Schalke 04 Real Madrid betting preview

Cristiano Ronaldo is back for Real Madrid tonight as Los Blancos travel to Germany to take on Bundesliga outfit Schalke in the first-leg of their last 16 tie.

The 29-year-old’s presence in the side will be a huge boost for Madrid, as will the return of the BBC front three for the first time in a month – with Carlo Ancelotti confirming Gareth Bale will start ahead of Jese too.

Los Blancos actually have a woeful record on German soil. In 25 matches played in the country, they’ve won just once and lost 18 times. But the bookies don’t seem to worry about that record with Madrid backed at 4/9 to win in Gelschenkirchen.

The hosts have some dangerous players – Julian Draxler and former Real forward Klaas-Jan Huntelaar in their ranks – but are still considered outsiders for the match at 4/11. A draw is offered at 7/2 by the bookies.

Madrid come into the game on a great run of form – 26 matches unbeaten since their 2-1 reverse to Barcelona back in October. The Champions League is also a competition they regularly find the net in, and have scored in their last 21 away matches.  Cristiano Ronaldo is the favourite to grab the opening goal tonight, but those who fancy a punt may consider putting money on Karim Benzema.

The Frenchman is enjoying a prolific campaign to date, and also has an excellent record in Europe’s top club competition with 33 goals in 58 games. At evens to get on the scoresheet at any point, he may be worth backing.

Winning a tenth European Cup, La Decima, is an obsession for Real Madrid, according to boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Los Blancos take on Bundesliga side Schalke on Wednesday night in the first leg of their last-16 clash. And the Italian manager says he wants his team to finish the season strongly and lift the club’s 10th European crown.

Madrid head to Germany on a 26-game unbeaten run in all competitions, but with a terrible record on German soil – just one win in 25 matches, and none in their last 10 visits.

But Madrid won’t focus on that record, Ancelotti told Canal Plus. He says that after a slow start to the season by their standards, Los Blancos are right on track to end the campaign on a high.

“We have worked for seven months to build a good solid base. We have built the house, now we have to decorate it. You cannot live in a house without anything inside, and we hope to decorate it well,” he said.

Despite denials from some quarters saying it’s an obsession, Ancelotti freely admitted winning the 10th European Cup for the club is his aim. “We want to play the final of the Champions League. Obsession? ‘La Decima’ is a word you can hear again and again, it is a big motivation for everyone.”

If Real Madrid was able to pick a country to never visit in a European competition, that would certainly be Germany. Los Blancos have historically suffered every time they have travelled there.

The latest precedent was last year, when Madrid visited Dortmund twice in the Champions League and lost both games, first in the group stage, before a humiliating 4-1 defeat in the semi-final first-leg. That was nothing strange for Los Merengues, since they have only earned one victory in the 25 matches they have played in Germany. The have lost on 18 ocassions, while drawing the other six matches.

That sole Los Blancos’ win on German soil took place on September 27th 2000, when they beat Bayer Leverkusen 2-3 in the third matchday of the group stage of the Champions League. The Madridistas’ goals were scored by Guti and Roberto Carlos, who netted two.

Carlo Ancelotti’s starting goalkeeper for the Champions League, Iker Casillas, was among the players who played that night. Thus, he knows better than anyone that winning in Germany is not completely impossible for Real Madrid as Los Blancos pay a visit to Schalke 04 in the first leg of this season’s Last-16 round.

Real Madrid legend Raul has hailed Cristiano Ronaldo as the outstanding player in world football and warned his former team Schalke that they are in for a tough task on Wednesday night.

The 36-year-old, who spent 16 years at the Santiago Bernabeu before making a switch to the Bundesliga, said Ronaldo’s goal scoring feats and consistency mean he is the world’s best.

Speaking to Schalke’s official website, he said: “Cristiano Ronaldo is without question the best player at the moment. He is currently experiencing the strongest phase of his career. His achievements and his consistency stand out.”

The former Spain forward, who now plys his trade in Qatar, also had special words of praise for Xabi Alonso and Sergio Ramos. “Xabi Alonso is also extremely important for the team. He is the puppet master in midfield, a kind of conductor. But there are also many other great personalities such as Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos,” he stated.

When asked what Schalke have to do to beat the nine-time European Cup winners, Raul said each player must give 120%.

“I believe that Schalke has to play beyond its limits in both games. Each player on the pitch needs to be at 120% and play at their full potential. And that little bit of luck of course will help.”

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has piled the pressure on his former club by claiming Real Madrid are favourites to lift the Champions League trophy this season.

The 30-year-old Holland striker, who spent six months at the Santiago Bernabeu, comes up against his old side on Wednesday night when Los Blancos travel to Germany to take on Schalke in the first-leg of their last-16 tie.

Speaking to Marca, Huntelaar, who scored eight times in his short time in the Spanish capital, said Schalke would come out fighting, despite being underdogs.

“We play the first leg at home and we are going to come out fighting but, that said, Madrid are clearly the favourites to win the round and the Champions League. Our best weapon is our attacking play. We can score a goal at any point during a match and we are always a threat up front,” he stated.

He also added that the Bundesliga side could take some confidence from Madrid´s terrible record on German soil. Los Blancos have won just once in their last 25 visits to Germany – a 3-2 win over Bayer Leverkusen in the 2000/01 tournament. Their last visit to the country was a nightmare – Jose Mourinho and his men coming back with their tails between their legs following a 4-1 thumping at the hands of eventual finalist Borussia Dortmund in last season’s competition.

Huntelaar added: “Their nightmare in Germany is a good sign but we will see what happens – after all this is football.”

It’s the turn of Real Madrid in the Champions League tonight and Los Blancos will be looking to make it three wins out of three for Spanish teams after Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid won their first-leg matches last week.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men travel to Raul’s old club, Schalke, in Germany tonight. The nine-time winners of the European Cup have a terrible record in Germany, winning just once in 25 games, and scoring only 23 goals while conceding 60.

AS has an interview with former Real left back Roberto Carlos, who says the team did not enjoy their matches in Germany.

He revealed he played their four times with Madrid, and the team played with so much intensity and concentration, wanting to end the woeful record, that in the end they didn’t enjoy playing there.

The good news for Madrid fans is the return of the BBC. In his press conference on Tuesday, Ancelotti revealed Gareth Bale will play ahead of Jese, while Cristiano Ronaldo returns to the fray having sat out the last La Liga fixtures.

The 29-year-old will be hungry to return, and will also be seeking to overtake Zlatan Ibrahimovic as this season’s top scorer in the competition. Currently, the Swedish striker has 10 goals to his name, while the recently-named Ballon d’Or winner has nine goals in his five matches.

Spain’s Supreme Court has ordered French newspaper Le Monde to pay a 300,000 euros fine to Real Madrid for linking the club to doping doctor Eufemiano Fuentes.

The Paris-based daily published an article in December 2006, associating Los Blancos and Barcelona with the notorious doctor. Le Monde claimed it had seen Fuentes notes over “preparation plans” for both clubs.

This article was published after Fuentes had been found guilty and sent to jail for being the organiser of a doping network and practising illegal medicine. The Operacion Puerto affected several cycling teams, but only Fuentes and fitness coach Jose Ignacio Labarta were condemned.

Le Monde has been also fined to pay Barcelona 15,000 euros for the same reason. The newspaper had been previously found guilty by a Spanish provincial court, but they appealed to the Supreme Court, who has confirmed the sentence.

Real Madrid and Barcelona had asked for the same compensation for the damages to their image. However, the Catalans will receive less due to a technical mistake in its complaint.

The French daily has revealed they are not willing to compensate Spanish football giants and they will appeal again, this time to the Constitutional Court of Spain, the highest legal institution in Spain.

Le Monde’s spokesman Stephane Mandard has stated the Supreme Court’s will is “to kill the investigation press.” However, neither he nor his colleagues have shown a single proof that would actually link Madrid and Barca with Eufemiano Fuentes.

If the Constitutional Court reasserted the Supreme’s Court decision, Le Monde would still be able to appeal to the Court of Justice of the European Union, what seems very unlikely.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has said the headline he wants to read on May 25 is that Real Madrid have completed the treble.

Los Blancos take on Schalke in the first-leg of their last-16 tie on Wednesday, and although the World Cup winner admitted the German outfit will prove to be a tough opponent, he is confident the team can make it all the way to the final in Lisbon on May 24 and win the club’s 10th European crown.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men are top of La Liga, and take on Barcelona in the final of the Copa del Rey in April, and Casillas says he wants to complete a trophy haul this year.

Speaking in an interview with Bwin, the 32-year-old stated: “I’d like the last piece of news for this season to say that Real Madrid had won the treble. We know it is difficult because there are other teams that also want to win titles. But we are where we want to be right now, which is fighting in all three competitions.”

He also picked out former teammate Klaas Jan Huntelaar as a dangerous weapon in Schalke’s attack, but insisted Real Madrid have enough quality in defence to cope.

“They have one player, Huntelaar, who recently recovered from a serious injury, and I think they are dangerous rivals. We are solid in attack, with decisive players who are in good form and that has to be our style: to maintain the defensive line with the help of the rest of the team, while trying to score a goal ourselves in every chance that we get,” he said.

Pedro Mosquera. Joselu. Antonio Adan. They all fall under one category. Alvaro Negredo. Roberto Soldado. Juan Mata. Borja Velero. These players fall under the other category.

The former group has fallen under the radar and play for small teams such as Getafe and Hoffenheim while the latter group has made it big and play for heavyweights such as the Manchester clubs and Tottenham. But they all have one thing in common: They are products of the youth academy ‘La Fabricia’, Real Madrid’s equivalent of Barcelona’s
famous ‘La Masia’.

Over the last decade, Madrid has spent over a billion dollars on transfers. Under Florentino Perez, youth players have not been given a chance. Intense pressure for titles and the influx of new superstars every year has meant that coaches are not willing to risk games by giving inexpereinced youth a chance. Perez initially meant for his Galacticos project to be termed as ‘ Zindanes y Pavones’, a reference to the superstar Zinedine Zidane and the youth team player Francisco Pavon playing alongisde another symbolizing the union of the homegrown players and the galacticos. But it was just not feasible to play players of such differing quality and experience alongisde one another and soon the’ Pavones ‘ part of the plan was discarded.

Madrid is a club that prides itself on its foriegn stars as well its homegrown players. La Quinta del Buitre consisting of 5 homegrown players: Emilio Butragueno, Manolo Sanchis, Martin Vazquez, Michel and Miguel Pardeza was the core of the team that completely dominated Spanish football in the 1980’s. Fans who know about Madrid’s history yearn for more homegrown players to be incorporated into the team and this desire is further strengthened by the fact that most of Barcelona’s dominating team consists of youth players.

Iker Casillas is the only cantero to break into the first team on a permanent basis after the rise of Guti and Raul. Until last season, he was the only cantero in the first team. Enter Jese Rodriguez.

Born in the Canary Islands, Jese was picked up by La Fabricia when he was 14 years old and playing for Hurucan. He went on to make 80 appearances for Real Madrid B scoring 32 goals and thereby surpassing Butragueno’s record of 21 goals for Castilla. Jese has always been marked for great things. He made his first team debut under Jose Mourinho against SD Ponferradina in the Copa Del Rey and his first La Liga appearance against Real Sociedad.

However, in the 2012-2013 season, Jese was a victim of power polictics and a fued between Mourinho and Castilla coach Alberto Toril. Many feared that the lack of playing time and his isolation from the first team would lead him to move away from Madrid to further his career.

However, with the coming of Ancelotti and Zidane, Jese has begun to truly rise to the occasion. With 8 goals and 4 assists aldready this season, expectations in the capital are sky-rocketing. Like many other great players, he took the oppurtunity provided to him by Bale’s consecutive injuries and Ronaldo’s suspension to establish himself in the first team and show his importance to Ancelotti.

Jese’s rise is remarkable and has brought a great deal of joy to Madridistas but at the same time is a bit unsurpirsing. He has always shown his flair and skill at all levels for Spain and Madrid and therefore his talent was never in question. But talent is not enough to rise up at Real. Juan Mata was Chelsea’s best player for the previous 2 seasons and is now an integral part of Manchester United’s side. But he was unable to establish himself at Madrid. It takes a combination of luck, talent and hardwork and being oppurtunistic. Jese has showed that he has it all. And it doesnt hurt to score your first goal against Barcelona at the Camp Nou.

There are so many aspects of his mentaltity and his game which are admirable. Firstly, he has extremely good technical skills. His acceleration and pace are impressive and in full flight it is easy to mistake him for Ronaldo. He has that unique sharp turn of pace and cuts in from the right or left very well. His finishing and vision are good as well although there is room for improvement.

Personally, I believe his mentality is his strongest aspect. The Bernebeu and the first team are extremely intimidating. It is often hard to settle down in a dressing room with so many large personalities and egos. Players like Micheal Owen and Nicholas Anelka who are surpemely talented and superstars in their own right were unable to adjust in Madrid due to the nature of the dressing room. Jese however seems unaffected by these issues. He has said the right things and done the right things. He has expressed his admiration for Ronaldo who is his role model and is liked by important figures in the dressing room such as Ramos and Casillas. Zidane has taken him under his wing. The support of such important figures for a young player is integral to his development. He has shown composure in big matches. His goals have come against big clubs such as Bilbao, Barcelona, Atletico and Valencia.

Jese’s rise poses three important questions. Firstly, who should play after Ronaldo returns from his ban: Bale or Jese? There is a sporting and political aspect to this question. Jese is in arguably better form but Bale cannot be said to be in bad form either. He had no pre-season and multiple muscle niggles have restricted him from fully returning to full form. There is no doubt that he will be a success at Madrid but Ancelotti needs to decide whether to play Jese while he is in his purple patch and slowly return Bale to the team or whether to fully integrate Bale in the team and restrict Jese to subsitute appearances.

The political aspect is that Perez fears Bale being seen as an extremely expensive failure. The media and the public are extremely quick to condemn players as failures and draw comparisons to Kaka. Public opinion among Madrid fans seems to be that Jese seems to deserve a place in the side on merit and that would send the correct message to the other players: Hardwork and good performances are rewarded and acknowleged by the coach.

The second question is what does this mean for future castilla players? Does Jese’s rise mean that Ancelotti and Perez will now remake thier transfer stratgey in order to give youth players more importance ? La Fabricia definetly produces top quality players. These players should be given more oppurtunities. The club spends years nuturing them and it makes more sense to give them a chance instead of shelling out millions on another player.

The third question is the future of Alvaro Morata which hangs in balanace. At the start of the season, he seemed to be in favour. Benzema was in bad form and the fans clamoured for Morata. It seems now that the best option would be to loan him out to a big club in order for him to get some much needed experience in the same mould as Lukaku. Arsenal, Spurs and Juventus all had rumoured interest in him. Selling a talent like him would be a mistake. I would prefer him as the second striker as compared to a 50 million Falcao or Cavani.

A word on Madrid in 2014. So far, Madrid has only conceded 1 goal and that was in a 1-1 draw to Bilbao, which is also incindentally the only match they have failed to win this year. The defence which was leaky at the start of the year has really tightened up and is further strengthened by the return of Varane. Modric, Alonso and Di Maria in the midfield 3 exhibit great balance and Benzema upfront is arguably in his best form since coming to Madrid. The business end of the competition has started now. Hala Madrid. Here is to La Decima.

Juventus star Paul Pogba would be welcomed at Real Madrid insists Raphael Varane should the Turin giants be willing to sell.

The Frenchmen has really flourished since leaving Manchester United in 2012 with Paris Saint-Germain and his former employers interested in signing him.

“I have no information about any move,” Varane told French football programme Telefoot. “But personally, if it happens, I’d be very happy. I would love to play with him, but it’s not my decision obviously.”

The 20-year-old is considered a very promising young player alongside his French counterpart who both made their international debuts last March against Georgia.

Varane recently made his comeback in the first team at Real Madrid following two long-term injuries. After making a sensational debut season at the Santiago Bernabeu, he missed the latter stages of last season’s campaign in which Los Blancos fell at the semi-final stage of the Champions League and lost the Copa del Rey final.

He made his comeback in October, but picked up a knee injury while on international duty with France as Les Bleus saw off Ukraine in the World Cup play-offs last November.
