Real Madrid will fight for the La Liga title until the last match of the season. Zinedine Zidane men beat Valencia 3-2 thanks to a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo and a goal from Karim Benzema.

Atletico Madrid lost against relegated Levante, so Los Blancos moved into the second position in the table and they are now the only team that can prevent Barcelona from conquering the title.

Ronaldo made it 1-0 after 25 minutes as he received a pass from Marcelo and took one stride beyond Abdennour before flashing a superb right-footed finish into the bottom left corner.

Valencia could have levelled in a counter-attack, as Alcacer run through on goal one-on-one with Kiko Casilla. However, the Spanish striker opted to pass sideways for Cancelo, but the defender sent his effort over the bar.

Los Blancos doubled their lead right before the brake after Diego Alves made an unbelievable save to deny Benzema. However, the ball came back into the feet of the striker, who sent it into the bottom corner.

The visitors hit the bar at the start of the second half as Parejo hit a spectacular free-kick up, but the ball just didn’t dip enough and hit the woodwork.

Rodrigo shortened Real’s lead as he picked up a loose ball and fired a brilliant strike into the top right corner.

However, Ronaldo made it 3-1 only four minutes later in a counter-attack. The Portugal international received a pass from James Rodriguez and sent a strike into the roof of the net.

Valencia scored with ten minutes to go as Andre Gomes received the ball from Parejo and sent a stunning shot high into the top corner.

However, two minutes later, Rodrigo was shown a red card and that ended Valencia’s hopes of levelling.

Former Real Madrid boss Jose Mourinho says Alvaro Arbeloa is not just a player but a good friend as the defender prepares to say goodbye to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The right back joined Los Blancos in 2009 and played for three years under Mourinho, winning the Copa del Rey and La Liga in their time together.

The ex-Spain international has not has his contract renewed at the club and could make a farewell appearance this afternoon against Valencia – the club’s last home game of the season.

Writing about the right back in an open letter in Marca, Mourinho, who is expected to take over at Manchester United this summer, said: “Arbeloa is a friend, not just a player, for me. How does a player become a friend? As an example of passion for his profession, of love for his club, of dedication to a group and its objectives, humility, and honour in the relationship with those he works with every day.”

He added: “In the history of our huge club there are many of the best players in the world. Arbeloa doesn’t have a high profile, but he is certainly one who has given Real Madrid, its fans, Coaches and his teammates all he had.

“I have only words of thanks. In my 16 years of coaching he is surely on the podium of the most important players with whom I have worked. A good player and an exceptional man.”

Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane says his players need to keep their great run of form going for two more games if they are to win La Liga.

Los Blancos host Valencia this afternoon and will once again hope both Barcelona and Atletico de Madrid slip up as they look to overall them in one of the tightest league contests for years.

The 10-time Champions League winners have won their last 10 games in the league and French boss Zidane has called on his troops to keep the momentum going.

Speaking at his press conference ahead of the game, he stated: “We’ve won 10 La Liga games in a row and we have to keep this run going. We’ve got two games left and they are both finals. We’re still very much in the race, that’s what I am telling the team. We’ve got to believe in our chances until the end. There are two games to go, we’re behind and we must keep moving forward and doing our best to win the match, and then we’ll see what happens.”

The 1998 World Cup winner took time to praise defender Alvaro Arbeloa who looks set feature at some point in his last home game for the club with no talks planned over a new deal.

He said: “He’s an important player for Real Madrid. A special person. He’s always fought hard for the shirt and everything he’s given Madrid has been outstanding. He’s won everything in football and he’ll be with us tomorrow as he always has been. He’s very professional, committed in training, he’s always been that way. Tomorrow, we have to play first and then, if necessary, there’ll be a party for him.”

Zinedine Zidane will display an unusual lineup to face Valencia on Sunday in La Liga, as he will miss several regular starters.

Keylor Navas and Gareth Bale will miss the match through injury. The Welshman is suffering from knee problems. Meanwhile, the goalkeeper has been diagnosed with tendinitis in the achilles tendon of his left foot.

The Costa Rica international will be replaced by Kiko Casilla. Lucas Vazquez is the main candidate to replace Bale, although Jese Rodriguez and Isco could also feature.

Cristiano Ronaldo is also a doubt, as he’s been suffering muscle problems in the past few days, but he is expected to feature. Casemiro and Karim Benzema could return to the starting eleven after recovering from their injuries, although Zidane might choose not to risk them.

In defence, Danilo is expected to replace Daniel Carvajal at right-back, and Raphael Varane will most likely come in to give Pepe some rest. James Rodriguez could also feature to rest Toni Kroos.

This is Real Madrid’s projected starting eleven: Kiko Casilla; Danilo, Ramos, Varane, Nacho; Casemiro, Modric, James; Vazquez, Benzema, Cristiano.

This is Valencia’s projected starting eleven: Alves; Barragan, Mustafi, Abdennour, Siqueira; Parejo, Javi Fuego, Danilo; Rodrigo, Alcacer, Santi Mina.

Isco

Manchester United and Juventus are keen on signing Real Madrid playmaker Isco Alarcon this summer, according to reports from England and Italy.

The Spain international has lost his spot in the starting eleven since Zinedine Zidane arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu. Although he is getting minutes of action, he usually starts on the bench.

According to the latest rumours, the 24-year-old is not happy with this situation and he could consider leaving the Santiago Bernabeu should he receive an interesting offer.

Manchester United and Juventus are aware of this and might have started contacts to sign the playmaker. Italian newspaper Corriere dello Sport has revealed Juve would be ready to offer up to 40 million euros to bring the Andalusian.

The Italians are also considering a switch for Alvaro Morata. Real will have to pay 32 million euros this summer if they want to buy back the striker, and Juve could use that to cheapen Isco’s deal.

Meanwhile, British tabloid Daily Express has claimed Isco is amongst the players that Jose Mourinho has requested United to sign for next season. Yet, the Red Devils are also interested in James Rodriguez, and it seems highly unlikely that they will sign two players of such similar characteristics.

Isco has a running contract with Los Blancos until 2018, but Florentino Perez could be willing to let him go if a good offer comes.

Former Brazil and Real Madrid striker Ronaldo has hailed Zinedine Zidane for the impact he has made in such a short space of time.

The Frenchman took over Los Blancos in January following the sacking of Rafa Benitez.

Real looked down and out in La Liga with little hope of catching Barcelona or Atletico de Madrid. But having won 10 on the bounce they now sit just one point behind the top two with just two games remaining.

Zidane has also overseen Real’s march to the Champions League final where they take on city rivals Atletico de Madrid as they go for La Undecima.

Speaking to Cadena Copa, Ronaldo, who played alongside Zidane at the Santiago Bernabeu in the early 2000’s, said: “It was very important to reach the final and we are all very happy. It was very important to win.”

He added: “It’s amazing what he’s doing, Zidane. He deserves it. He has the respect of the players.”

In his four and a half seasons in the Spanish capital between 2002 and 2007, Ronaldo netted 83 goals in 127 league games. He won La Liga once as well as as the Intercontinental Cup and the Super Copa de España.

La Liga chief Javier Tebas says Atletico de Madrid are the favourites to win the Champions League against Real Madrid when the two sides meet in Milan later this month.

Diego Simeone’s side have beaten Barcelona and Bayern Munich en route to the final while Los Blancos saw off Manchester City in the semi final this week to set up a repeat of the 2014 final.

Atletico lead much of the game in Lisbon two years ago before Sergio Ramos equalised in the 93rd minute. Real ran away with it in extra time, sealing a 4-1 win on the night to secure La Decima.

Speaking to reporters, self-confessed Real fan Tebas said Atletico’s run to the final has been impressive and makes them slight favorites for the final.

“I see the final very evenly balanced. But after the semifinals, and with Atletico’s intensity, I would make them favourites,” he commented.

He also spoke about the strength of La Liga in general, with Sevilla having reached their third consecutive Europa League final. Liverpool defeated Villarreal in the other semi-final, prevented an all Spanish final in both European competitions.

“For the Spanish league it is an extraordinary success what is happening. If you balance up the financial side, and the sporting side, the Spanish league is the best in the world. Sometimes the work by club directors who must manage the finances and sign coaches and players, is not valued enough. We have been at the top level for some years now,” Tebas stated.

Real Madrid are keen on signing Chelsea keeper Thibaut Courtois and the west London side are willing to let him go in the summer, according to reports.

The Blues have failed to qualify for next season’s Champions League after a disappointing league season in which Jose Mourinho was sacked and replaced with Guus Hiddink. Current Italy boss Antonio Conte will take charge at Stamford Bridge next season and is willing to listen to offers for Courtois, the Daily Mail claims.

The paper says Courtois, a former Atletico de Madrid keeper, has fallen out with the goalkeeping coach at the club. That, combined with the lack of European football next season, has left him pondering his future in the Premier League.

Los Blancos spent much of last summer chasing another ex-Atletico shot stopper in the form of David de Gea but that deal collapsed at the last minute. While they retain an interest in de Gea, reports suggest that have switched their attention to Courtois.

Chelsea would command a huge fee for the Belgium international – in the region of 65 million euros – but with the Premier League side keen on James Rodriguez there could be room for negotiation should talks take place between the two sides.

Real Madrid have been dealt a double blow with Gareth Bale and Keylor Navas looking likely to miss this weekend’s clash with Valencia through injury.

Los Blancos host Los Che in crucial match as the look to overtake Barcelona and Atletico in La Liga. The 10-time Champions League winners are just one point behind their rivals with two games to go.

Bale, the goalscoring hero against Manchester City in the Champions League this week, has picked up a sprained knee while goalkeeper Navas has been diagnosed with Achilles tendinitis.

The club have not confirmed how long the pair will be out for and they face a race against time if they are to make if for the game against Valencia.

Bale has had an injury hit campaign but has been in great form in recent weeks. As well as netting the goal that sent his side to the Champions League final, he also netted twice against Rayo Vallecano and again against Real Sociedad.

Costa Rican shot stopper Navas has been in great form this campaign, keeping 21 clean sheets in 43 appearances.

After Valencia, Real travel to Deportivo in the final game of the league before taking on Atletico on May 28 in Milan.

Former Real Madrid player, manager and director Jorge Valdano has hailed Zinedine Zidane’s management and calming influence on the team.

The Frenchman took over the side in January when they were off the pace in the league and with plenty of reports of off-field issues and tensions within the squad.

But he had turned the season around with Los Blancos sitting just a point behind Atletico de Madrid and Barcelona with two games remaining and guided them into the Champions League final. They will face Diego Simeone’s side in Milan on May 28 in a repeat of the 2014 final.

Valdano spoke to Madrid-based sports paper AS to hail Zidane, saying: “The dressing rooms which have worked best are those which know how to manage themselves. You get the feeling that Zidane is being very intelligent, that he knows how to negotiate with the players, and listen to them. He has put in a good mood, even in press conferences.”

He added: “He does not waste words, he learned from [Carlo] Ancelotti, he can douse a controversy with just one sentence, and with a seductive half-smile, convincing and calming. That relaxed mood has been very good for Real Madrid. If the player feels listened to and accepted, his commitment multiplies.”
