Real Madrid - Manchester United legends

Ruben de la Red scored a late winner for Real Madrid legends as Los Blancos secured the MU Foundation Cup by beating the Manchester United legends 2-1 at Old Trafford.

Leading 3-2 from the two sides’ encounter at the Bernabeu last year, Madrid’s superior fitness eventually told as they ran out 5-3 victors overall.

The game at Old Trafford, attended by a crowd of 60,000 spectators, was aimed at raising money for two charities – the MU Foundation and Unicef.

Madrid included a number of stars in their side including Zinedine Zidane and Luis Figo, both of whom haven’t lost their incredible first touch and wonderful close control despite their advancing years.

United included 2008 Champions League hero Edwin Van de Saar in goal, and the deadly strike force of Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke. Recently retired Paul Scholes also started for the Reds.

The first half was a fairly quiet affair on the whole, although Madrid should have had a penalty when Ronny Johnsen kicked Michel Salgado in the area. Van de Saar was the busier of the two goalkeepers and made a number of fine saves including from Zidane and Ruud Van Nistlerooy.

Fernando Morientes eventually made the breakthrough though just before the interval firing low into the bottom left corner of the goal from the edge of the area.

Van Nistlerooy switched sides at the break and wore the red of United in the second half, while Steve McManaman was introduced for Los Blancos, and in true pantomime style was jeered every time he touched the ball.

Fifteen minutes into the second half Van Nistlerooy drew United level. A nice pass from Andy Cole set the Dutch striker free from the Madrid back line and he raced into the area and finished with aplomb in front of the Stretford End.

The game looked to be heading for a draw until de la Red settled affairs. Madrid launched a counter attack and the 27-year-old midfielder, who had to retire from the game because of a heart condition, placed a wonderful chip over the advancing keeper and into the back of the net.

After the game, former United full back Dennis Irwin said he admired the way Madrid played.

Speaking to MUTV, he stated: “The quality that they had was unbelievable with players like Zidane, Figo and Hierro, some of whom haven’t been out of the game for too long. It was fantastic and keeping the ball is second nature to them, but it was a great game to play in.”

Marca puts is focus in the excellent performance by Real Madrid youngster Jese Rodriguez, who scored a Maradona-style goal in last Castilla’s game against Alcorcon.

Consequently, Perez was automatically confirmed for the job and Real Madrid official website published the following statement:

Real Madrid forward Gonzalo Higuain confirmed one of the season’s worst kept secrets last night after admitting he will leave the club.

The Argentinean striker – who scored his 121st goal for Los Blancos in the 4-2 win over Osasuna – said he wants a new challenge.

Higuain, who has been with Real Madrid for seven years, has been strongly linked with a move to Italian champions Juventus or to Premier League side Arsenal in recent weeks.

Speaking after the match, he said: “I feel that my time here has come to an end and I want a change of scenery.

“It was a decision I have been thinking about for some time. It’s tough, it wasn’t easy to make, but I will go to another club to seek new challenges. “

The main focus on the two front pages of the Madrid sports papers is Jose Mourinho’s goodbye to Real Madrid.

The Portuguese manager walked onto the pitch briefly to wave to the fans following his side’s 4-2 win over Osasuna at the Bernabeu. He then disappeared down the tunnel for the last time.

Marca says the manager’s goodbye summed up his season in general. He only waved at the Ultras in the south stand, choosing to ignore the rest – much like he has done with several players in the dressing room.

As says the manager has already agreed a deal with Chelsea and that it could be announced today.

Away from Mourinho’s departure, both papers also report on Gonzalo Higuain confirming he played his last game for Los Blancos and will look for a new challenge new season.

Finally, Marca says Florentino Perez is increasingly confident in is new model in which Zinedine Zidane will be given a key role and responsible for star signings.

Jose Mourinho ended his three-year period as Real Madrid boss with a 4-2 victory over Osasuna in the last game of this La Liga season.

The Portuguese manager was the centre of attention during the match, receiving a mixed goodbye from the crowd, with some of the fans booing and other singing his name regularly.

With Diego Lopez out due to an injury, Castilla’s goalkeeper Jesus started the game, following Mourinho’s decision of leaving Adan on the bench and Iker Casillas out of the squad.

With both teams struggling to take the initiative in the first half, Gonzalo Higuain put Los Blancos ahead in the 35th minute after receiving an excellent pass from Angel di Maria and shooting wide of the keeper.

Just three minutes later, Michael Essien scored the second. Mesut Ozil curled the ball into the box and the Ghanaian directed a perfect header inside near the post.

Real Madrid could have extended the lead early in the second half, but Osasuna’s goalkeeper Riesgo denied Ozil’s effort.

However, the visitors came back in the game with a powerful shot by Torres from 20 meters in the 52nd minute.

And 12 minutes later, Cejudo catched a wrong header by Onwu and sent the ball in from the far post and restoring parity on the game.

But it did not last long. Karim Benzema sent Los Merengues back in front after collecting a pass from Ozil, shrugging off Ruben and scoring with an excellent touch.

Osasuna tried to draw insistently but Jose Callejon sealed the victory with just three minutes remaining, finishing a counter-attack with a low shot that beat Riesgo.

Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas has been dropped from the squad altogether for the side’s final match of the season against Osasuna in what appears to be a last act of defiance by Jose Mourinho.

The outgoing manager controversially dropped the World Cup winner in January in favour of Diego Lopez – causing much anger among the fans.

With Lopez missing the final game of the campaign through injury, it was expected Mourinho would finally hand Casillas a recall.

Instead he has left him out of the squad completely, meaning 26-year-old Antonio Adan will likely start with 24-year-old B-team keeper Jesus Fernandez taking his place on the bench.

A number of other high profile players have not been named in the squad, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Fabio Coentrao, Xabi Alonso, Sami Khedira and Marcelo.

Outgoing Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has said he wishes the club is happy and successful after he leaves.

The Portuguese boss has only one game left in charge before bringing down the curtain on his three-year Real Madrid career.

Since taking the reigns at the Bernabeu, Mourinho has achieved plenty of success, including a record-breaking title success in 2012, the Copa del Rey in 2011, and the Spanish Supercopa.

He also led his side to three consecutive Champions League semi-finals but was unable to guide Los Blancos to success in the tournament.

But his time in the dugout has also been marred but high profile incidents and falling outs – even with his own players. Iker Casillas, Pepe and Sergio Ramos have all felt the wrath of their manager this season alone.

Speaking ahead of his final match in charge against Osasuna, Mourinho said: I wish everyone associated with Real Madrid much happiness in the future.

“I appreciate the support of lots of fans and respect the criticism of others. Once again, a lot of happiness to everyone and, above all, good health. Hala Madrid!”
