Cristiano Ronaldo scored an eight-minute hat-trick in the first half as Real Madrid responded emphatically to the defeat to Barcelona by thrashing Granada at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Portuguese scored five in total, with Karim Benzema grabbing two and Bale adding another with Granada captain Diego Mainz putting into his own net in a 9-1 win.

Los Blancos had been under pressure from the media and fans alike going into the game but the win suggests the players are up for the title fight and will go all the way with Barcelona for La Liga.

The hosts welcomed back James Rodriguez to the starting line up for the first time in almost two months out with a broken toe and the fluidity and movement between him, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric was there for all to see as Real were back to their swashbuckling best.

Granada, fighting at the foot of the table, starting brightly in an open game and flashed a couple of efforts wide in the opening exchanges. At the other end, Gareth Bale went close with a header and Alvaro Arbeloa missed an open goal after getting onto the end of a perfect Marcelo cross.

But Bale calmed any nerves inside the stadium when he opened the scoring on the 25 minute mark. The Welshman had taken the brunt of fans’ anger in recent weeks and relieved the pressure on him with a clever finish. The forward ran on to Toni Kroos’ angled pass and held off defender Mainz before rounding Oler in the Granada goal to finish off from an acute angle.

From then until the break it was the Ronaldo show. The Portuguese superstar grabbed his first after Mainz had bundled clear a Benzema chest down straight to him to smash home. He grabbed his second of the game, and 32nd league goal of the season a couple of minutes later when Oier to only parry a Marcelo cross to him. And on the 38 minute mark, the Ballon d’Or holder had his third, brilliantly cutting inside and firing home an effort into the top right hand corner.

The hosts continued where they left off after the break, and Frenchman Benzema got himself on the scoresheet in the 51st minute, bringing down a Rodriguez corner on his chest before volleying home.

Two minutes later it was six for Los Blancos. Marcelo’s raking diagonal pass over the defense was controlled by Bale who drew Oier off his line. The forward then unselfishly squared the ball to his Portuguese teammate to head into the back of the net. Karim Benzema added a seventh for Carlo Ancelotti’s men in the 56th minute after collecting a pass from Arbleoa, feigning a shot to deceive the keeper and slotting him.

Granada did get themselves on the board with 16 minutes remaining when Roberto Ibanez beat the offside trap to race through and slot past Casillas in the Madrid goal. But it mattered little as minutes later, Mainz knocked it past his own keeper after failing to get out of the way of a Modric cross. Ronaldo scored his fifth in the final minute, heading home from a Modric free kick.

Ancelotti will be delighted with his players but will know they will face tougher tests as the season draws to a close.

Carlo Ancelotti believes there is everything to play for still in La Liga and the Real Madrid players will be giving their all until the very end.

Los Blancos host Granada this afternoon in the early kick off and need to respond to the damaging defeat to Barcelona last time out that saw the Catalans move four points clear at the top of the table with 10 games to go.

The Italian boss will be looking for his players to also put in a convincing display to quieten the growing noise of discontent and disapproval in recent weeks, with fans unhappy with the performances in general and with certain players such as Iker Casillas and Gareth Bale.

Speaking to the media ahead of the match, Ancelotti stated: “We’re convinced that it’s all to play for in La Liga and that we have to try to win every match we can. The team are really up for it, and the fans are too. The team are in really good shape now, fresh and up for it. We come into this period in better phsical shape than last year, as practically the whole squad is available and only Pepe has a minor problem, which he’s going to get over quickly.”

Ancelotti also went on to stated the importance of the home crowd between now and the end of the campaign and urged the fans to create a positive atmosphere.

“The fans understand that it’s an important moment and the atmosphere at the Bernabéu will help us if we play well. Our objective is to play well and repeat the good match we played against Barcelona at the Camp Nou. We showed that the team were more compact and that’s our idea of play,” he commented.

It’s a return to La Liga action this afternoon as Real Madrid take on Granada. And Los Blancos must respond following to the 2-1 loss in the Clasico two weeks ago.

Real are on a run of just one win in five in all competitions and it’s been plain for all to see what the problems have been. Gareth Bale has gone off the boil and have taken the brunt of the anger from Madrid fans, while there is ever increasing pressure on boss Carlo Ancelotti. Some expect him to be out of a job in the summer should Real fail to win either the league or Champions League.

In terms of team news, Pepe is the only significant man unavailable through injury. The Portuguese injured his groin in the game at the Camp Nou and missed his country’s games last week. Ancelotti has said he should be back in time for the quarter-final showdown with Atletico de Madrid on April 14.

Isoc misses the match through suspension but the good news for Madrid is that James Rodriguez is back in the squad following a two-month layoff with a broken toe.

Welshman Bale has already said he doesn’t need to respond to his critics but will come back to Madrid rejuvenated after netting twice in the impressive 3-0 win over Israel.

The visitors need points in the battle for survival and are about to embark on a run of five games in which they take on four teams currently placed in the top half of the league. Granada boss Resino is expected to pack his midfield this afternoon so Javi Marquez could make an appearance.

Probable Line-ups:
Real Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Marcelo, Modric, Kroos, Silva, Bale, Benzema, RonaldoGranada: Oier, Nyom, Murillo, Babin, Insua, Perez, Rico, Marquez, Bangoura, Piti, Cordoba

Cristiano Ronaldo is a one-off player in terms of quality and professionalism, according to Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti.

The Portuguese has come under fire in recent weeks for some perceived below-par performances, but his commitment and contribution to Real since he joined in 2009 can not be underestimated.

The 30-year-old Ballon d’Or holder played a key role in the success enjoyed by the club in the past year in which they won the Copa del Rey, Champions League, European Super Cup and World Club Cup. He has also helped the club to La Liga success, and set all sorts of goalscoring records along the way.

Speaking in an interview with FIFA.com. Ancelotti was asked about his star man, and responded by calling him a one-off.

A lot of people would be really surprised by him. As I’ve said many times before, he’s a player who’s a one-off in terms of professionalism and responsibility, even at this level. He was born with extraordinary talent, but he squeezes the juice from and works on that talent thanks to a level of drive I’ve seen in few other players,” he commented.

The Italian went on to add that there is very little difference between Ronaldo and Zidendine Zidane in his heyday.

“Zidane was the player I most enjoyed in training, but Ronaldo’s the one I enjoy most in matches – he scores in virtually every game!”

Alvaro Morata’s agent has told the press that Real Madrid should not bother trying to re-sign the forward this summer as he wants to develop at Juventus.

The 22-year-old only moved to Turin in August but has been linked with a move back to the Santiago Bernabeu after some fine displays in Seria A. Real Madrid are expected to be on the lookout for a forward with Javier Hernandez set to leave the club at the end of his loan deal.

Beppe Bozzo told Tuttosport that Los Blancos shouldn’t bother with his client though as he is happy in Italy.

“The situation just now is very favourable for Juve. When it comes to important players like him, we almost always have the last word, regardless of clubs or clauses. Morata is fine at Juve, he is not thinking about anything else. It all depends on what the player wants, just as it was when he decided to leave Madrid a year ago,” he stated.

And he added: “Alvaro is not a hypocrite, he says what he thinks. He will not have a foot in both camps. A few days ago he said that Juve is fine and that he isn’t thinking of returning to Madrid; he wants continue to grow with Juve. Even to me he has always expressed the same idea.

“No club, not even one as powerful as Real, can spend so much money to sign a player who does not want to move. He is already worth twice as much as Juve spent to buy him – at least €40 million.”

Former Real Madrid midfielder Xabi Alonso says he felt he needed to leave the club after they won the Champions League last year.

The now Bayern Munich man played a key role in helping Los Blancos get to the final but missed the showpiece event itself through suspension. Real ended their 12-year wait for La Decima by beating Atletico de Madrid 4-1 on a glorious night in Lisbon last May.

Alonso, who had a contract with Madrid until 2016, left the club later last summer following the arrival of Toni Kroos.

And speaking to the FIFA website, Alonso said winning the Champions League was the end of a cycle for him and he wanted to test himself elsewhere.

“After beating Atletico in the Champions League final, it seemed as though the time had come to do something different again. We had managed to win La Decima, Madrid’s long-awaited 10th European Cup, and I thought it was right to try something new with one of the world’s best teams and in one of Europe’s top leagues. I was grateful to Real Madrid for letting me go even though I had a contract that was due to run until 2016,” he stated.

Alonso could become just the second man after Clarence Seedorf to win the Champions League three times with three different clubs (he won it with Liverpool in 2005) but says he is just taking each game as it comes.

“Winning the Champions League with Bayern would be fantastic but my priority is to continue doing my job on a weekly basis and contribute to the collective success of the team in whatever way I can.”

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has said he is happy at the club and is not eying the Italy job at the moment.

Azzurri boss Antonio Conte is coming under increasing pressure and with Ancelotti stating that he’d love to manage his country one day, it has been suggested the Real manager could take up the role on a part time basis until he’s able to full time.

But in an interview with Italian TV show Grand Hotel Chiambretti, Ancelotti said he wants to focus on one thing at a time and is committed to Real Madrid.

“I don’t think it’s possible, as right now I still love what I am doing, which means working every day on the pitch. Having a part-time role wouldn’t get my enthusiasm going,” he stated.

Ancelotti was also asked about the pressure of managing the biggest club side in the world compared to his previous jobs at Chelsea, PSG and AC Milan. And he commented that whether fighting for titles or trying to avoid relegation, the pressures of being a manager are much the same everywhere.

“Real Madrid’s objectives are very clear: they give you every possibility to compete at the top level in every competition, so the objective is to win,” Ancelotti said.

“The same thing happened at Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain or Milan, because every side has its objectives and for a Coach it doesn’t matter whether the target is to avoid relegation or lift a trophy. The work doesn’t change.”

Real Madrid’s new signing Danilo will be a great asset to the club for many years, according to former left-back Roberto Carlos.

The 23-year-old Porto defender has agreed to join Los Blancos at the end of the current campaign in a 31.5 million euro deal and has signed a deal that lasts until 2021. Both Real Madrid and Porto announced the transfer earlier this week.

The Brazilian will compete with Daniel Caravajal for the right-back spot in Carlo Ancelotti’s side, and Roberto Carlos says his compatriot has all it takes to success at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Speaking to Cadena Copa, the 41-year-old said: “I follow the Portuguese league. Danilo is a very good full-back and a very good player.”

He then went on to speak about how he compares to other Brazilian full-backs, saying he is similar to Barcelona’s Dani Alves but very different to former Brazil captain Cafu.

“He is a very complete full-back because he attacks very well. Real Madrid have carried out a great signing because he has a lot of quality,” Roberto Carlos added.

The 2002 World Cup winner spent the best part of 10 years at the Santiago Bernabeu, and won La Liga and the Champions League among a host of trophies.

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa believes former boss Jose Mourinho could one day return to the Santiago Bernabeu.

The Portuguese spent three years in charge at the club, winning the Copa del Rey in 2011 and the league in 2012. But despite believing his is something special, he failed to lift the Champions League – his and the club’s main objective.

By the end of his time at the club there were plenty of stories of division in the squad. He dropped club captain and legend Iker Casillas and also had high profile falling outs with Pepe and Cristiano Ronaldo. He didn’t stop there though and also had regular run ins with opposition managers and officials.

Speaking to El Chiringuito, Arbeloa, who has been linked with a move to Chelsea to rejoin his former boss, said Mourinho could one day return to the Spanish capital.

“There is a chance that Mourinho will return to Real Madrid in the future. I do not know when, but I do believe he could return one day,” he said.

And he added: “I do not agree with those who say he divided Madrid. I am a Mourinho fan. He knows what he wants and is always straight and honest. He does not have any fear.”

The latest Real Madrid transfer news include Sergio Aguero being linked with a move to Los Blancos and Javier Pastore ruling out a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

French newspaper Le 10 Sport has claimed the Argentinian striker is Florentino Perez’s first choice to replace Chicharito Hernandez, who is set to leave the club this summer. Apparently Aguero is not happy at Manchester and he will look for a way out at the end of the season, but Los Merengues will need to bid high in order to sign him.

Another Argentinian striker who has long been linked with Los Blancos is Pastore. However, the 25-year-old has ruled out a possible move: “I still have one year remaining in my contract with Paris Saint-Germain and I’m quiet. At the end of the season we will see, but I’ll probably stay in Paris.”

Meanwhile, Spanish sports newspaper As has stated Real Madrid are closing on Valencia’s defender Jose Luis Gaya. The youngster is in talks with his club to sign a contract extension, but they are not offering what he expects and the player could have started seriously considering a move to Madrid.

Another Los Blancos target, David Alaba, has recently suffered a serious knee injury that will keep him sidelined for the next eight weeks. His Bayern Munich team-mate Juan Bernat has claimed Alaba will not leave the club: “He’s not for sale. He’s our player and has a running contract with us.”
