Fabio Coentrao will miss Real Madrid’s Champions League group game against Juventus tomorrow night with an ankle injury, it has been confirmed.

The Portugal left-back sustained the injury in Los Blancos’ 3-2 win over Rayo Vallecano at the weekend and was taken off before towards the end of the first half.

A statement on the club’s official website said Coentrao underwent more thorough tests on Sunday that revealed the 25-year-old suffered a sprained ankle and could be out of action for a while. Manager Carlo Ancelotti has a ready made replacement in the form of Brazil left-back Marcelo.

“After tests carried out on Fabio Coentrao at the Sanitas La Moraleja Hospital, it has been confirmed that he has a sprained left ankle, which will continue to be monitored,” the statement read.

Los Blancos sit top of Group B with the maximum nine points after three games. They defeated Italian champions Juventus 2-1 at the Bernabeu two weeks ago. A win in Turin tomorrow would ensure qualification for the last 16.
