Segunda B side Cadiz have confirmed they have lodged an official complaint over Denis Cheryshev’s appearance for Real Madrid in the two side’s Copa del Rey tie on Wednesday.

The Russian winger played, and scored, in the 3-1 win in Andalucia, but it emerged during the game that he we supposed to serving a one-match ban in the competition for picking up three yellow cards while on loan at Villarreal last season. Wednesday was the first opportunity for him to complete that ban.

Real boss Rafa Benitez said he removed Chryshev at half-time as an act of good faith as soon as he heard the winger was not supposed to be playing, and Real insist they had no notification from the Spanish Football Federation about any ban.

The tournament organisers are yet to make a decision on what will happen, but it is likely Los Blancos will be thrown out of the competition.

A statement on the Cadiz website read: “Cadiz CF have presented in the last few hours before the RFEF, a written complaint of alleged proper alignment of the football player Denis Cheryshev, as agreed unanimously at an extraordinary meeting of the board of directors.

“This morning we have received communication from the RFEF that the letter has been received and they have given a deadline to Real Madrid to present the arguments they deem appropriate.

“The club reiterates its utmost respect for Real Madrid and will not make any further statements until there is an announcement from the Competition Committee, who will dictate the magnitude of what happened.”
