Gaizka Mendieta has said Madrid fans are slowly turning on Iker Casillas in the same way they have done in the past with club legends Raul, Guti and Fernando Morientes.

Club captain Casillas has featured more than 700 times for Los Blancos in his career but in recent months has been jeered by some sections of the Madridista support who have called for him to be replaced in the side.

Speaking to Goal.com, the ex-Barcelona man said Casillas has dealt with a tough situation well and that being booed by the home support is a tough end to a career having given so much to the 10-time Champions League winners.

“Unfortunately that is Madrid. It happened with Raúl, Guti and Morientes, now it is happening with Casillas. When you have been at the club so long you are going to have people that love you and people that hate you,” he stated.

And he continued: “You are going to have some media that like you, while the rest dislike are the opposite and want you out of the club. Every mistake is made a huge deal out of. It is not good for the club when you are under the spotlight and under such pressure.”
