Asier Illarramendi has rejected a move from Real Madrid to Liverpool, according to reports.

The midfielder has had a frustrating career at Los Blancos since joining two years ago having failed to gain a regular first team spot at the Santiago Bernabeu.

It had lead to rumours Illarramendi would look to continue his career elsewhere, with Premier League sides Liverpool and Arsenal interested in his services. The Reds were particularly keen and some media outlets reported earlier in the summer that they were willing to pay 20 million euros to secure his services.

But according to Madrid-based daily, Marca, new boss Rafa Benitez rates the central midfielder highly and can fulfill his potential at the club. When he first joined, Illarramendi was seen as the long term replacement for Xabi Alonso.

The paper says Illarra has been impressed by Benitez and is receptive to his methods. As such, he as turned down a move to Anfield to focus on establishing himself under the new regime at the 10-time Champions League winners. He will likely reassess his situation at the end of the upcoming campaign.

The Basque midfielder has been injured recently and didn’t take part in the tour to Australia or China but is expected to be fit for the Audi Cup next week in Munich.

Daniel Carvajal says the Real Madrid players have their intensity back in their game after a long break and are ready for the new season.

Los Blancos have played three pre-season games so far and looked impressive in their last outing against Inter Milan as they ran out 3-0 winners.

With the La Liga season drawing closer, Carvajal said the players are nearing their physical peak and the right levels of intensity – something that will come across in their remaining pre-season games.

Ahead of the match against AC Milan in China, the right back stated: “The preseason is helping us to get our intensity back after long holidays. We have improved and we hope to end this mini-tour playing well and we aim to beat Milan in order to be in top form and get the three points in our first La Liga game.”

Asked once again by journalists about the competition for places in the side, Carvajal said he is delighted with the arrival of Danilo, adding it will help improve his game too.

“The competition with Danilo is very good and benefits Real Madrid. He is a great player, if he wasn’t, he woudn’t be at the best club in the world. Any coach would want to have two good players in each role and the problem of who to pick for each game,” he commented.

Jose Mourinho has hit out at the wife of Rafa Benitez saying she should look after her husband’s diet more closely.

The Portuguese showed once again his insecure nature and inability to deal with any sort of humour after Montserrat Seara had joked in a Spanish paper earlier this week that Benitez and Mourinho have shared the same clubs in their managerial careers because her husband needs to clean up after the Portuguese has left.

She then went on to say on a serious note that the reason they have been at the same clubs – Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid – is because there are very few top-class clubs in the world.

Never one to hide his nasty side, Mourinho hit back, taking aim at the new Real manager’s wife, saying she should look after her husband’s diet rather than talk about the Chelsea boss.

He also said Benitez had destroyed the Inter Milan team he had built, forgetting to mention his own managerial failures such as failing to win the Champions League while at Real Madrid.

“The lady is a bit confused. I am not laughing. Her husband went to Chelsea to replace Roberto Di Matteo and he went to Real Madrid and replaced Carlo Ancelotti. The only club where her husband replaced me was at Inter Milan, where in six months he destroyed the best team in Europe at the time,” he said.

Not exactly a stunner himself, the Chelsea boss then took aim at the Real manager’s weight.

“For her also to think about me and to speak about me, I think she needs to occupy her time, and if she takes care of her husband’s diet she will have less time to speak about me,” he garbled.

Spanish promising defender Jesus Vallejo is close to reaching a deal with Real Madrid, Spanish digital newspaper Libertad Digital has reported.

The news of Los Blancos interest in signing the 18-year-old Zaragoza man were spread a few days ago and it seems like negotiations are going fast.

Vallejo has made a great impact this season at second division side Zaragoza, becoming one of the youngest captains in all big European leagues.

He has also been the captain of the Spanish Under-19 national team that has recently conquered the European Championship in Greece.

Libertad Digital reports that Los Merengues are willing to pay the player’s six-million-euro buy-out clause, although they wouldn’t bring him this season. Vallejo would stay one more year at his hometown club and the deal would also include Los Blancos youngster Borja Garcia loan to Zaragoza.

Spanish radio station Cadena SER has also reported that Vallejo’s agent has admitted the deal is almost closed. “It isn’t closed yet because the boy is on holidays. When he gets back on Monday we will resume negotiations,” he has reportedly admitted.

Real Madrid are working hard to sign all the rising stars in European football. In the past months, they have signed Martin Odegaard and Marco Asensio, and now they are about to land Lin Liangming and Vallejo.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has taken a pop at Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo by claiming Eden Hazard had a better season than him last year.

The Blues won the title ahead of Manchester City, with Hazard playing a key role. Ronaldo, meanwhile, was part of a Madrid side that started the season strongly, winning the European Super Cup and World Club Cup, but faded at the end and missed out on both the Champions League and La Liga.

On a personal level, Ronaldo netted a career best 61 goals for his club last season. Hazard scored 19 goals in all competitions – just two more than Gareth Bale – the much criticised Welsh forward.

But speaking to the Guardian, Mourinho said team honours were the most important factor, meaning Hazard was better than the Portuguese forward overall.

“Cristiano third best? I think so. I don’t like players or managers to win individual trophies without the team. Last season, yes. In spite of the fact that Ronaldo was fantastic. He was fantastic. He scored an incredible number of goals. I am not saying he is not fantastic. I am just saying that, in my personal view, every football player in the world should understand that a team has to be in front and no titles [are important],” he commented.

Real Madrid midfielder Casemiro has said he is determined to succeed at the club following his return from Porto.

The 23-year-old spent last campaign on loan at the Estadio Dragao and was a key part of the team during his time there. He made 28 appearances in the league, scoring three goals along the way.

Now back in the Spanish capital, the Brazilian is trying to force his way into Rafa Benitez’ plans and told Madrid-based daily Marca he is ready now as his year away allowed him to grow up and mature as a person and footballer.

“I’m more of a man today than I was when I left Madrid. I grew a lot at Porto but my excitement about playing for Real Madrid hasn’t changed,” he commented.

And he added: “I’m as hungry as ever to triumph at this club and I’ll work to make that happen. I’ve come here to work hard and I want to play an important role. We have a lot of quality and competition in the middle of the park and that can only be good for the team.”

Casemiro initally joined Real on loan in January 2013 and made the move permanent six months later.

Real Madrid forward Jese Rodriguez has said he’s never entertained the idea of leaving the club.

The forward made a name for himself two seasons ago when he netted eight goals in 31 appearances for Los Blancos. His excellent form even lead to some to say he should be called up for Spain’s World Cup squad that summer. But a knee injury cut short his season and he spent nine months on the sidelines.

Last season was a frustrating one for Jese as he found it tough to make an impression under former boss Carlo Ancelotti once he was fully fit again. And that lead to talk the striker may be heading for an exit – with Villarreal and Everton both mentioned as potential destinations.

New Real boss Rafa Benitez has told the 24-year-old he is part of his plans this season though, something that gives Jese plenty of confidence.

After scoring in the 3-0 win over Inter Milan, the striker said: “I feel good. I feel better as time goes by and by playing getting playing time. I’m working hard and we’re all doing well as a group. I never wanted to leave. This club has given me so much and I now have the confidence of the new coach. We’ll fight on.”

The wife of Real Madrid boss Rafa Benitez has joked that her husband spends his career clearing up the mess left by Jose Mourinho.

The new Real boss has now been at three clubs after the Portuguese, having also been at Inter Milan and Chelsea following Mourinho’s departures. Carlo Ancelotti succeeded Mourinho directly at the Santiago Bernabeu but was fired for failing to win La Liga or the Champions League last season.

Speaking to La Razon, Montserrat Seara said Benitez just goes round clearing up the destruction following Mourinho. She then added on a serious note it is unsurprising they pair have shared so many clubs as there are very few world-class clubs out there.

“We tidy up his messes. If you think about it, of course you end up crossing paths. There are only a few world-class clubs out there.”

She then went on to add that Benitez find it hard to switch off from the game and is always thinking about football.

“On our first date, Rafa explained to me what a 4-4-2 was. He finds it hard to stay away from the game. The year we spent at home he helped coach the local school team. It was hilarious. He stood on the sidelines and shouted at them as if they were first division players, waving his arms about. He doesn’t see football as work, it’s his passion,” she commented.

Cristiano Ronaldo has been named as one of the candidates to receive UEFA’s Best Goal of the Season Award.

The goal the Portuguese scored against Liverpool in the group stage of the Champions League has been selected as one of the ten best of the season.

Ronaldo opened the scored in Real Madrid’s 0-3 victory at Anfield Road with a superb flick, following a brilliant collective play.

That night, the Los Blancos forward confessed he was very happy to have scored that goal: “This is a very important victory. I had never scored here. I’m not surprised that they gave me an ovation, they have always had special affection for me. This was a perfect night.”

UEFA Football Committee and the UEFA Technical Observers have also selected goals from Vasyl Kobin (Shakhtar Donetsk), Aaron Ramsey (Arsenal), Neymar (Barcelona), Leo Messi (Barcelona), Erik Lamela (Tottenham), Vitorino Antunes (Dinamo Kiev), Robbie Muirhead (Scotland), Mariam Abdulai Toloba (Belgium) and Erik De Bruyne (Wolfsburg).

Ronaldo already won this award last season. He could now win it two years in a row. The voting is already opened in uefa.com so all football fans can vote their favourite. The winner will be announced on August 25th.

Real Madrid defender Pepe says Sergio Ramos loves the club and he doesn’t think he will leave.

Ramos has been strongly linked with a move to Manchester United all summer with stories of the Premier League side prepared to pay up to 50 million euros for the 29-year-old.

It is thought the World Cup winner is unhappy with Real president Florentino Perez for refusing to put him in the top pay bracket at the Santiago Bernabeu in discussions over a new contract. Ramos still has two years on his current deal with the 10-time Champions League winners.

Speaking at a press conference in China, where Real are preparing to face Inter Milan, Pepe said: “He looks fine to me. Him not being here is something that doesn’t enter any Madridista’s head. He’s our captain and I’m sure that he’s going to stay here because he really loves this club and the club loves him. I hope he stays, because he’s a leader at Real Madrid.”

The Portuguese only has one more year to run on his deal too but said it is in the hands of his agent and the club.

He commented: “I’m very happy playing and training at this club each and every day. My contract renewal is a matter for my agent and the president. I have to do my job well throughout the year and I hope that all together we can win many trophies this season”.
