Fabio Coentrao may finally join Manchester United on loan from Real Madrid this week, according to reports in the UK press.

The Daily Telegraph claimed the left-back’s agent Jorge Mendes has assured officials at the Premier League champions that he is keen on a switch to the north west of England for the remainder of the campaign.

Coentrao, who signed from Benfica for 30 million euros, was close to agreeing a deal with the Old Trafford club in August. The deal collapsed at the last minute however, when Real Madrid could not sign a replacement in time. Widespread reports said Coentrao was in floods of tears when the move failed to materialise.

United manager David Moyes has been on the look out for a left-back since he took over from Sir Alex Ferguson. The incumbent at the moment is Patrica Evra, but now into his 30’s his best days are probably behind him. Moyes’ number one target was Leighton Baines, but Everton have made it clear they will not part with the England defender.

Coentrao, 25, has been hampered by injuries this season, and has seen first team opportunities limited due to the form of Marcelo. A switch away from the Santiago Bernabeu would allow him the chance to regain form and fitness ahead of the World Cup in Brazil which starts in June.
