Nicolás Otamendi would be a good replacement for Pepe at Real Madrid. This is what his agent thinks and it could be a great signing for Los Blancos although it would be a expensive one because Manchester City paid €48M to Valencia only two seasons ago.

One of Otamendi’s agents, Martín Sendoa, has said to Radio Intercontinental tha tthe defender would think to move to Madrid: “Nico has a similar profile to Pepe, who would leave at the end of the season. Real Madrid are following him since he played at Valencia, as Barcelona were doing. Who wouldn’t like to play at Real Madrid, the biggest team in the world. Perhaps I don’t want to talk that much…”, Sendoa said according to Fichajes.com.

Zinedine Zidane said recently that he wants Pepe to stay because he’s a symbol of the club. The Portuguese is again back with the group and he’s enjoying many minutes recently. However, his contract expires at the end of the current season and Chinese clubs want him. It might be Pepe’s last contract and the full back might be tempted by the great offers arriving from China.

Real Madrid second option is Jesús Vallejo. The former Zaragoza player is shining with Eintracht Frankfurt, so he could be ready to jump to Real Madrid first squad. However, Nico Kovac, his coach, wants him to stay and the Bundesliga club is already in talks with Los Blancos asking them to extend the deal with Jesús Vallejo.

Therefore, there could be an option for a fourth full back in Real Madrid squad in 2017/18. However, it could be unnecessary to sign a high profile defender as Nico Otamendi. Raphael Varane, Sergio Ramos and Nacho Fernández are very young defenders and they are showing their quality this season. The fourth defender would be a need but it could be better to give the opportunity to a young player like Vallejo or a symbol like Pepe rather to another star like Nico Otamendi, who could be upset if he doesn’t have the minutes he expects.

Real Madrid travel on Wednesday to Mestalla in a game for the 16th week of La Liga, postponed for the FIFA Club World Cup. The match was supposed to be played in December, when Valencia were struggling to stay out of the relegation zone with Cesare Prandelli. Some weeks later, the Italian manager resigned and Voro took over, obtaining good results.

Actually, Valencia were able to beat (2-0) Athletic Club on Sunday and the relegation is now far away. Los Chés are still in a bad position in the table, but they’re still a dangerous team for Real Madrid. Actually, the last two times Los Blancos travelled to Mestalla, they weren’t able to obtain the three points and the games had really bad consequences.

Real Madrid played in Mestalla the opening game of the year in the last two seasons. The 3rd of January of 2015, Los Blancos visit Valencia with Rafa Benítez on the bench. The manager was heavily criticized after the hard defeat (0-4) against Barcelona in El Clásico. The results weren’t better and Benítez had a match-ball against his former team, where he was able to win two La Liga trophies and one UEFA Cup.

Los Blancos couldn’t win the game despite taking the lead twice. Benzema scored the opener and Cristiano Ronaldo also wrote his name in the scoreboard but Dani Parejo and Paco Alcácer drew the game. Real Madrid lost and they started to lose several games against Atlético de Madrid and they were kicked out of the Copa del Rey by the city rivals. Ancelotti was sacked at the end of the season.

Mestalla is always a tough stadium for the big teams in La Liga. FC Barcelona won at the very last minute in a very controversial stadium and Atlético de Madrid also got the three points (0-2) despite missing two penalties. Last time Real Madrid won at Mestalla was in 2013 (2-3) thanks to a late goal scored by Jesé. In the same year, in 2013 with José Mourinho on the bench, Los Blancos thrashed (0-5) Valencia with a great performance of Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese is used to show off against Valencia.

For this important week, Zinedine Zidane has the full squad available for the first time in the season. Gareth Bale came back against Espanyol on Saturday with a great goal and the Welshman could start on Wednesday his first game this year. Besides, Sergio Ramos looks recovered after suffering small problems against Napoli. Danilo and Fabio Coentrao are also recovered and both could be in the list to travel to Valencia.

With the calendar full of fixtures, Zidane has all his players available to rotate the team and give minutes to all the players. He showed again on Saturday that all the players will be important until the end of the season, giving minutes to Isco, Nacho or Mateo Kovacic.

The big problem for Zizou now is leaving 6 players out of the list to visit Mestalla. Besides, with the BBC available, there will be less space for players like Lucas Vázquez, Isco or James Rodríguez, who have recently shown a good level covering Bale’s absence. However, as the manager has been showing all the season, if the footballers keep playing at a great level, they will have minutes to show their quality even if in the key games BBC, Modric or Toni Kroos are untouchable. Keylor Navas is not living his best moment since his arrival to Real Madrid. The Costa Rican keeper didn’t play last match against Espanyol in the regular season and it seems there are certain doubts with his last performances against Sevilla and Napoli. He has been in the usual line-up since Iker Casilla’s departure, but there has always been the potential arrival of David De Gea in the background.

In fact, in the summer of 2015 the Costa Rican almost signed with Manchester United because De Gea was going to be Los Blancos keeper. With this statistics is very difficult to win the Champions League and that’s why Keylor Navas must improve in the next games. The Costa Rican player does not seem to be focused and this may be due to the numerous rumours about David De Gea or Thibaut Courtois signings at the end of the season.

When Lucas Vázquez starts from te beginning, he is the player who runs more kilometers per game, when Zidane introduce him in line-up. Now we have two tough games. We will try to win the match at Mestalla. Today we scored two goals because we were patience”, Zidane explained

The French manager did many changes in the line up introducing Kiko Casilla between the sticks instead Keylor, Pepe in the defense who didn’t play in the regular season since December, Nacho in the left back, Kovacic in the midfield and Morata instead Benzema. We can highlight Bale’s return after being 88 days out of the fields and Zinedine Zidane gave him almost 20 minutes.

Los Blancos started the match controlling the ball and trying to have the possession because Espanyol were playing very defensive and there was no space. In the first 20 minutes Real Madrid didn’t have any chance and the only player who was involved in the attack was Lucas Vázquez. Morata had the first clear opportunity from a good pass of Cristiano Ronaldo in the 30th minute but Duarte prevented the first goal for Los Blancos. Only five minutes later Morata opened the scoreboard with a wonderful header from a great cross of Isco. Real Madrid went to the dressing room with one goal lead after a very tactical first half where there were almost no chances.

The second half started similar as the first one, with Real Madrid attacking with the goal of scoring the second one and Espanyol defending in their box looking for a counterattack. Zinedine Zidane decided to introduce Casemiro, after his great performance against Napoli, in the 60th minute replacing Kovacic in the midfield. In the 70th minute Gareth Bale entered the pitch replacing Morata who played a very good game scoring the first goal of the match. The Welshman played in the left side and Cristiano was the “new”striker of the team. Nacho had to leave the field in the last 10 minutes because of muscular problems and Marcelo replaced him in the left back. In the first ball Gareth Bale received, the Welshman scored the second goal of the match in a very fast counterattack with another good assist of Isco.

Los Blancos could achieve another victory in the regular season in a very calm match for the team managed by Zidane, where they played a very complete game against a team that did not create danger. Now Real Madrid must think in their next match that will be at Mestella next Wednesday.
