Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa has commended his team mates for their performance against Malmo in the Champions League.

Los Blancos won 2-0 in Sweden, Ronaldo netting both the goals as he became the club’s all-time leading scorer.

Elsewhere though, it was another clean sheet for the team, meaning Athletic Bilbao are the only team to have scored against them still this season in eight games overall.

Talking to reporters afterwards, the veteran defender said he was happy to feature and was please with the focus of the team.

“We knew that on their home ground they were a dangerous oufit who are physically strong and play with a lot of intensity. We worked hard and put in a focused display, and we’re really happy with the three points. They defended well and looked to make the most of their counter-attacks. In the first half we were really in control, we got the goal and after that the second half was more open,” he stated.

The obvious talking point of the evening was Ronaldo’s record, and Arbeloa joined the many praising the striker.

“We’re really happy about Cristiano’s achievement. It’s incredible. I think that no-one could have thought that he or any other player could achieve such figures; he’s become a Real Madrid legend. You feel like the sky’s the limit for him. I hope he carries on like this, we owe him a lot. We have to do everything we can to make sure he feels comfortable, and get the most out of him with our style of play,” he said.

Cristiano Ronaldo says he wants to keep scoring goals for Real Madrid and setting new records.

The Los Blancos striker became the club’s all-time leading scorer on Wednesday night, his two goals against Malmo taking him to 324 in 308 appearances – one goal ahead of previous record-holder Raul.

He also equaled Raul’s record of netting 66 goals in the Champions League for the club and extending his lead over Leo Messi as the competition’s leading scorer in all time with 82 – five ahead of his rival at Barcelona.

Speaking after the game, the Portugal international said he was delighted to achieve teh new record as he has always wanted to do so with Real Madrid. He added that it won’t stop now and he wants to continue scoring goals and setting new boundaries.

“I’m very happy, this is a special moment. I’d like to thank my team-mates for helping me reach this number. Breaking this record at the best club in the world is a real honour for me. It’s what I wanted, but what matters most is that the team won and that we’re top of the group. It’s not easy. The first time I put on the Real Madrid jersey I thought about one day becoming the top goalscorer. This is a special moment but I still want to score more goals,” he commented.

Speaking about Raul, Ronaldo said he holds the legendary striker in high regard.

“He is a person I deeply admire. He sent me a message after the match to congratulate me. I’m delighted and I’m certain Raúl is happy too because he sincerely told me that me break the record was a wonderful moment,” he stated.

Real Madrid boss paid tribute to star striker Cristiano Ronaldo after the Portuguese broke Raul’s goalscoring record for the club.

The 30-year-old netted twice in the 2-0 Champions League win over Malmo on Wednesday evening taking him to 324 goals for Los Blancos – one ahead of Raul’s previous record. Ronaldo needed just 308 games to reach that remarkable figure compared to Raul’s 741.

Speaking to reporters after the game, much of Benitez’ comments surrounded the three-time World Player of the Year, but he also paid tribute to his team for getting an important job done.

“I’ve already said that he is an indisputable player for us and he’s shown that yet again. I’m very satisfied because we won, didn’t concede any goals, picked up three points and Cristiano scored twice to break the record. If we’re talking about the history of Real Madrid and the club’s goalscorers, it’s worth pointing out that he has needed less time to achieve this feat and that makes what he’s doing all the more remarkable,” he commented.

And he added he was pleased with an improved performance: “We played slightly better than we did against Málaga. We had more than 70% possession. We managers are eternally dissatisfied and we’re always looking to cut out mistakes and improve things. Their two or three threats on goal came from mistakes and through us not playing the easy ball. I’m very pleased with the team, but it’s my responsibility to try and improve things.”

Cristiano Ronaldo drew level with Raul Gonzalez as the joint-top scorer in Real Madrid’s history thanks to a brace against Malmoe that gave Los Blancos a 0-2 win. The visitors had plenty of chances, but they couldn’t seal the victory until the last minute.

Rafa Benitez men lead their group of the Champions League tied with Paris Saint-Germain with six points. They will visit the French capital in the next date of the competition.

Los Blancos were well on top from the start, seeing plenty of the ball deep inside the hosts’ half. However, Malmoe had the first two shots on target, but Keylor Navas was brilliant to deny both.

Ronaldo threatened Malmoe twice in the 15-minute mark, but both times Wiland saved his team from receiving an early goal.

However, the stopper was unable to prevent the Portuguese from opening the score after 29 minutes. Isco picked the ball up inside the opposition half and slid a fantastic ball through to Ronaldo. The 30-year-old fired a strike into the corner to make it 0-1.

Right before the break, Carvajal came close to increasing the lead as he latched onto a loose header inside the box and fired a superb volley that came crashing back off the woodwork.

In the second half, Real exerted a higher pressure seeking to score a second goal. Kovacic send a low effort wide of the post and Benzema’s shot deflected off a defender and went out.

Malmoe were down to ten men as Yotun was shown a second yellow card for bringing down Lucas Vazquez and was sent off by the referee.

Ronaldo took advantage of it and sealed the victory right before stoppage time easily slotting in a cross from Casemiro.

Nacho Fernandez says the Real Madrid players are aware that Malmo are a strong team at home and they will need to put in a performances to get a result.

This season’s Champions League has already thrown up some surprising results, with Arsenal losing at both Dinamo Zagreb and at home to Olympiakos when there were considered favourites, while Chelsea lost at Porto and Manchester United lost to PSV Eindhoven.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, the defender said the Real players are taking the game seriously and know the Swedish outfit will give their all when they take on the 10-time winners of the competition.

“The team are really looking forward to the match, and are out to play well and come away with the three points. We expect to come up against a very tough side; we know that they’re strong at home. We’ll try to play our game and control the match, without losing sight of the threat they pose up front and how tough they are,” he commented.

And he told reporters Los Blancos are aware of a few players to look out for.

“From Malmö I know [Markus] Rosenberg, who played for Racing Santander and likes to score a lot of goals. Also [Jo Inge] Berget, who is really quick. We know that they’re a good side and that they dominate their games at home. I don’t follow the Swedish league, but we know that they’re a difficult team and that they aren’t going to make life easy for us.”

Real Madrid travel to Malmo this evening looking to continue their good start to the Champions League.

The 10-time winners of the competition defeated Shakhtar Donesk 4-0 in their opening group stage game and will be overwhelming favourites when they take on the Swedish team.

Rafa Benitez’ men remain unbeaten in all competitions so far this campaign with five wins and two draws. Defensively, they have looked solid having conceded just once in that time. While criticism has been leveled at the team for failing to score against Malaga at the weekend, they are La Liga’s second highest scoring team with 14 goals this term.

The hosts face a monumental task tonight but are in good form. Coming into the game, they have won the last three in the Swedish league. They will also draw confidence from having knocked out Celtic in the qualifying rounds.

In terms of team news, it is much the same for Real, with Gareth Bale, Danilo and James Rodriguez all still out. Pepe and Ramos remain on the sidelines so Raphael Varane and Nacho Fernandez will feature at centre back.

Malmo are missing first choice keeper Zlatan Azinovic with a knee injury while Rasmus Bengtsson and Guillermo Molins are doubts.

Possible Line Ups:
Malmo: Wiland; Tinnerholm, Bengtsson, Arnason, Carvalho, Yotun; Lewicki, Adu, Berget; Djurdjic, Rosenberg Real Madrid: Navas; Carvajal, Varane, Nacho, Marcelo; Kroos, Modric; Isco, Kovacic, Ronaldo; Benzema

Rafa Benitez says he wants his Real Madrid players to share the goals more between them and not rely so much on Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Los Blancos drew a blank in their last game – a disappointing draw at home to Malaga. They also failed to score against Sporting Gijon on the opening day of the season.

And Ronaldo, despite scoring eight goals this season, has been getting criticism from some quarters as his goals have all come in just two games this term.

Speaking to the media ahead of the Champions League tie against Malmo, Benitez said he wants more players to get on the score sheet.

“The key the other day was our effectiveness with the final pass, which is the most difficult thing. Anxiety in the final minutes, too. We lacked the composure to carve out better chances. What we have to do is instil confidence in the players up front. I’ve set [Karim] Benzema a target and with Cristiano there’s no need, because he’s always there and we all know his quality. We have to improve the tallies of the players coming from deeper so as not to have to rely so much on Cristiano and Benzema,” he stated.

And he added: “It’s easier to improve the backline than the forward line. Scoring goals is the hardest thing to do; it’s harder to coach it. Showing that level of precision depends a lot on the player. In defence, movements and aspects of play that become second nature can be worked on more effectively.”

Former Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes says current Los Blancos star Cristiano Ronaldo will silence his critics soon and will be back with a bang.

The 30-year-old has experienced somewhat of an unusual start to the season this term. Although he has scored eight times already, all of his goals have come in just two games.

Earlier this month he netted five goals against Espanyol in La Liga and followed that up with a hat trick against Shakhtar Donesk on match day one of the Champions League.

Having drawn blanks in the rest of his games, it has led to some in the media to suggest the Portugal international is past his peak and his influence on the game is starting to diminsh.

But speaking to reporters, Morientes rubbished those claims, saying Ronaldo will be back to his goalscoring and devastating best soon.

He stated: “Everybody should leave Cristiano alone. We’re talking about a special player who after scoring 2 goals still isn’t satisfied. Cristiano does not need that criticism, or be above it. When we least expect it he’ll be back on track.”

And he continued: “Cristiano is used to shutting other people’s mouths. He’ll be back in to his usual (scoring) routine.”

Malmo captain Markus Rosenberg has praised Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo ahead of the teams’ showdown in the Champions League, saying he will be more difficult to face than Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

The Swedish outfit came up against the former Barcelona and Inter Milan striker on match day one of this season’s competition and he had plenty of chances throughout the game.

But speaking to the media ahead of Real’s visit, Rosenberg said coming up against Ronaldo posed an even bigger threat because of the 30-year-old’s speed and strength.

Ronaldo has netted eight times in all competitions for his club this season. However, those goals have come in just two games – he scored five against Espanyol and followed that up with a hat trick against Shakhtar Donesk.

Rosenberg stated:”Together with Messi, Ronaldo and Ibrahimovic are the three best in the world. They have their differences, but I think maybe Cristiano is the most difficult to stop for us.

“He plays at an incredible speed. If you look at the PSG match from the first round, Zlatan had a lot of chances, but I think Cristiano will give us more problems. Ronaldo is probably worth 92 Rosenbergs, at least that much. If we’re talking about wages, then probably even more. If we’re talking about speed, not so much. But seriously, he’s a fantastic player, he’s scored 300-odd goals for Madrid. He’s an incredible forward.”
