Liverpool have emerged as favourites to land Real Madrid winger Denis Cheryshev in the next January transfer window, according to reports.

The Russia international is not getting the expected minutes of play at the Santiago Bernabeu, and he will very likely look for a way out in Christmas if nothing changes.

Brendan Rodgers is a big fan of the 24-year-old and will try to convince him to move to Anfield Road. Valencia, Sevilla and Villarreal are also pursuing Cheryshev’s signing.

The Real Madrid home-grown midfielder made his debut for Los Merengues against Granada, playing 13 minutes in the 1-0 victory last week.

However, yesterday against Malaga, he didn’t play a single minute despite Jese Rodriguez’s injury. Benitez chose Mateo Kovacic to replace the Spaniard and that was the only substitution he made in the game.

Cheryshev impressed last year during his season on loan at Villarreal, helping the team finish sixth in La Liga and reach the Copa del Rey semi-finals. He made 33 appearances, scoring six goals and providing nine assists.

Valencia were close to landing Cheryshev in the last week of the summer transfer market, but Benitez finally decided to keep him.
