Former Spain and Real Madrid player Raul has told the club’s official website that it will be a special play-off for him when the team face German side Schalke, where he played for two seasons.
The Real Madrid legend and all-time club top goalscorer has told his former team that they must be wary of the opposition in the Champions League round of 16 and ensure they do not take them for granted.
The Los Blancos great had a short spell in Gelsenkirchen after departing the Spanish capital and has told Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti that the German team will “fight right to the end”.
Raul said: “It’s going to be a special for me. It’s great for Schalke and I’m really happy that my [former] team-mates and the fans will get the chance to experience this.
“Real Madrid are a better team than Schalke, although they have a good team as well, but you have to be careful with German teams because they fight right to the end.”
By the first leg of the tie, which takes places next month, Schalke will hope to be boosted by the return of Klaas Jan Huntelaar. The Dutch striker has been given the all-clear to make his comeback after a knee injury suffered early in the season.
