Cristiano Ronaldo has said his main aim is to win trophies with Real Madrid rather than break individual goalscoring records, after he wrote himself into the history books again last night in his side’s 2-0 win over FC Copenhagen.

The 28-year-old became the first player to score nine goals in the group stage of the tournament, overtaking players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Filippo Inzaghi, who had the previous record of eight.

But speaking afterwards, he said although he was happy to score, his main focus in on winning silverware for the Santiago Bernabeu club.

“I feel good and I want to enjoy this moment. I wanted to score today, as I always do. All goals are important for the team to win and it was special today because of breaking the record. But I am not thinking about the records. The main aim is to win trophies,” Ronaldo stated.

Having spent the last two weeks out with a thigh injury, the Portugal international admitted he was still not at his best. Worryingly for defenders across La Liga, the forward said he has plenty of room for improvement.

He said: “I’m gradually getting there. Because of being out for two weeks it took me a while to get up to pace. I played pretty well, not my best, but I helped the team with a goal and I created several dangerous chances. I’m very happy.”
