Former Real Madrid star Xabi Alonso says he has no regrets over his decision to leave the club last summer for Bayern Munich.

The World Cup winner player for Los Blancos for five years and was a key member of the side that won the Champions League and Copa del Rey in 2014. He left that summer in somewhat of a surprise move as he wanted a fresh challenge.

And his decision to experience something new proved correct as he’s gone on to establish himself as a central figure in Pep Guardiola’s side, winning the Bundesliga in his first season in Germany.

Speaking to Bayern’s official website, Alonso said he is happy with his decision and has np plans to retire soon.

“I’ve really enjoyed being at the club so far. It’s an excellent experience for me and I still hope to have more success this season than last. I feel as good as I have done before and I enjoy every minute on the pitch. If that wasn’t the case, it would be the moment to stop,” he commented.

And he said he’d love to win the Champions League again whilst facing his friends from Madrid.

“It would be the third team I’ve won the trophy with, something that only Clarence Seedorf has managed to do to date. It would be something very special [to face Madrid], something exciting. I wore the white jersey for five years and I still have a close relationship with the club, and with the people there, just as I do with Liverpool.”

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has suggested star striker Cristiano Ronaldo could leave the club next summer – but hopes he doesn’t.

Ronaldo, who is the club’s all-time leading scorer, has netted 11 goals in 11 games this season so far and is once again one of the favourites to win the Ballon d’Or in January.

The 30-year-old still has a number of years to run on his long-term deal at the Santiago Bernabeu but speculation surrounding his future have never gone away. The player himself has never hidden his love of Manchester United prompting stories he could end his career there.

He’s also a fan of the US and it’s been suggested he could follow in the footsteps of former Real Madrid players Raul, Kaka and David Beckham in switching to the MLS. Meanwhile, Wednesday’s Champions League opponents have the financial muscle to provide him with an attractive offer.

Speaking to AS, Calderon stated: “I’ve heard rumours about strong interest from PSG. As a former President and a follower of Madrid, I hope it will never happen. But who knows in the world of football. I think his departure is possible.

“Right now Cristiano has not expressed [a desire to leave]. I think he will make his decision at the end of the season, in terms of trophies won and how he feels. Meanwhile, we follow the mystery.Cristiano is priceless. What he gives the team, in terms of goals and mentality, has no equivalent apart from [Lionel] Messi.

“And because if PSG or Manchester United buy Ronaldo they’ll have no problem paying off the price. He’ll raise it in marketing revenue. If Madrid sell for €100m, certainly they’ll be rich, but they could never buy a player like him.”

Angel di Maria

PSG winger Angel di Maria says facing his former club Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday night was ‘special’.

The two European powerhouses drew 0-0 in the French capital in a game of few clear cut chances. Both teams look are unbeaten still in the group stage and look on course to qualify for the knock out stages of the competition.

Di Maria wasn’t at his best on the night and was withdrawn after 67 minutes. But speaking after the match, told journalists he enjoyed seeing some familiar faces.

“This was a special game for me, as I only left Madrid a little more than a year ago. Facing my old team-mates was special, even if it didn’t turn out great for me. We had a lot of chances to win the game. We did that against one of the top four teams in Europe. The important thing is that we were able to pick up a point,” he commented.

Di Maria was part of the team that helped Los Blancos win their 10th Champions League in 2014 – the much coveted Decima. He left that summer to join Manchester United but the move didn’t work out and he signed for PSG this summer for a fee of around 60 million euros.

Raphael Varane has recently confessed he rejected an offer from Paris Saint-Germain in 2011 because their project didn’t convince him. However, sources from France have revealed the French club are ready to launch a new bid to sign the centre-back.

The 22-year-old is having a superb start to the season and has become a target for several European clubs. Manchester United and Chelsea have long been interested in bringing him, but none of them would be able to meet the offer PSG are reportedly preparing.

The player’s current market value according to Transfermarkt http://www.transfermarkt.com/raphael-varane/profil/spieler/164770 is 25 million euros, but the French side would be willing to at least double that amount.

Varane arrived at Real Madrid in 2011 as a personal recommendation of Zinedine Zidane to Florentino Perez and he is one of the president favourites, so there is little chance he will let him go no matter how high the offer.

The Frenchman has confessed he rejected PSG once, at it seems like there could be a second time. “PSG were interested in signing me, but we never entered negotiations. The Qatari project at the club was all still a bit unclear to me. I could not see myself join PSG, because I did not know how they would develop. The move to Real Madrid was a logical choice,” he told Le Parisien earlier this week.

Denis Cheryshev says him and his fellow Real Madrid youth products are ready to be called upon whenever boss Rafa Benitez needs them.

Cheryshev featured in the goalless draw with PSG in the Champions League on Wednesday night along with fellow former youth players Lucas Vasquez and Jese Rodriguez.

Speaking to journalists after the game, the 24-year-old Russian international said the players put in a strong performance despite the team missing a number of high profile stars.

“The team put in a focused performance and we had our opportunities, but we didn’t put them away and it’s a good result here. There were periods when we dominated and periods when they dominated, and this can be considered a fair result because it was a pretty even game,” he commented.

He added: “We have to be ready for when we’re called on. Jesé and Lucas had good games and our job is to keep on pushing, have a positive mindset and carry on working hard.”

Speaking about the opposition, he praised PSG as being a strong team with fantastic qualities.

“They’re a fantastic side, they were playing at home with their fans behind them and facing them is always difficult. We put in a focused display at the back, we were really compact, defended well and at the end of the day it’s a good result and we have to follow it up at the Bernabéu.”

Sergio Ramos says the draw with PSG on Wednesday night was a positive result taking into account the number of injured players missing.

Los Blancos earned a point in the goalless draw that ensures they remain unbeaten in all competitions this season and have still conceded just two goals along the way.

Real took on the French champions in Paris without the likes of Gareth Bale, Karim Benzema, Luka Modric and James Rodriguez – all sidelined with injury.

Speaking to reporters after the game, the Real captain express his delight at the performance.

“There’s no doubt that it was a difficult game against quality opposition who compete really well, and that’s what the Champions League is all about. We’ll return home happy after a really good performance,” he said.

And he continued: “We competed really well, perhaps we lacked a little bit of cutting edge up front, but we’re happy at having come away with a positive result from a difficult ground to go to. These games are like cup finals and the team that makes the fewest mistakes takes the points, and the fine details determine the result.”

He also hailed the players who stepped in, saying Los Blancos have a strong squad this season.

“The injuries mean we’re not in our best shape, but you have to look forward. We shouldn’t settle for anything or make excuses, we have strength in depth, with players coming in eager to contribute. Today we saw that with Jesé [Rodríguez] and Lucas [Vázquez], who are able to perform well and compete, and they help us to improve as a team.”

Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro says Los Blancos will win trophies this season if they show the same work rate, determination and solidarity as they did in the draw with PSG.

The 10-time Champions League winners visited the French capital without a host of first teamers but emerged with a point against one of Europe’s strongest teams. Real are unbeaten in all competitions this season and have conceded just two goals along the way.

Against PSG, the controlled possession for large spells and had the better of the opportunities on a night of few clear cut chances.

Talking to the press afterwards, Brazilian Casemiro stated: “We played against a top team and we put in a really good performance. There’s no doubt that we’re all contributing and working hard, we’re developing into a really solid unit. This is the way to win trophies. I’m not worried about the draws, because we put in a really good display against a top team. We knew that this was a difficult place to come to.”

He also said the Los Blancos squad was strong and talented and could cope with the injury crisis.

“Today we showed that we have a terrific squad. Whoever plays is ready to do so. The players who came in, who aren’t usually starters, played really well,” he commented.

7
best real madrid goalkeepers

Since its foundation in 1902, Real Madrid has been home to some of the best goalkeepers in football history. Some of them have left their mark on the game for their quality and other became the fans favourites for other reasons.

Here at Real Madrid News we have made our own list with the nine footballers every old Los Blancos fan would remember when asked to name the best Real Madrid goalkeepers of all time.

Some might disagree in the order, but it is highly unlikely that you will disagree in the number. Anyway, check out our top 9 and leave your comments behind to let us know your views:

9. Mariano Garcia-Remon

Considered as one of the most complete Spanish goalkeepers of the 70’s, Mariano Garcia-Remon is one of the big names of Real Madrid history. He was a member of the squad for 15 years, and later he would hold different positions as manager in the youth categories and even in the first team –for just three months. He joined Real at 15-years-old and would make his professional debut for Los Merengues in 1971. He had superb reflexes, but suffered terrible injury problems that prevented him from playing regularly. However, he would go on to make 231 official appearances for his life-club before retiring in 1986. He won seven leagues, four Spanish cups and two UEFA Cups.

8. Jose Banon

Banon was Real Madrid’s starting goalkeeper during the decade of the 40’s. Those were tough years for Los Blancos, due to the recent Spanish Civil War, but Banon clearly stood out as one of the best players of the team. He played 160 official games for Los Merengues, from 1943 to 1949. He is remembered as a very agile keeper and a great athlete who could jump from one post to the other. However, he had to retire at 27 years old due to a lung problem. He won two cups and one Zamora Trophy as the best goalkeeper of the 1946 league.

7. Bodo Illgner

Illgner will be always remembered by Los Blancos fans as the goalkeeper of the long-awaited ‘Septima’, the seventh European Cup that Real pursued for 32 years until they managed to lift it in 1998. The Germany international arrived at Madrid in 1996 and Fabio Capello trusted him to become the undisputed starting goalkeeper, sending Paco Buyo and Santiago Canizares to the bench. He played 107 games for the Whites, conquering two Champions Leagues, two leagues and one Intercontinental Cup. With Germany, he won the World Cup in 1990. After suffering several injuries and seeing Iker Casillas take his seat, Illgner decided to retire in 2001.

6. Juanito Alonso

Alonso was the usual starting goalkeeper during the most successful years of the club. He played he first game for Real in 1928 and went on to play for eleven consecutive seasons. Alongside Alfredo di Stefano and Paco Gento, he won five European Cups, five leagues, one Intercontinental Cup and one Zamora Trophy. He is remembered as a simple goalkeeper, who would do the job efficiently but without adornments. Every season president Santiago Bernabeu would sign a famous goalkeeper, and every season Alonso ended up earning himself the starting goalkeeper role. Like Banon, he had to retire in 1960 due to a lungs problem, having played 225 games for Los Blancos.

5. Antonio Rodrigo Betancort

antonio-rodrigo-betancortNicknamed ‘Siete Manos’ (Seven Hands) for his good reflexes and agility, Betancort was the goalkeeper of the late 60s. He made his debut in 1963 and soon became the undisputed starter. He still holds the record of least goals conceded in a season: 15 in 1966-67. Betancort’s worst day at Real Madrid was the final of the European Cup of 1966, when he missed the game due to an injury he had suffered in the semi-final. He was never able to succeed at the national team since he always had Spain’s legend Iribar ahead of him. He retired in 1971, having won six leagues, one European Cup, two Spanish cups and two Zamora Trophies for Los Merengues.

4. Miguel Angel Gonzalez

Miguel Angel played at the Santiago Bernabeu during the 70s and the early 80s. He made his debut in 1969 and played 346 for Los Merengues. He is the third stopper to have made the most appearances for the club. He was a keeper of great ability and elasticity, in fact, they used to call him ‘El Gato’ (The Cat). The fans consider him one of the greatest legends of the club, although not always was he the guaranteed starting goalkeeper. Miguel Angel alternated on goal with Mariano Garcia Remon for a long time and that competency benefited both of them. He played his last game on 1985, although he remained a member of the squad until 1986. He won eight leagues, five Spanish Cups, two UEFA Cups and one Zamora trophy. He has remained an employee of the club since he retired, holding different positions.

3. Paco Buyo

When Miguel Angel retired, Real needed a world-class goalkeeper to replace him, and president Ramon Mendoza chose Francisco ‘Paco’ Buyo, who had spent seven successful seasons at Sevilla. Buyo made his debut in 1986 and he would wear Los Blancos number 1 shirt for ten years. His great qualities as a goalkeeper and his deep love for the club quickly made him one of the fans favourites. He was a player of exceptional leadership skills, a stopper of superb reflexes and an athlete of impressive strength. He played 454 official games for Los Blancos, conquering five league titles, two Copa del Rey titles, five Spanish Supercups and two Zamora trophies.

2. Ricardo Zamora

ricardo zamoraConsidered by many as the best goalkeeper of the 20th Century, Zamora is an all-time legend of Real Madrid and the Spanish national team. He made his debut for Los Blancos in 1930 and went on to make 152 appearances. He was one of the forefathers of modern goalkeeping: He was the first one to wear gloves and invented the elbow stop to prevent injuries in the hands. Zamora played his last game for Los Merengues in the Copa del Rey final of 1936, leading Real to a 2-1 victory over Barcelona. He won five Spanish cups, two leagues and a silver Olympic medal with Spain. The award for the best stopper in La Liga is named in his honour.

1. Iker Casillas

iker-casillas-50‘El Santo’ (The Saint) won IFFHS’ World’s Best Goalkeeper of the Year award in five consecutive occasions, from 2008 to 2012, more than any other goalie in history. No wonder why many consider him the best stopper to have ever played the game. Luckily for Real Madrid, such a rare talent grew up in Los Blancos youth system and he would play for the first team during 25 successful years. He arrived at the club at nine years old and made his professional debut in 1999 at 17. He’s the Spanish player with more caps for the national team and the second in Real Madrid history with more appearances: 725, only 16 less than Raul. He is arguably the goalkeeper with best reflexes ever, and it cannot be said he is the perfect goalkeeper just because he always struggled with high crosses. He has won five leagues, two Copa del Rey, four Spanish Supercups, three Champions Leagues, two European Supercups, one Intercontinental Cup, one World Cup and two European Championships. Despite having move to Porto to end his career, he can still extend this endless list of honors that no other goalkeeper can match.

Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez says he is delighted with his team’s performance after their goalless draw with PSG.

Los Blancos remain unbeaten the Champions League and will now look forward to the return match at the Santiago Bernabeu in two weeks time.

The 10-time winners had more of the possession in Paris and the better chances to win the game despite the fact they were robbed of a number of first team stars through injury such as Gareth Bale and Karim Benzema.

Speaking to reporters afterwards, Benitez gave his assessment of events in the French capital.

“I was certain the team would do well because I get to see them working on a daily basis. We had more chances to win, quite a bit more control over the game than PSG and more shots on goal than them. To have put them under pressure as we did, given all the injuries we had to deal with, means I’ll be leaving here a very happy man,” he said.

And he added: “It’s difficult to say if this was our best match of the season so far because we’ve played some good games. The intensity was relentless for the full 90 minutes and we maintained our tempo with and without the ball. Keeping your tempo is what matters at this level. I can’t take anything away from the team’s performance. Given the circumstances, we played an exceptional game.”

Sergio Ramos

Real Madrid remain at the top of Group A after earning a goalless draw against Paris Saint-Germain in the French capital. Both teams have seven points, but Los Blancos goal average is better.

Both teams focussed more on defending than attacking, and that made the game a bit boring, with very few scoring chances.

Los Merengues were in control of possession from the start, but they failed to seriously threaten Kevin Trapp. Jese Rodriguez had the first opportunity to score as he received a pass from Toni Kroos, but the keeper denied his low effort.

Rafa Benitez men exerted a high pressure on their rival trying to steal the ball near their opponents’ box. In one of those occasions, Trapp denied Cristiano Ronaldo twice in the same play to save his team.

Right after the break, Edison Cavani could have made it 1-0 for PSG as he met a cross from Thiago Motta, but his effort just moved wide of the post.

With 15 minutes to go, Ronaldo was close to earning Madrid the three points as he received a pass from Marcelo inside the box but his effort from a wide angle just whistled wide.

Those were the only two serious chances of the second half, as both teams seemed to content themselves with a draw that leaves them both tied at the top of the group.
