Fernando Torres scored one goal at the first minute of each half to bury Real Madrid hopes of turning the Copa del Rey tie around. Atletico Madrid earned a precious draw at the Santiago Bernabeu and moved into the quarter finals thanks to their victory in the home leg.

Los Blancos made two terrible mistakes at the beginning of each half which made it impossible for them to fulfil the comeback. Goals from Sergio Ramos and Cristiano Ronaldo were not sufficient.

In the first play of the match, Pepe failed to clear the ball allowing Antoine Griezmann to control it and assist Torres, who finished beautifully into the top corner. At that moment, Los Blancos needed to score four goals to qualify for the next round.

The Santiago Bernabeu fans got discouraged with the goal, but their players reacted courageously, exerting a high pressure on their rival. Los Merengues threatened Jan Oblak constantly from that moment until the end of the first half.

The Slovenian goalkeeper denied Gareth Bale in the first serious chance for the home side, but he failed horribly in the next one. Toni Kroos sent a free kick into the box, Oblak fell as he rushed off his line and Ramos headed into an empty net.

There was no more attacking from Diego Simeone men in the first half, as they were all locked in their own third trying to stop Los Merengues.

Cristiano Ronaldo could have made it 2-1 as Oblak failed again, but Mario Suarez blocked his shot. Minutes later, another great header from the Portuguese deflected off Juanfran Torres and left wide off the post. All Real Madrid efforts were unfruitful.

Los Blancos repeated a poor start in the second half, as Ramos presented the ball to Griezmann. The Frenchman found Torres, who turned Pepe inside the box and beat Keylor Navas with a precise strike.

Ronaldo levelled a few minutes later heading a cross from Bale, but Carlo Ancelotti men were already depressed. They needed to score five goals, but they were exhausted and never believed it was possible.

The reigning champions were knocked out in the last-16 round and they keep struggling in 2015, having won one match of the four they have played.
