Varane

The injury problems continue at Real Madrid. Just few days after Zinedine Zidane had the full squad available against Valencia, the club has confirmed the injury of Raphael Varane. The French defender will be out of the pitches for 5 weeks due to a muscular problem.

“Following tests carried out today on Raphaël Varane at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a grade 2 muscle strain in his left hamstring. His recovery will continue to be assessed”, Real Madrid informed in their website.

Therefore the full back will be out of the team 5 weeks and he will miss some important games like the second leg of the Last 16 round in the Champions League against Napoli. In La Liga, Varane will miss the fixtures Las Palmas, Eibar, Betis and Athletic. Luckily, we have the international break at the beginning of April, so he’ll have more time to recover and the French full back should be back by the 8th of April, when Real Madrid face Atlético de Madrid in the derby.

Varane got injured at Mestalla and he was substituted in the 70th minute by Nacho Fernández. Zidane explained in press conference that the substitutions was made because of the injury and not because of the bad performance of the French full back. Actually, Varane lived a nightmare at Mestalla in one of his worst games with the white t-shirt.

Now, Zinedine Zidane has to choose between Nacho Fernández and Pepe to replace Varane. The Portuguese is fully recovered from his injury and he has also played some minutes recently. However, the Spaniard is doing a great season, both as a full back and as a left or right back. Hopefully, the team won’t feel Varane’s absence because Pepe and Nacho are really good replacements.

Manchester City v Mónaco was the best fixture in the first leg of the Last 16 round of the Champions League. We were delighted to see eight goals in a rollercoaster of game. The French team seemed to take advantage in the tie, but Manchester City reacted in the last 20 minutes to get an impressive 5-3 in the scoreboard. The second leg will be as exciting as the game at the Etihad Stadium.

One of the most impressive players of the game was Kylian Mbappé Lottin. The French attacker is only 18 years old but he has already played 18 games with Monaco in Ligue One, scoring 7 goals and giving 8 assists. Little by little, Mbappé is gaining a spot in the starting eleven together with Radamel Falcao. Mónaco are the best attacking team in Europe, and Mbappé is adding his piece of work to Jardim’s great performance.

Mbappé physical appearance and way of playing reminds the supporters to Thierry Henry. The former Arsenal star was also raised at Mónaco and he showed after his quality in Italy, England and Spain.

Mbappé’s contract with Mónaco ends in June 2019 but several big European teams are already asking the French club about his situation. Mónaco’s chairman, Dmitry Rybolovlev, is used to sell players but he always demand a lot of money. Actually, Real Madrid have the experience with James Rodríguez, whose transfer fee after the World Cup was €70M.

The French newspaper L’Equipe published that also Real Madrid have shown some interest in the young jewel. Los Blancos will have to fight against Bayern Munich or Barcelona to get Mbappé. A new star has been born and Los Blancos should follow him because he showed his great quality in the first big game in Europe. Not many players could do it in a historical venue like Etihad Stadium.

Real Madrid lost against Valencia and some players didn’t show their best level at Mestalla. The worst footballer on the pitch was Raphael Varane, who has good competitors in the bench to replace him in case Zidane decides to do it.

Raphael Varane could be blamed for the second goal scored by Valencia and he could do more also in the first goal conceded by Real Madrid. In the third minute of the game, Valencia are attacking in the right hand side and the cross arrives to Zaza. Behind him is Raphael Varane, who gives some space to the Italian footballer. Then, the former West Ham striker turns around and shoot to the angle. Great goal but the French could be closer.

Just six minutes after, Real Madrid are attacking trying to level the game. Varane is in Valencia’s pitch, he makes a poor control and he loses the ball. The counter attack finishes with Orellana’s goal. Keylor Navas could save it but the ball passes below the legs. It was the second goal in only 10 minutes.

The game wasn’t better for Raphael Varane in the second half. Zaza almost scores the third goal in another mistake committed by the French defender. He also hit Gaya’s head with his foot when he was trying to get the ball in a horrific tackle. The referee showed him the yellow card, but he could have been sent off for this action, although it was accidental.

Finally he was substituted in the 72nd minute by Nacho. Everybody thought it was because of his poor performance, but Zizou explained the substitution in press conference: Varane got hurt. He had some pain and we replaced him”, the manager said. The French defender has some muscular problems so he could miss the game against Villarreal on Sunday.

It’s not an important absence for Zizou because he has two reliable players to replace him. Actually, Nacho has been one of the best players this season and could play great as a full back or as a left or right back. Pepe, who didn’t travel to Valencia, is also recovered from his injuries and could play in the defense line.

Real Madrid were defeated in La Liga for the second time this season at Mestalla (2-1) against Valencia In the 10 first minutes, Los Blancos conceded two goals and they couldn’t come back, even if they tried the whole game.

Zidane was sorry about the defensive mistakes: “We lost the game in 10 minutes. We started well with the ball, we had chances but we made two mistakes and we conceded two goal. Then we had 80 minutes to come back to the game. We did it, but we lacked many things today. There was the opportunity to get some points but we didn’t do it. We’ve been punished. Then they lock themselves and they were better in the aerial plays”, Zidane analyzed.

The manager gave explanations about the poor start of the game: “In these 10 minutes we lacked concentration without the ball. Zaza played between the lines and he made us suffer. We were very opened and a bad control put you in trouble. This is very long. We played well with the ball, although we missed clarity in the last cross”.

Barcelona are only one point behind now, although Real Madrid have still one more game pending against Celta de Vigo. La Liga title is going to be tough to win: “We knew it before the game. This was not going to finish today, even if we had won. Now it’s even more complicated for us. Today only two teams could get points, and Valencia made it. Anyway, we are still at the top. We don’t look for excuses. We have to rest and think on Sunday”.

Finally, the manager spoke about how this defeat could affect the team: “I hope it doesn’t affect. We have to be focused. If you are not concentrated they punish you. We have to be a bit smarter. In these 10 minutes we weren’t both smart or focus. It was a good chance to get points. I don’t want to criticize Valencia. They did great in 10 minutes and then they defended. We congratulate them and now we have to think in Villarreal”, Zizou finished.

Real Madrid lost their second game of the season in La Liga at Mestalla (2-1) against Valencia, who scored two goals in the first 10 minutes that were lethal for Los Blancos. Zidane’s side tried in every way possible to score the equalizer but this time there wasn’t comeback. The gap with Barcelona is only 1 point now.

James Rodríguez was Zidane’s choice to assist Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo in the front, because Gareth Bale was again on the bench. And the game couldn’t start worse. Los Blancos had the ball but in the first counter attack, Simone Zaza, signed in the winter transfer window from West Ham United, scored an amazing volley. Real Madrid were trying to react after the first goal when the second net arrived in another counter attack, this time finished by Orellana, another winter transfer window. Actually, the Chilean footballer has scored twice this season against Real Madrid, one with Celta and one with Valencia.

It was the 9th minute and Real Madrid were already losing 2-0. It was time for the comeback. Zidane’s side tried and Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo looked very dangerous but they weren’t unable to break the good Valencia defense line. In the 44th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo headed a perfect cross from Marcelo to shorten the gap. Actually, the Portuguese was about to draw the game before the half time but his shot from outside the box and touched by Mangala went very close from the post.

Real Madrid started the second half pushing the rival and creating many chances, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema but the goal didn’t arrive. Bale came in replacing James Rodríguez in the 60th minute but Los Blancos couldn’t arrive clearly to Alves’ goal. Actually, Valencia could even score if the referee would have seen a penalty committed by Sergio Ramos. Both Varane and Sergio Ramos played a poor game.

Valencia played their best game of the season and Los Blancos couldn’t react properly after the first 10 shocking minutes. Zidane’s side in every single way possible, even with Sergio Ramos as a striker but the goal didn’t arrive. Actually, Keylor Navas tried to score in the last free kick. Now the gap with Barcelona is only 1 point. La Liga title is in the air.

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale scored his sixth goal in La Liga this season against Espanyol on Saturday in his return from the nursery room after having surgery in his ankle at the end of last year. Gareth Bale is one of the most important players for Real Madrid and he’s making a difference this year. Apart from securing the victory, the goal meant the 100th net for a British player in La Liga for Real Madrid.

Gareth Bale arrived in the summer of 2013 to Real Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur. In this time, the Welshman scored crucial goals like the one in the Copa del Rey final, but he’s also very efficient in La Liga, a title that he has still to win. He has scored 53 goals so far, being the best season the last one, when he scored 19 goals.

Bale is the best British player at Real Madrid. However, there are some other footballers who have shone with Los Blancos. We all have in mind David Beckham, who scored 13 goals with Real Madrid in La Liga from 2003 to 2007. Obviously, the free kicks were his strength.

The same number of goals scored Michael Owen. The former Liverpool player only stayed one season with Los Blancos, in 2014-15, and he was heavily criticized for the supporters. However he scored 13 goals in La Liga, having the highest ratio of goals scored to number of minutes played. He also scored one important goal in El Clásico against Barcelona.

Laurie Cunningham was the first British player to wear the white t-shirt in the modern era. He stayed in the club three season, from 1979 to 1983, and he was able to score 13 more goals. Finally, the eight goals remaining were scored by Steve McManaman. The former Liverpool player will be in all madridistas heart for his goal in the Champions League final of 2000. However, his best goal came against Oviedo in La Liga:

Goals scored by British footballer:

53 goals Gareth Bale
13 goals David Beckham, Laurie Cunningham and Michael Owen
8 Steven McManaman

Dembele-Celtic-GI

Moussa Dembele is another option for the attacking line of Real Madrid. According to the British newspapers, Los Blancos have joined the race to get the French star along with Chelsea, Manchester City, Arsenal, PSG or Bayern Múnich.

Moussa Dembele is only 20 years old and he’s playing for Celtic Glasgow in the Scottish Premier League. This is his first season in Scotland, but he’s been able to score 13 goals in the Premier League and five more goals in the Champions League, two of them against Manchester City, one in Germany against Borussia Monchedgladbach and two more in the preview stages of the competition.

Celtic signed Dembele this summer from Fulham, in the Championship, and they paid £300.000. Now, the striker is taxed with £40M, so the business for Celtic could be perfect if they are able to seal the deal this summer.

Leading the race for the striker is Chelsea. Antonio Conte is looking for another striker in the transfer market just in case Diego Costa decides to leave. Even if the Spaniard stays, the Blues need more competitors for Costa, as they will be playing also the Champions League.

Dembele could be a good investment also for Real Madrid. Karim Benzema has been heavily criticized although he played at a great level against Napoli. Besides, Álvaro Morata is not happy with his current situation and he might go back to Italy if Zidane doesn’t give him more minutes. For this reason, another spot in the attacking line could be available in the summer and Dembele could be the one filling the space.

Dembele made his Premier League debut in the season 2013/14. He played 7 minutes against West Ham in November and he almost played the full game against Everton in March. Fulham were relegated to the Championship and Dembele had many more opportunities. In his second season, the striker found the net 15 times in 43 games. Then, Celtic were very quick and they signed the French-born striker.

Zinedine Zidane spoke in press conference before travelling to Valencia to play a postponed game that was scheduled in December. However, Los Blancos won the Champions League and they had to play the FIFA Club World Cup, so they had to put off this fixture.

For this reason, Los Blancos can now open a gap of four points with FC Barcelona: “If we win this game, we have three points more. We will have to work against a team who has been playing much better and in a difficult stadium”. Actually, Real Madrid couldn’t win at Mestalla in the last two seasons.

Zizou wanted to give a message before travelling to Mestalla: “It’s always the same. We know La Liga is difficult. We are in February and we are fine, but this doesn’t mean anything. Tomorrow we have another tough game. It’s a game that only Valencia and Real Madrid are playing and we can get these points”

Isco was the best player against Espanyol and the playmaker has still to renew his contract with Real Madrid. The Spaniard is thinking twice before signing it because he doesn’t know if he’s going to have many minutes: “I understand Isco has doubts. I listen to him. But I think he’s really focus now. He’s very good. The thing of rotating the team is that a footballer is going to play 20 or 25 games and if you don’t put him in the next one, he is not going to like it. It happened to me. The player always wants to play. I want everybody to be focused and this is happening right now. I want this until the end of the season”, Zidane explained.

Regarding Pepe’s future, Zidane says he’s quite happy with him: “Pepe is an important player and when he plays, he always does it well. The contract is not my business. I’m going to count on him until the end”.

The Real Madrid manager doesn’t want to think about the future and he’s only focus in the current season: “I’m cheerful because of what we are doing right now. We can’t think about what is going to happen in June. Then, we’ll see what happens this summer”.

Zidane confirmed that Cristiano Ronaldo will play against Valencia and spoke about his new role: “He has played all his lived there. It’s his role. And of course he’ll score from there. He’s a star and he can play anywhere, but his natural position and where he’s scored 400 goals is from there”, the manager finished.
