Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo has said his side’s win in the European Super Cup was a special moment for the club and gets the season off to the best possible start.
The Portuguese striker scored twice as Los Blancos ran out 2-0 winners against Sevilla in Cardiff to secure the first of a potential six trophies this season. Toni Kross and james Rodriguez both made their debuts in a Madrid side that looked even stronger than the one that secured the Copa del Rey and Champions League last campaign.
Speaking to journalists after the match, Ronaldo said he was delighted to win the trophy – one that was missing from his own CV.
“This is a very special moment, I didn’t have this title in my trophy cabinet. The team was great and we have started the year the best way possible, on the right foot, which is what we wanted to do in order to give ourselves confidence ahead of the rest of the season,” he told reporters.
He also assured Madridistas around the world that he is back to his best after overcoming a number of injury niggles at the end of last season.
“We won this title for the fans, they are always by our side and it is a special moment to celebrate that. I had problems at the end of the season and during the World Cup. Now I’m fine, I scored two very important goals today, I’m delighted and I’m back,” Ronaldo stated.
