Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has said Real Madrid man Cristiano Ronaldo should win the Ballon d’Or.

The Portuguese forward is up against Leo Messi and Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer for the honour, which will be announced in January at the FIFA headquarters in Switzerland.

Ronaldo won the prize last season, and has taken his game to even greater heights in the last year, helping Los Blancos to win the Champions League, setting a new record for the amount of goals scored in a single season along the way. He also picked up winners’ medals in both the Copa del Rey and European Super Cup.

Speaking about who should win the award, Buffon failed to support the goalkeeping fraternity and back Neuer, instead claiming Ronaldo deserves it.

“It’s difficult for a goalkeeper to win. Lev Yashin was one of the best, but him winning the award (in 1963) was an exception. For a goalie to win the Ballon d’Or, he’d have to be really special compared to the others. And moreover, the award doesn’t always go to the best player, rather to the player who has won the most and who has been decisive in those victories,” he stated.

And he added: “Cristiano Ronaldo will probably win, because even if he hadn’t won the Champions League, he’s the most in-form player at the moment. His last two years have been fantastic and he deserves to be recognized for having maintained such a high level for all this time.”
