Early this Monday, the French newspaper ‘France Football’ started to announce the 30 final nominated to win the Ballon D’Or trophy next December. Among the finalist, we can find six Real Madrid players: Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, Ramos, Modric, Kroos and Gareth Bale. This is no big surprise, as Real Madrid won the Champions League.

In order to give some expectation to the trophy, the newspaper was announcing the 30 nominated little by little. The first three players to be nominated were Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Sergio Agüero. We can also find in the list two Atlético de Madrid players, Antoine Griezmann and Diego Godín. Actually, Griezmann, Cristiano Ronaldo and Bale are the three favourites to the trophy after being the finalist in the UEFA Best player trophy back in summer.

Real Madrid won the Champions League, so their stars are the main favourites to raise the title. Especially Cristiano Ronaldo, who was the top scorer in the Champions League, kicked the final penalty in the clash in San Siro against Atlético de Madrid and even won the Euro with Portugal in France. Despite his poor end of the season, the Portuguese is the big favourite to win his fourth Ballon D’Or trophy.

Gareth Bale has also been shortlisted for the award. The Welshman was very important for Real Madrid to win the Champions League despite not scoring any goal. On top of that, he was the most important man for Wales in their first appearance in an Euro, arriving to the semifinals. Bale is expected to be in the top-three list this year in the trophy.

Toni Kroos was announced later than his colleagues. The German midfielder was key for Zinedine Zidane and played all the important games. The German midfielder also helped his national team to reach the Euro semifinals, when Germany faced France and Griezmann finished with the World Cup champions options. Also, another Real Madrid midfielder, Luka Modric, is among the nominated after his role this year at Real Madrid.

Finally, the French newspaper also announced that the two Los Blancos defenders Pepe and Sergio Ramos are among the nominated. The Portuguese won both Champions League and Euro playing a key role in the finals, whereas the Spaniard scored another crucial goal in Milan.

The other footballers shortlisted to win the Ballon D’Or are: Iniesta, Koke, Ibrahimovic, Lewandowski, Aubameyang, Buffon, Higuaín, Dybala, De Bruyne, Agüero, Godín, Griezmann, Muller, Messi, Mahrez,Payet, Rui PAtricio, Neymar, Luis Suárez, Neuer, Vidal, Lloris, Modric, Kroos, Cristiano Ronaldo, Pepe, Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale.

Real Madrid celebrated on Sunday a new assembley with their Socios, the season ticket holders who are the owners of the club. Florentino Pérez had to explain his project for the future of Real Madrid, approve the budget for the next season and reply to the socios’ questions. Among other important things, they approved the new president of honour.

Several years ago, Florentino Pérez proposed the figure of president of honour. It should be clear that the best footballer who has ever worn Los Blancos t-shirt had to be the president, so Alfredo di Stéfano accepted the deal. However, the Argentinian born player passed away on July 2014, so the club needed a new president of honour.

On Sunday it was approved that this new president of honour should be Francisco Gento. “I propose with huge emotion and love Francisco Gento López as Real Madrid president of honour”, Florentino said. The whole assembley stood up and applause the club legend, “the only player with six Champions League, 601 games with Real Madrid”, Florentino remembered. “I know Alfredo (Di Stéfano) would be proud of you to replace him”, the president told Gento.

Francisco Gento (El Astillero, Spain, 1933) is one of the big legends of the club. He played in one of the best teams in the history of football together with Di Stéfano, Coppa, Rial… He is the only player to have won six European Cup trophies -currently the Champions League- and the only one to have won 12 La Liga titles.

He arrived to Real Madrid in the year 1953 from Racing the Santander making his debut against FC Barcelona and retired in 1971 with Los Blancos. In that time, apart from La Liga and the European Cups, he won 2 Copa del Rey trophies, one Intercontinental Cup and two Latin Cups. He was called “La Galerna del Cantábrico” (The Gale of the Cantabrian Sea) due to his speed as a winger.

Real Madrid are again top of the table after the victory (2-1) against Athletic Club on Sunday. It was a suffered game for Los Blancos, who had to wait until the 82th minute to see the goal of the victory, scored again by Álvaro Morata.

Despite Los Blancos didn’t play a great game against Athletic, who missed some of the most important players of the squad, the coach Zidane was very happy with the match: “I like everything, we can have more accuracy or less. If you score all the chances, you thrash your rival, but the most important thing is to give everything and I saw the team with aim to work. I’m happy with my players”.

Real Madrid had to wait until the last minutes to see the victory, but Zidane is not worried for this: “Most of the games are like this. In football you need to suffer. There aren’t any easy games. We are not going to win La Liga without working, without suffering, you cannot score five or six goals so easy. Footballers gave everything. If we didn’t have this attitude, we would be worried but it’s not the case”.

Álvaro Morata and Lucas Vázquez came in from the bench again and they were very important to win the game: “Both are very well. They play and every time they come in, they do it pretty well. We’ll see, but they’ve played several times in the starting eleven. The most important thing is that the team stays together, just like now”, Zidane said. Maybe both have the chance to start on Wednesday fixture against Cultural Leonesa in Copa del Rey.

Again, Real Madrid couldn’t have a clean sheet, perhaps a problem for the future: “I’m not worried. The rivals put you in difficulties. Of course we need to improve. We are going to improve these details so we don’t receive these kind of goals”.

Real Madrid suffered to beat (2-1) Athletic Club at Santiago Bernabéu stadium. We had to wait until the 83th minute to see the crucial goal from Álvaro Morata, who put Los Blancos top of the table in La Liga again. Real Madrid got the three points, whereas Atlético de Madrid lost in Seville, so Zidane’s side recover the first position in the table.

It wasn’t easy. Again, Los Blancos didn’t play well and was a completely different team from the one we saw against Betis only 8 days ago. Even if Zidane repeated the same starting eleven, Los Blancos didn’t play as a team and didn’t pressure enough Athletic Club, who travelled to Madrid with many important players missing like Aritz Aduriz, Muniain, De Marcos or Balenziaga.

The game started well for Real Madrid. The team took the lead in the 7th minute after an assist from Isco to Benzema, who scored easily. It was supposed to be a quite night at Santiago Bernabéu and even Real Madrid had more chances to widen the gap. But Athletic Club drew with a goal from Sabin Merino in the 28th after a big error in the defence.

Real Madrid were playing good with the ball but really bad without it. The Basque team had many chances to take the lead, especially Iñaki Williams, who couldn’t beat Keylor Navas even if he stood a couple of time alone against the goalkeeper. Zidane had to change something in the team and Lucas Vázquez and Morata came in, again, like in the match with Legia Warsaw. Real Madrid supporters were angry with the French manager after he decided to change Isco, the best of Los Blancos tonight.

Luckily for Los Blancos, the goal arrived. Gareth Bale served a great assist from the left and Morata scores in front of Iraizoz. Like the game against Sporting Portugal, Morata was again the protagonist in the day of his birthday. Cristiano Ronaldo had some chances but he played a really poor game and was whistling by the supports. A night to be forgotten by the Portuguese star. Finally, three important points staying at Bernabéu, so Los Blancos are top of the table.

Los Blancos will receive Athletic of Bilbao in the ninth match of the regular season at Santiago Bernabéu. The team manage by Zidane wants to continue having victories after the thrashing in the last game of La Liga against Betis where we could saw new faces in Zidane’s line up because of the injuries. Los Blancos will face this match with the absences of very important player for Los Blancos as Sergio Ramos, Luka Modric and Casemiro.

It’s the 14th match Real Madrid will play in their stadium without any defeat. The spectacular balance is 12 wins (seven in La Liga and the five matches played in the Champions League). Zinedine Zidane can boast of having the team which have more different scorers in the competition with 14 different players.

Athletic of Bilbao will travel without their star Artiz Aduriz. The Basque striker finished the match of last Thursday of European League against Genk with muscular problems and Athletic decided that they don’t have to risk with his best player of the squad. Athletic have won five of their last six games in the La Liga after a very bad early season. The victims of the Basque team before the match at Santiago Bernabéu were Deportivo (0-1), Valencia (2-1), Granada (1-2), Sevilla (3-1) and Real Sociedad (3-1) in the last Basque derby played at San Mamés.

The last time Athletic won Real Madrid in their stadium was in the 2005-2006 season where we could see the current Real Madrid manager in his stage as a footballer. The Basque team won 0-2 with goals of the now player of the New York City Iraola, and very offensive left back Del Horno.

This is the list of 19 players of Real Madrid:

Goalkeepers: Keylor Navas, Kiko Casilla and Rúben Yáñez
Defenders: Carvajal, Pepe, Varane, Nacho, Marcelo y Danilo.
Midfielders: Kroos, James, Kovacic, Asensio and Isco
Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema, Bale, Lucas Vázquez y Morata.

There’s a player of Manchester City Real Madrid want to sign because he is having problems in the beginning of this season, the player is Sergio Aguero. The Argentine forward didn’t start good the season and his manager said that if he wants to leave Manchester, its’ up for him.

Real Madrid will do an offer in the next transfer market of next summer since in England they suggest that Pep Guardiola is meditating if Aguero should leave the team or not. The Argentine striker didn’t start the season as Guardiola thought and he is not having the confidence he had with the last Manchester City manager, Manuel Pellegrini.

According to the Mirror Sport, the British newspaper published on it’s cover that Guardiola opened the door to Kun Aguero if he wants to leave. The Spaniard manager said in the past press conference: “Sergio will leave Manchester City when he desires”, Guardiola said. This situation has made that Real Madrid will be again interested in the Argentina’s striker services. It’s not the first time Los Blancos want to sign Aguero, but it seems Florentino Pérez wants to do a very good offer with the desire of having four strikers as Cristiano, Benzema, Bale and the Argentine.

Florentino Pérez has never hidden that Sergio Aguero is a striker that Real Madrid president likes a lot as he tried to sign him when he was in Atlético Madrid but eventually he was transferred to Manchester City. During the lasts transfer markets, Florentino has contacted him and his agents to probe a possible return to the Spanish League, but, this time, playing at Santiago Bernabéu could be closer than ever, according to the press.

We must remember Real Madrid have two very good strikers in their squad as Álvaro Morata and Karim Benzema. Both have very good conditions to play in Real Madrid, but they have to be 100% because we have seen that Florentino is searching forwards despite having two in his team that are great players.

Zinedine Zidane spoke before the match Los Blancos will face against Athletic Bilbao at Santiago Bernabéu after the victory in Champions League with the thrashing to Legia Varsovia. The French manager highlighted the match of tomorrow, Casemiro’s Brazilian national team call, the debate between Morata and Benzema and the renewal of Pepe.

Los Blancos will receive this weekend Athletic Bilbao at Santiago Bernabéu. The Basque team lost their last match of the European League against Genk in a very poor game of the team manage by Valverde. Zidane talked about the match of tomorrow: ” The game of tomorrow is very important for us. We must continue the line of this week. We ‘re are playing good and we are looking forward of playing tomorrow’s game”,Zidane explained.

Casemerio is included in the list of Brazil for the qualifying of the World Cup of Russia. Brazil will face Argentina and Peru the 11th and 16th of November and this is what Zidane thinks about this topic: ” It’s a good question. We have to be many attentive to his evolutions. We don’t know exactly what will happen. The most important thing is Casemiro’s recovery. He is in the list of Brazil and we’ll see if he can perform the national teams matches. At the moment is very complicated because he hasn’t train with us “, Zidane affirmed.

Morata could be in the starting 11 in the match of tomorrow against Athletic Bilbao and the journalist didn’t doubt in making it: ” I talk with every day. He can give us a lot of variables. The season is very long and he will be part of the team’s success. I can’t say you if he will play form the beginning tomorrow. There’s not debate between Morata and Benzema, bot are very important for us “, Zidane said.

There’s many player that had renewed their contract with Los Blancos, but Pepe’s renewal it’s standstill:” Pepe it’s an important player and the club appreciate his work. Is the tenth year here, and we must take into account what he has done with this shirt”, Zidane affirmed.

Real Madrid have many important injuries in the squad as Modric, Casemiro and Sergio Ramos but Zinedine Zidane has chosen well the players that have to replace them. Isco is replacing Modric, Kovacic is playing in Casemiro’s position and Varane is the new full back with Pepe. Sergio Ramos recovery is going better than expected and he could arrive to the derby against Atlético Madrid on the 19th of November.

Just two weeks after the injury of Sergio Ramos playing with his national tema against Albania, it is estimated that the Spaniard full back will remain about two weeks out of the pitch. This means that Sergio Ramos will not appear in the five matches Los Blancos have to play before the national team break in November. Real Madrid captain may return to the fields after the national teams matches being the first game against Atlético Madrid at Vicente Calderón.

Nobody thought Sergio Ramos will appear so soon because he had an sprained knee and the recovery is very delicate. According to the preliminary estimations, Ramos would surely lose the derby, but in these moments, the Spaniard defender aims to reach the first final of the season. This could happen if the evolution is still as fast as now and if he doesn’t have any relapse in his injury.

Sergio’s physical strength is being a key factor in his recovery. His body is responding perfectly to the treatment that has been prescribed by the medical services of the Club. All the people of Valdebebas are closely following his injury because he is a very importante player for Real Madrid and he is the captain that gave the club very important trophies and joys. It is the season number twelve in Madrid and right now he is the captain and one of the best full backs in all the world.

A Real Madrid player has renewed his contract until 2020 only a few weeks ago. This player is Luka Modric. Modric is a key player for Los Blancos and he has chosen to continue in Madrid instead of a multimillionaire offer from a Chinese club.

The Croatian midfielder expressed his happiness in the press conference he gave on Wednesday for the new contract with Real Madrid affirming his desire to finish his career at Real Madrid.

Modric election has been a major financial sacrifice for the Croatina player. According to Marca at least one of the Chinese Super League teams offered him a salary that doubled the amount of his deal with Real Madrid. The first offer consisted in a contract of four years with a salary of €15M nets per year and just before the Croatian midfielder started his negotiation with Los Blancos, the Chinese Club increases his offer to €20M per year. A salary than not everyone can have.

However, Luka is a football passionate and he is playing in the best team of the world, having a very good salary and playing the best competitions of this sport. Modric gave priority to football and he decided to stay in Real Madrid, where his salary is eight million net per season, approximately. This amount is significantly lower than the one offered from China, but higher than his previous contract with Los Blancos four and a half million per year.

Luka Modric is one of the best midfielders in all the entire world and we can say that the signing of the Croatian at Real Madrid has been satisfactory, not only because of his quality, Modric is an example for all the children that want to be professionals of this sport. This renewal has been the best news for Real Madrid in all the year because the Croatian midfielder is highly estimated by Real Madrid supporters.

We recently spoke about an interesting book that every ‘madridista’ should read: “The Real Madrid Way”. The book and its author analyzed “how values created the most successful club in the world”. We have interviewed the author, Steven Mandis, who is a former Goldman Sachs employee. He has given us his opinion about everything around Real Madrid and how the club can be improved in the next few years:

Question (Q): Why did you choose Real Madrid as a topic for your book?

Answer (A): I did not intend to write about Real Madrid. A fascinating and lucky chain of events ultimately led to the project. A friend of mine and his father (who is on the Board of Real Madrid) introduced me to one of the key executives of the club because they thought we would enjoy each other’s company and maybe he could guest lecture at one of my Columbia Business School classes. After meeting the executive, Carlos, and essentially asking him “what is the most important element of success for a sports team – money? talent? data analytics?”, I was surprised at his answer. He said it was the values and expectations of the community / socios. After the book and movie ‘Moneyball’ and his engineering and executive background and proficiency with numbers, I was waiting for him to say data analytics. After learning more, I felt it would be interesting to study the club in depth. I couldn’t believe they said yes. I didn’t know much about Real Madrid or European football. I don’t speak Spanish. But I think my outsider status, business and academic background (not being in the media or sports industry), and their ability to review my previous book about Goldman Sachs to understand my approach — all helped.

(Q) What is Florentino Pérez role in the success of Real Madrid?

(A): Obviously, Florentino is very important to the history and success of Real Madrid. However, it is a talented and dedicated management team and board that executed a tremendous turnaround, and it was Real Madrid’s history that served as the inspiration. People miss the team aspect of who had to execute a strategy and vision. Clearly, Florentino was the visionary (and Jorge Valdano and Jose Angel Sanchez and others had a part). Florentino believed that the key to success was for the values and expectations of the community to be reflected by the club overall and played out in the pitch. Bernabeu’s 1955-1960 era with Di Steffano was the inspiration. Many just look at the stars on the pitch. But Bernabeu was an innovator on how to pay for them and how to develop the passion and connections to a global audience. This is important because Real Madrid is not backed by a billionaire or corporation that can fund losses. So on the pitch and off the pitch are very much interconnected. Florentino understood this. Also, I discovered the financial situation was so precarious in 2000 Florentino personally guaranteed almost 150 million euros to afford the necessary investments to implement the vision. So Florentino was obsessed to save the club and had deep conviction in the strategy.

(Q) Despite we can Real Madrid is the most successful football club in the world, the club hasn’t achieved this success in the football pitch, failing to win La Liga since 2012. Why do you think this has happened?

(A): Real Madrid has the most trophies overall, including 11 Champions Leagues/European Cups and 32 La Liga trophies. So on the pitch they are the most successful. Off the pitch, they are the most valuable sport team and have the most revenues. I know Forbes now just ranked them #2 after the depreciation of the Euro, but if you speak to experts (as described in my book) you will understand why Real Madrid is worth significantly more than Forbes reports. Experts that I spoke to place the value of the club close to $6 billion.

As for winning, there are a few things to note. First, today talent has never been narrower among players. In his book Sports Equation, Michael Mauboussin points out that the difference between first place and twentieth place in the Olympic Men’s Marathon in 1932 was around 39 minutes, while in 2012 it was 7 minutes. In Rio, it was 6 minutes. People are blinded with huge sums being paid for the marginal difference because clubs are looking for any statistical advantage. But do you ever notice when a star player is not 100%, they appear “average.” This is because the difference is small, so a small issue (from personal distractions to mental fatigue to physical fatigue to getting back into shape from injury etc) can bring the player to average. Second, Real Madrid follows the passion, values and expectations of the fans – which to see beautiful, attacking, elegant football. Real Madrid fans want to see the best players in the world take “paint” (the ball) and paint a beautiful painting on the canvas (the pitch) for 90 minutes. Like painting, Real Madrid’s style is artistically improvised. This improvisation requires players to play together very often to know what each otherwise do. Clubs that have a system where players’ roles are defined can more easily rotate players or replace injured players. Teams with a system also have performance issues in new line ups but not as statistically meaningful as a team relying on improvisation. The issue is that there is something that I call the “too tired effect.” Players do need to be rotated to keep fresh for the end of the season. This places Real Madrid at a statistical disadvantage because the players need to play together more for effective improvisation. It can be a slight negative, but something that I learned is that 1 goal in one game switches your narrative – in many seasons Real Madrid lost the Spanish League by 3 points or less – meaning one goal changes the outcome of one game which changes who wins and who loses La Liga. One offsides call / or non call, one penalty given or not given, one ball hits the post and goes out / in – this literally could have determined the champion last year. Also, this too tired effect is pronounced because football is a highly interconnected game with a series of passes typically leading to a goal. Therefore, if a player is slightly slower or can’t jump as high as his teammates expect that the few precious opportunities are lost by inches. Lastly, you need to understand luck. In the book The Numbers Game, Sally and Anderson disclosed that the winning percentage of a team favored by bettors won 66% of the time in basketball and only 50% of the time in football/soccer. In basketball there is a shot clock to ensure that both teams have plenty of opportunities to score and defend. Therefore, typically the better team will win with more opportunities to show they are better. Football, has no shot clock and fewer opportunities. So a non favored team can sit back and defend and waste time, reducing the opportunities – and maybe get lucky with a penalty or missed defensive assignment. In addition, most goals are scored by random (can’t be often replicated) events (e.g. a lucky bounce or deflection). Add all of this up, and it is what makes football so compelling to watch.

Lastly, with so many matches, club tournaments, international matches, qualifying and tournaments I think that Real Madrid, the coaches and players need to prioritize to the values and expectations of the community. My research indicates for various historical and heritage reasons (e.g. help found FIFA and European Cup), the Real Madrid community sees itself as more European/Global and values winning the Champions League / European Cup (with Real Madrid’s unique values / style) the most. Obviously, everyone wants to win all trophies but every organization has to have priorities. So all things being equal, my guess is that decisions are made to align with the community’s goal.

realmadridway
(Q) Have Barcelona copied ‘the Real Madrid Way’ with the signings of Neymar, Luis Suárez, etc?

(A): Real Madrid and Barcelona are both different and extraordinary and, in many ways, need each other to define their communities and measure and push themselves. The teams are starting to have more similarities in certain aspects. In most businesses, copying what works regularly happens – and football is no exception. The number and quality of Real Madrid’s academy graduates are higher than people perceive it. Barcelona has fewer academy graduate starters than people perceive. In both, academy graduates play important roles.

(Q) You said in the book, “chasing the most talented (and most expensive) players can be a recipe for a winning record, but also financial disaster”. Is Florentino Pérez model sustainable?

(A): I believe the objective is to have a sustainable economic – sport model to ensure that the club always stays a club owned by socios. You need to understand this in order to understand organizational decision making and strategic decisions. I believe this is the element that is most overlooked when people comment on the business side or the pitch side. I think the fact that the club is so transparent (including letting me publish what I found) gives you a sense that they are confident that the culture, history, values of the club can’t be replicated or copied (while data analytics and marketing strategies can and are). So Real Madrid’s competitive advantage is the values and passion in its fans hearts and souls. For Real Madrid it starts and ends there.

(Q) What are the challenges for the future?

(A) We will see if the Real Madrid community (including fans and players) accepts rotations. Rotations keep players fresh. Also, the fewer minutes on the pitch then the lower statistical chance of being injured or being too tired which can lead to injuries. A coach with the qualities of Zidane helps because he has the authority and credibility to have some leeway with the community in his decisions.
