Madrid press report 8-1-14

Madrid sports newspapers put their focus today on the controversy surrounding Angel di Maria, after the Argentinian grabbed his crotch as he was booed by fans on Monday at the Santiago Bernabeu.

“Di Maria defends himself,” As titles. The Madrid daily highlights on its front page the winger’s words in yesterday’s press conference.

“I feel like I’m constantly required to clarify things; when others make a gesture nobody ask them, but if it’s me there’s controversy,” he said. “If someone felt bad, I apologyse,” he added.

Marca emphasizes “Di Maria defends his version” over the gesture being just a coincidence. “However, the club has opened proceedings,” they report.

Spain’s most sold newspaper also claims that Xabi Alonso is having trouble with his eardrum complaint. “The noise in the stadiums makes him dizzy,” Marca states.

In other news, the Madrid daily reports “Liverpool also want to sign Alvaro Morata.” Marca points out “Real won’t negotiate.”

Xabi Alonso is hoping to aid Real Madrid in their pursuit of silverware this year and also stressed he has always felt loved at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 32-year-old’s return from injury has brought about a change in form for Los Blancos as the midfield general demonstrated his true importance to the side.

“What I want most in 2014 is to win titles with Real Madrid. That’s the biggest thing on my mind,” Alonso told El Mundo Deportivo.

Real Madrid currently sit third in La Liga with 41 points from 17 games, with both the Champions League and the Copa del Rey up for grabs as well.

“Playing for Madrid is a very intense experience, for the good things and the bad things,” the former Liverpool midfielder continued.

“There’s a lot of pressure and responsibility. You have to be very aware of your surroundings. Fortunately, I have always felt loved by the club and fans.”

The midfielder’s current deal with Madrid is due to expire at the end of the season with seemingly no resolution in sight.

Manchester United may be able to acquire Real Madrid full-back Fabio Coentrao at a discounted price, according to new reports.

The Daily Mirror reported Saturday that Coentrao’s agent Jorge Mendes was in talks with United boss David Moyes about a possible transfer for £12 million, or about €14.45 million.

The Portuguese left-back almost moved to Old Trafford on the transfer deadline day in September, but the move fell through, and rumours suggest he is keen to leave in the winter window.

He has also been linked with Tottenham Hotspur, though United are more likely suitors as Moyes’s pursuit of Leighton Baines continues to stutter.

The Mirror further reported that Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti gave Coentrao permission to leave in order to seek more first-team action ahead of the 2014 World Cup. Coentrao has made only five appearances for Los Blancos in all competitions in the 2013-14 season.

He plays an important role in Portugal’s squad and helped them secure a place in Brazil along with fellow Madrid stars Cristiano Ronaldo and Pepe.

Some believed Coentrao would stay at the Bernabeu after signing a contract extension through 2018 in November, but Spanish outlet AS reported on Dec. 30 that Madrid officials extended his contract in order to receive a greater transfer fee.

The 25-year-old defender has struggled for a consistent starting spot since arriving at Madrid from Benfica in 2011. Brazilian fullback Marcelo won the favour of former manager Jose Mourinho and has continued to remain first choice under Ancelotti.

Accidentaly or not, Angel di Maria touched his testicles when he was booed by the Santiago Bernabeu crowd as he was substituted against Celta Vigo. The image is very clear.

We’ll never know whether he did it on purpose or his private parts were actually itching; only he knows. The Argentinian has stated it was a coincidence, and Carlo Ancelotti has excused him saying “we all make mistakes.”

I personally think Di Maria’s gesture was intentional. Of course, that behaviour was totally inappropriate. But, as Ancelotti said, it was one mistake. Florentino Perez should be more worried about Santiago Bernabeu fans behaviour, because it is also inappropriate and it happens game after game.

Bernabeu’s crowd is one of the most disrespectful in international football. Would you imagine Old Trafford fans booing Alex Ferguson? Totally insane right? Well, at the former Chamartin, Vicente del Bosque has been jeered at after a 1-5 loss against Zaragoza, Carlo Ancelotti was booed after just two months in charge and even Raul Gonzalez received some whistles in his last years at Real.

Spanish football fans, and especially those from Madrid, crossed the line between being critical and being disrespectful a long time ago. They can glorify a player one week –as it happened with Di Maria at the start of the season– and crucify him the following just because he had a bad day at work. I’m sure they would change their behaviour if a group of people came into their offices to jeer at them every time they have a bad day in their jobs.

Bernabeu’s case is the clearest example that good manners have been totally lost in football. Fans think they can behave the way the want just because they have paid their ticket. Would you imagine people booing and throwing bottles at the end of a theatre play? Well, maybe in the 15th century, but nowadays, even if you’ve paid your ticket and you didn’t like the show, you clap politely or simply stand up and leave. You can later give your opinion and recommend people not to pay for it, but you’ve never think of humiliating the actors just because you didn’t like their work.

Sport is just another spectacle, like theatre or cinema. But for whatever strange reason, some of them, such as football, have turned into a place for fans to vent their frustrations and anger.

A month ago Bernabeu’s victim was Benzema, now it’s Di Maria, and next month it will probably be Pepe. As I said, the Argentinian’s behaviour was wrong, but it has happened once in his career. Sadly, people will possibly remember this more than all his sacrifice and effort in his years at Madrid.

If Real Madrid want to become the great and solemn club they have always claimed to be, they should start teaching Bernabeu’s crowd some respect. Florentino Perez has made a good start by kicking the Ultras Sur out, but there’s also a little radical fan inside many people not sitting on the south stands. They could certainly use a good manners lesson.

Carlo Ancelotti has said that winning the match against Celta Vigo at the Santiago Bernabeu on Monday evening was the most important thing as Los Blancos look to keep apace with leaders Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid.

In their first match of 2014, Los Blancos began slowly, but eventually ran out 3-0 winners thanks to a goal from Karim Benzema and two from Cristiano Ronaldo, his 399th and 400th career goals.

Speaking at his press conference after the match, the Italian boss admitted his team wasn’t up to speed and will need to improve in coming matches if they are to catch the leaders and remain in the hunt for the La Liga crown. Barcelona and Atletico both have 49 points from their 18 matches so far, with Real five points behind on 44.

Ancelotti said: “The play was not that good in the first half, it was a little slow. After Christmas and the holidays it is normal for a team not to play with a lot of intensity. The most important thing was to win the match and we won well, especially with more intensity in the second half.

“The match showed that we had problems in defence and we need to improve the balance. But, to win the league, it is better to do it when you’re up to speed. We are five points behind and we have to try to make them up by playing better”.

Cristiano Ronaldo dedicated his two goals against Celta Vigo to Portugal legend Eusebio, who passed away at the age of 71 on Sunday.

The former Benfica player is considered to be one of the greatest players to have ever played the game, and was top scorer in the 1966 World Cup in England. He had suffered health issues for a number of years and died from a heart attack at the weekend.

His funeral was held on Monday afternoon, with thousands of mourners turning out at the Estadio de Luz in Portugal to pay respects to their hero.

Hours later, Ronaldo scored two goals against Celta Vigo as Los Blancos won 3-0 to keep up the pressure on La Liga leaders Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid. Speaking to reporters after the game, Ronaldo said although he was delighted with the win, his thoughts were very much elsewhere. And he dedicated his goals to his hero.

“I appreciate the tribute that the stadium and Spain have paid to him. To feel the warmth of Spain and the rest of the world is very important. I was very close to him and he helped me a lot. He is a legend for me and today is a sad day, and obviously, the goals were for him,” the 28-year-old said.

Madrid sports daily As reports today that Cristiano Ronaldo scored his 400th goal with his brace against Celta Vigo. “Jese opened the door and Cristiano honoured Eusebio,” the Spanish newspaper titles.

Los Blancos earned a hard-fought 0-3 win over Celta, scoring three goals after youngster Jese Rodriguez came in from the bench.

Spain’s most sold newspaper, Marca, emphasizes this fact in their main headline: “Addicted to Jese.”

“The youngster came in at 61 minutes and completely changed a Real that had been dominated by Celta until then,” Marca points out.

“CR7 completed his tribute to Eusebio and closed the game with two goals,” they add. “He recovers the first position in the Golden Boot race.”

Both newspapers report Angel di Maria made a controversial gesture when he was booed by the Santiago Bernabeu fans. The Argentinian touched his testicles, but he claimed “I did nothing against the crowd.”

Asked about this matter, Carlo Ancelotti said: “I didn’t see it. He could have made a mistake, but who doesn’t?”

Real Madrid assistant manager Zinedine Zidane has said he could never have done the same role when Jose Mourinho was in charge at the Santiago Bernabeu because the pair did not have a strong enough relationship.

The France and Los Blancos legend, now 41, became assistant to Carlo Ancelotti when the Italian arrived in the summer and works alongside Englishman Paul Clement. And Zidane says the trio work well together in the dug out and preparing the team for their matches.

Zidane previously held the role of sporting director when Mourinho was in charge at the La Liga giants.

Speaking to Canal+, Zidane stated: “With [Carlo] Ancelotti, it’s all happened quite naturally. I spoke with him by phone a few days before he joined and we sorted everything out. That was a good moment for me, for him and for the club.

“I wouldn’t have been able to take on that role with a coach I didn’t know. I could never have been Mourinho’s assistant for example. And besides, he already had an assistant. It wouldn’t have been right to take on the job of being his right-hand man.”

The Portuguese boss, now back at Chelsea, was at Madrid for three years. Despite winning La Liga once and the Copa del Rey, he failed to lead the club to their coveted tenth Champions League title. His last year in particular was a volatile one in which there was much infighting at the club and he fell out with a number of senior players.

Youngster Jese Rodriguez continued his excellent form to lead Real Madrid’s reaction when he came in for Isco in the 60th minute.

The 20-year-old brought light out of darkness and assisted Karim Benzema to give Los Blancos a hard-fought victory against Celta Vigo that keeps Real five points behind Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

Cristiano Ronaldo sealed the win with a late brace, despite Celta played a brilliant game and had enough chances to equalise or even get the three points.

In fact, Luis Enrique men should have seen themselves ahead when Charles latched onto a long ball and tried to guide a shot inside the near post. However, Diego Lopez made a superb save and denied the Brazilian’s effort.

Borja Oubina was also close to scoring in a corner kick. The ball was allowed to bounce and made it way through Celta’s midfielder at the back post. However, he sent his header high over the bar.

Los Merengues didn’t even shoot on target in the first half, with Celta having the best chances, especially through Rafinha.

Carlo Ancelotti’s men improved in the second half, with Isco and Luka Modric taking control of the game. However, their best chance was a tame effort by Isco that Yoel claimed.

However, everything changed when Jese and Gareth Bale came in. The Canary Islands-born received a cross from the Welshman and brilliantly assisted Benzema to make it 1-0.

Celta could have equalised in a free kick that Nolito fired over the bar.

Ronaldo made it 2-0 in a counter-attack on 82 minutes, and he scored his second in stoppage time after a fantastic play by Bale.

German side Borussia Dortmund have told Real Madrid target Ilkay Gundogan to make up his mind over a new contract.

The 23-year-old has a deal that runs until 2015 with Jurgen Klopp’s side but the Bundesliga side and last season’s Champions League runners-up are keen to tie him down on longer contract and fend off any admirers for his signature.

Gundogan has long been linked with a move to the Santiago Bernabeu to add to Real’s central midfield options, and is seen by many in the Spanish capital as being a long-term replacement for Xabi Alonso. Other sides mentioned as possible destinations should Gundogan decide to leave include Premier League outfits Arsenal and Chelsea.

Speaking to Kicker magazine, Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc said he didn’t like giving anyone ultimatums, but he was keen for the club to find out whether the Germany international intends on staying at the Westfalenstadion. “Our top priority is to find out if there is a willingness to prolong the contract,” he stated.

Should Gundogan decide he does not want to prolong his stay at Dortmund, the club would likely look to cash in on him rather than letting him run down his deal before leaving on a free. Polish striker, and one-time Real Madrid target, Robert Lewandowski this week announced his decision to leave the club and sign for Pep Guardiola’s Bayern Munich when his contract ends in June.
