Real Madrid press report 15-11-13

Madrid sports newspapers claim FIFA has offended Cristiano Ronaldo one more time -after president Joseph Blatter mocked him in an interview- in the players profile page of the Ballon d’Or candidates.

“FIFA undervalues Ronaldo,” titles As, pointing out “they favour Leo Messi and Frank Ribery in the Ballon d’Or profiles.”

Marca adds that “FIFA reminds statistics from 2012 that favour Messi and put Ronaldo down.” Spain’s most sold newspaper highlights “Ribery sees himself as the winner.”

Marca’s main focus in their front page is the crucial game that Ronaldo will play today with Portugal to qualify for the World Cup. “CR7 challenge,” they title.

“First leg of the wonderful duel with Zlatan Ibrahimovic to earn a ticket for Brazil,” they add. Portugal and Sweden will meet in Lisbon in their last chance to qualify for the tournament.

Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso will be returning to the starting lineup of the Spanish national squad in a friendly match against Equatorial Guinea, as revealed last week by La Roja coach, Vicente Del Bosque.

The 31-year-old Basque has not played for Spain since last March, due to pubalgia, a condition of chronic groin pain which he finally had surgery on at the end of last season.

After recovering over the summer, and not participating with La Roja in the Confederations Cup, shortly before the start of the season he fractured the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. He returned to playing with Real Madrid this month and played a crucial role in Los Blancos’ wins against Rayo Vallecano and Real Sociedad.

Xabi’s midfield contributions in the past two La Liga games have revitalised Real Madrid’s playmaking capabilities, and fans are expecting to see a similar effect on the Spain squad, with his return alongside Busquets, in what many consider to be among the world’s best midfield pairings. Alonso has been a key player for Del Bosque and, as was the case for Real Madrid during his absence, Spain suffered both defensively and offensively without him in its anticlimatic Confederations Cup performance, particularly in the 0-0 draw against Italy in the semifinals, and the 3-0 defeat against Brazil in the final.

At a recent press conference, the ten-year-veteran of La Roja (having debuted internationally in April 2003) commented on his upcoming return to the national side: “I am really looking forward to be back playing for Spain.” Alonso, who has scored 15 goals in his 107 appearances for Spain, added: “I want to enjoy a productive season and, hopefully, be at Brazil 2014. I wasn’t able to take part in the Confederations Cup and watching it from afar was quite frustrating for me.”

Saturday’s match will be the first in La Roja’s two-stage “African tour”, and will be followed by another friendly against South Africa in Johannesburg’s Soccer City stadium, which has become sacred ground for Spain, after the World Cup title it won there three summers ago.

The game against Equatorial Guinea, which will be played in the capital city of Malabo, has been the object of controversy beyond the world of football. The African nation has been living under a dictatorial regime since Teodoro Obiang’s 1979 coup d’etat. Critics of the choice of venue (which was actually the third option for the Spanish Football Federation, after negotiations with Gabon and Angola fell through) have commented on the possibility of Obiang’s government trying to use the match as a way of improving its image. The Spanish Football Federation claims it has had no contact with the dictator and that there are no events planned with the regime.

As a curious coincidence, Xabi Alonso’s last game with La Roja was the Brazil 2014 qualifier against France in Paris last March (which Spain won 0-1, with a goal by Pedro), when the Spanish squad, for the first and only time so far in its history, sported an all-red uniform (as opposed to the usual blue shorts). Saturday’s match in Malabo will be the official debut of the all-red uniform as Spain’s regular kit, which it will wear as the defending champion in next summer’s World Cup.

Real Madrid and Brazil legend Roberto Carlos has backed Cristiano Ronaldo to win this year’s Ballon d’Or award.

With the award coming early in the new year, much debate is going on in the media as to who should win. The favourites for the prize are Lionel Messi, who has won the award for the last four years running, Franck Ribery, who helped Bayern Munich lift the historic treble last season, and Ronaldo.

The Portuguese has started the season in fine form, and has netted 16 times in 13 La Liga games already. In the calendar year, he has scored 62 goals for club and country.

Speaking to Voetball Primeur, Robert Carlos, who has forged a successful coaching career in Turkey with Sivasspor, said the 28-year-old Ronaldo deserved to win the award this year for his goalscoring exploits.

“Cristiano Ronaldo deserves to win the Ballon d’Or,” he said, before adding “And I think he is finally going to win. Ronaldo shows himself to be a huge goal machine, it is unbelievable. He deserves to win this year and I think he will.”

Roberto Carlos spent 11 years at the Santiago Bernabeu, playing 512 games and scoring 66 goals. In his time at the club he won La Liga on four occasions, and the Champions League three times. He also lifted the Spanish Supercopa three times, the Intercontinental Cup twice and the UEFA Super Cup once.

Real Madrid are the highest scorers when playing at home across the big five European leagues so far this season.

In their seven league matches to date at the iconic Santiago Bernabeu, Los Blancos have scored 23 goals against visiting opposition. In the past two matches alone, they have netted 12 – seven against Sevilla and five against Real Sociedad.

On average, Carlo Ancelotti’s men score just over three goals a game at home in La Liga, just ahead of rivals Barcelona, and Champions League runners’ up Borussia Dortmund – both of which have scored 21 goals in their league matches at home.

Los Merengues started their home campaign with a 2-1 win over Real Betis. Other wins have followed against Athletic Bilbao (3-1), Getafe (4-1) and Malaga (2-0). They have failed to score infront of their own support on one occasion; a painful 1-0 defeat at the hands of city rivals Atletico de Madrid – their first loss in La Liga against them since 1999.

Bayer Leverkusen, Borussia Mönchengladbach and Manchester City also appear on the list of high scoring teams when at home, with 20 goals each apiece.

Renowned Spanish sports journalist Josep Pedrerol has claimed Xabi Alonso first option if  he doesn’t renew his contract with Real Madrid this season would be moving to the United States to play in the Major League Soccer.

The director of late night sports show Punto Pelota stated “Alonso has not decided about his future yet, although there have been meetings between his manager Inaki Ibanez and the club.”

“If Alonso finds himself perfectly fit in two months, they will start seriously negotiating a contract renewal. If he has to choose a top European team, it will be Real Madrid, otherwise he plans on starting an adventure in the USA,” he added.

Pedrerol claimed Real Madrid would offer Alonso “a one-year renewal, or even two depending on his performances and how the midfielder feels about his groin injury.”

“The club wants Alonso to stay, but they would understand an possible exit if a team like Monaco came and offered him a lot of money,” the journalist concluded.

The Basque midfielder has been linked with a possible exit to a number of European sides, including Liverpool, Chelsea, Fiorentina, Juventus and Milan. However, this is the first time he’s been linked with a MLS switch.

Cristiano Ronaldo is the best player in the world at the moment, according to Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger.

In a question and answer session on Twitter, the Arsenal manager was asked who he considers to be the top player right now. And the Frenchman, who recently celebrated 17 years as boss of the north London side, said 28-year-old Ronaldo is the hottest property in world football – ahead of Barcelona forward Lionel Messi.

The Portuguese scored a hat trick at the weekend against Real Sociedad to take his La Liga tally to 16 already this season. It was his 23rd treble in a Real Madrid shirt, and astonishingly, he has scored 226 goals in 216 games for Los Blancos since his arrival at the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer of 2009.

Ronaldo and Messu are on the shortlist of players nominated for the Ballon D’Or award. Along with Bayern Munich’s Franck Ribery, the great rivals are considered among the favourites for the gong, which Messi has won for the last four consecutive years.

When asked who was the best player, Wenger said: “It’s difficult, Messi was on top until now but in the last year maybe Ronaldo is in front, he is very athletic.”

There are no La Liga games this week and that means Madrid sports newspapers have to come up with senseless front pages due to the lack of Real Madrid news.

Marca’s main headline today is “The professor is back,” in a reference to Xabi Alonso -who had probably never been called a professor before- returning to Spanish national team to play two friendlies against Equatorial Guinea and South Africa.

“He will take Spain’s lead,” they claim. “Alonso has changed Real’s image and he returns to bring some consistency to La Roja,” they add.

The other main Madrid sports daily highlights in its front page the fact that Cristiano Ronaldo would win the Golden Boot if the season ended now; a very “clever” approach taking in account that we have barely had two months of competition.

“Cristiano Golden Boot,” As titles, pointing out “he leads Europe’s top goal scorers list over Valskis and Diego Costa.”

On other news, Marca also publishes a picture of former Real Madrid defender and assistant coach Aitor Karanka in his unveiling as Middlesbrough manager. “Welcome Aitor,” they title.

Ramires has stated that he is content playing with his club, Chelsea, as a midfielder and rejected the Real Madrid transfer rumours.

Some media outlets have claimed ex-Blues coach Carlo Ancelotti is preparing a raid on his former club for one of the English team’s most consistent players.

Real have been keeping tabs on the 26-year-old, who arrived at the Stamford Bridge club three years ago and has appeared in over 150 games.

The Brazilian star is under a contract with the Blues club. He declared that the decision to sell him is up to Chelsea not his inclination to leave.

Ramires confessed to Sambafoot: “I see the interest of Real Madrid as recognition of my good work in Europe, but I’m under contract with Chelsea and it would be unethical of me to comment. For the moment, these are only rumours.

He then added, “I am very happy here. I am respected and part of the club’s history. If I leave, Chelsea would have to make the decision. Chelsea are one of the biggest clubs in the world and I have realised my dream here.”

Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho claims Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo is the “most professional” player in football and that he took advantage of his stardom.

When interviewed by France Football, the former Los Blancos said: “there is no other player more professional. Being at a club with Cristiano Ronaldo is the best thing to have happened to me.

“Why? Because if I let him pass ahead of me he would be mobbed immediately, and I would be free to pass by in no hurry.”

Mourinho worked with his compatriot for three years, winning the Spanish League title and the Copa del Rey before returning to Stamford Bridge last summer.

The former Manchester United star is one of the favourites to land the 2013 Fifa Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded in January.

So far this season Cristiano Ronaldo has been in sensational form at club level, scoring 24 goals and providing seven assists in 17 matches.

The 28-year-old will be hoping to continue that excellent run into Portugal’s World Cup qualification play-off against Sweden, the first leg to be played in Lisbon on Friday.

Mesut Ozil gossip

When Real Madrid sold Mesut Ozil to Arsenal last summer on a 50-million-euro deal, rumours suggested one of the reasons why Los Blancos directors made that decision was the German’s controversial love of the city’s nightlife.

The playmaker’s passion for partying was confirmed a few days ago, when he was caught leaving a London nightclub after his current team had lost to Manchester United in the Premier League.

The Daily Express has published photos of Ozil at the exit of Boujis club, climbing into a car in an early hour of Monday morning.

The 25-year-old had been criticized for his poor performance that day against United, but that didn’t stop him from going out for a night of fun until late.

Many Arsenal fans have been very disappointed after seeing the pictures of their star. Arsene Wenger surely won’t be pleased either. On the other hand, Florentino Perez and Carlo Ancelotti could find in those photos a backup for their decision of letting Ozil go.
