Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale has said the club only has one aim this season in the Champions League – to win it.

Speaking to the press after the demolition of Schalke in the first leg of their last-16 tie, Bale said everyone in the squad is focused on lifting the trophy with the big ears in May, ensuring the club’s 10th European Cup.

The 24-year-old Welshman netted twice in the 6-1 win, his 13th and 14th goals of a very productive season since his arrival in the Spanish capital. Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed a brace on his return to the side, while the third player in the iconic BBC trio, Karim Benzema also found the back of the net twice.

Klaas Han Huntelaar scored a sensational goal for the hosts, but it was scant consolation as the Bundesliga side face elimination from the tournament, even with the second leg to come in Madrid in three weeks.

Talking to Sky after the final whistle, Bale said: “It was a great performance. We were fully prepared and ready for this match. It is a great result.
It is a team game and we work very hard for each other on the pitch. I think this is a key for this team to have improved this year.”

“We are in it to win it. We want to win every competition we play. We know it is not going to be easy, because there are many great teams fighting for it. But we will give it a try,” he added.
