked about possible signings, Perez did not want to give many details about the latest transfer rumours: “Falcao is a magnificent player, but I’ve heard he’s signing for Monaco, and Lewandowski came to watch the Copa del Rey final, we spoke to him, but I don’t know if the new project leaders will be interested on him.

“Isco is also a great player, but we have many in that position, I don’t know if we need him”, he stated. “I would also like players from the second team to promote. Zidane does not think that Jese Rodriguez has to leave on loan this summer,” he added.

‘I think Carvajal will come back’

Florentino Perez also told SER that he thinks Daniel Carvajal will come back from Bayer Leverkusen this summer: “He is one of us. He put the first stone in our new Sports City.”

Speaking about the possible exits, Florentino declared that the future of Kaka and Xabi Alonso will be decided by Zidane and the next coach: “Kaka is a great person and Alonso still has one year in his contract, finding a substitute for him will be very difficult.

“I also don’t know if Coentrao will leave. He’s had a good season, and whoever wants him will have to pay his clause,” Perez claimed. And asked about Higuain’s future he claimed “nobody has spoken to Juventus”.
