Real Madrid Elche match preview

Real Madrid take on Elche this evening at the Santiago Bernabeu and will look to continue their goal scoring run.

After a rocky start in La Liga in which they lost to Real Sociedad and Atletico de Madrid, Carlo Ancelotti’s men have scored 13 goals in their last two games. They defeated FC Basel 5-1 to start the defence of their Champions League trophy in style, before crushing Deportivo La Coruna at the weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti has said he still has concerns and there is plenty to work on, and in particular in defence, where Los Blancos have been leaky. In his pre-match press conference ahead of the game, the Italian admitted he would make some changes to the side, and Keylor Navas, the summer arrival from Levante, may replace Iker Casillas in goal.

With doubts over Pepe and Sergio Ramos at centre back, Nacho Fernandez and Raphael Varane may play. Further forward, Isco should come into the midfield trio, perhaps instead of James Rodriguez, while Javier Hernandez could start ahead of Karim Benzema up front after netting twice at the weekend.

One player who won’t be rested though is Cristiano Ronaldo. Fresh from scoring his 23rd hat trick for the club at the weekend, Carlo Ancelotti insists the Portuguese is back to his best and will play.

Possible line-up:
Real Madrid: Navas; Carvajal, Varane, Ramos, Coentrao; Illarramendi, Kroos, Isco; Bale, Hernández, Ronaldo.

Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has called on his players to show consistency having found their form in La Liga at the weekend.

Los Blancos take on Elche at the Santiago Bernabeu tonight coming off the back of an 8-2 win over Deportivo La Coruna at the weekend. The team has two wins and two defeats from their opening four games and Ancelotti told a press conference he wants his players to be more consistent.

“When the club, the players and the fans are untied it is much easier to fight for our goals. Last year, having those three elements united helped us to win and that is why we won. We have reacted well. Against Elche we will be tested again and I want to see consistency in our play and our results,” he told reporters.

He said despite scoring eight times on Saturday afternoon, there is still plenty of room for improvement, particularly in defence. Los Blancos have looked shaky at the back at times this season, and have conceded in every league game so far.

“The result against Deportivo was very good, but we can’t let that fool us because we still have a lot to improve in terms of our play. We had the same problem last year, but this time our attacking play has been much better. We need to improve in defence, but I think we are stronger in every aspect at the back compared to this time last year,” Ancelotti stated.

Young centre back Raphael Varane has told Spanish press that he is very happy to stay at Real Madrid, after signing a contract extension until 2020.

The Frenchman arrived at the Bernabeu at 2011 from Lens in his homeland, and has played 75 games for Los Blancos, scoring four goals.

Varane has also accrued 15 caps for the French under 21s, but has progressed to the senior squad now, having got 13 caps for Les Blues and was a first choice centre back for Didier Deschamps during the 2014 World Cup back in June.

The 21 year old said “I’m very happy to stay here. I always thought about staying at the club and this contract ensures that.

“I’ve learned a lot since I arrived when I was 18 and I want to keep doing so at this great club. I am more mature and I’ve learned a lot.”

The centre back is seen as having the potential to become one of the world’s best defenders, and the move to tie him to a new contract means that Madrid are keeping their best young talents, and Varane was delighted.

“This contract is the confidence the club has in me and I want to continue developing. It’s an honour to be here.”

Florentino Perez, Real Madrid president

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has said he is confident the current squad at the Santiago Bernabeu can lead the club to more glory.

Los Blancos enjoyed a fine season last year, securing the club’s 10th European Cup, and also picking up the Copa del Rey along the way.

Despite the signings of James Rodriguez, Toni Kroos and Javier Hernandez this summer, the European giants got off to a poor start in La Liga, losing two of their first three games. They put things right at the weekend with a huge 8-2 win over Deportivo La Coruna.

And speaking at the club’s general assembly, Perez said all the elements are in place in the squad now for more success on the field.

“We face this season with a squad of excellent players. We have the utmost confidence placed in them, the coach and the coaching staff,” he stated.

“At this club there is never a time for complacency. We are demanding of ourselves and we always have one challenge: to excel. La Decima was for all Madridistas and our unity is our greatest strength,” he added.

And he continued: “2014 has been a very good year, as it is the first time in our history we claimed a double of a European Cup and a Copa del Rey title, but now we want more.”

Last season saw the meteoric rise of both Alvaro Morata and Jese Rodriguez, two of Real Madrid’s most gifted youth players in recent years. Now we take a look at the new crop of Castilla newbies looking to leave their mark at the Santiago Bernabeu this season.

Raul de Tomas – Striker

However easy it may be to run away with the idea of a new Raul at Real Madrid, De Tomas may be the closest Los Blancos have come to replacing their golden boy.

Like his namesake, De Tomas was born in the city of Madrid. He was signed by the club in 2004 and has appeared at almost every level with the academy. Although already a regular for the Castilla, the 19 year-old deserves a mention for his notable achievements, one of which, is the regularity with which he has represented his country at youth level.

A gifted goalscorer with good pace and a fine physique, De Tomas featured pre-season for the Real Madrid first team during their American tour, notably a friendly defeat to AS Roma. With Alvaro Morata out of the picture, he is sure to get his La Liga debut later in the campaign, with a chance of replicating his predecessors good form.

Enzo Fernandez – Central Midfielder

Perhaps the most easily recognised of Real Madrid’s youth players, Enzo Fernandez, who opted to take his mother’s second name, is the eldest son of Zinedine Zidane. Despite these attempts to shield the young Enzo from comparisons, it was always going to be the case that he’d be closely scrutinised.

After ten years in Madrid’s various youth academies, Enzo is now 19 years old and certainly old enough to be playing regularly for Castilla. Like his father, he plays in the midfield fulfilling a variety of roles. He also appears to have his father’s same close control that made him such a joy to watch, however, it’s very early to say how effective he will be.

With Jose Rodriguez loaned out to Deportivo La Coruna for the season, Enzo would fit perfectly into the Spaniard’s place in the Castilla. It’s vitally important that he is protected from any overly intrusive media attention and that he remains grounded, particularly as this is something Zizou is hoping to oversee himself. With his father able to monitor him more closely as the Castilla coach, their collaboration seems destined to happen.

Javier Munoz – Attacking Midfielder

A player who could very easily be overlooked when it comes to match analysis, Javier Munoz has everything at his disposal to become a fine player.

A local lad from the nearby municipality of Parla, Munoz joined Real Madrid’s Under-12 team in 2006 and has progressed through the various youth teams. He has been described as an unorthodox playmaker: one that can make the vital pass but will primarily seek to get himself into a position to score.

Although not the strongest and certainly not the tallest of players, Munoz has excellent stamina and will eat up the minutes even with a busy weekly schedule. Playing prodominantly as an offensive midfielder, Munoz can play a more withdrawn role as required.

He showcased his wonderfully diverse set of skills during the UEFA Youth League last season. Goals against Juventus and Napoli were personal highlights but couldn’t inspire his side to progress past the semi-finals. Although his near future points towards a loan spell away from the Santiago Bernabeu, Munoz could well find himself back and playing at the famous stadium in the course of his career.

Alvaro Medran – Central Midfielder

One of the better known faces on this list for his involvement with the Castilla, Alvaro Medran is looking to fill the void left by Jose Rodriguez.

Born in Cordoba, Medran joined Real Madrid in 2011 after stints at nearby clubs. He was noted for his decent passing ability and excellent ball retention despite his slight frame. Now, he has developed other aspects of his game to compliment these early traits.

Prefering to sit in front of the defensive line, Medran plays a similar game to Xabi Alonso with flamboyant long passes and stout defensive work. He has also been known to score the odd belter from range, but the emphasis of his game is dictating the passage of play.

Into his first full season with the Castilla, the 20 year old needs to make the most of his time under the tutelage of Zidane. He caught the eye last season when he netted from behind the halfway line, now the target must be match-by-match consistency.

Juan Jose Narvaez – Striker

Real Madrid’s summer of 2014 was spent hunting the mercurial striker Radamel Falcao, who ultimately joined Manchester United. However, it would appear Los Blancos already have their very own Colombian striker in the form of Juan Jose Narvaez.

Narvaez has spent much of his playing career in his homeland, making his debut for Deportivo Pasto back in 2011 at the age of 16. He had a trial with Tottenham Hotspur in the same year, meeting future Madrid star Gareth Bale in the process, however he soon returned to Colombia.

In 2012, at the insistence of Zinedine Zidane, Narvaez was signed for Real Madrid’s youth academy. He proved worthy of Zizou’s appraisal and would grab the headlines in the UEFA Youth League. Having put four goals past Juventus and scoring once against Galatasaray, Narvaez became his side’s most prolific goal scorer in the tournament.

Destined for a bright future, the 19 year old is now a full member of the Castilla team. With plenty of competition ahead of him from Raul de Tomas to Karim Benzema, Narvaez will have his work cut out if he wants to work his way into the Real Madrid first team.

Sergio Ramos says Real Madrid were at their most clinical against Deportivo La Coruna and would take great encouragement from the win.

Los Blancos won 8-2 at the Riazor in northern Spain, with Ronaldo getting a hat trick, Gareth Bale and Chicharito two goals each, and a stunning effort from James Rodriguez.

The win gets Real back on track in La Liga after two successive defeats, and also ended a goal-laden week in which they scored 13 times following the 5-1 win over Basel in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Ramos stated:  “It was difficult at first, but the team was very clear about what it wanted to do and we applied a lot of pressure and intensity. We were very clinical, winning the ball back and keeping possession. In the second half we maintained the intensity and the desire to score goals.”

He added that things change quickly in football and the team will take the positive feelings into the next few matches.

“The changes are the results. In football you go through periods that are not as good as what Real Madrid is accustomed to, but you can’t complain and you have to change the situation. The team has been scoring well since the last Champions League game. Now we have to maintain it in all competitions,” he added.

Real Madrid defender Alvaro Arbeloa has hailed his side’s 8-2 win over Deportivo La Coruna as a sign the team is fast improving.

A hat trick from Cristiano Ronaldo, a brace each from Gareth Bale and Javier Hernandez and a brilliant strike from James Rodriguez saw off the Galician side and got Carlo Ancelotti’s men back on track after two losses in their previous La Liga games.

Speaking after the match, the right back told journalists Los Blancos were improving each game and would now be seeking momentum to carry on into the campaign.

He stated: “We should be happy. You’re seeing a Real Madrid that is improving and more in tune, which is what we wanted. To do well we have to be at our best. We’re building momentum and an improvement can be seen. That’s what the manager wants.”

He added that he feels the team is now going in the right direction and that they would enjoy the next few days after netting eight times.

“Today we scored eight goals; it’s a lot and you can’t do something like that every day because it’s too many, but the team’s going in the right direction. The important thing for the team is that we all help each other. It doesn’t matter who plays at full back.”

New Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has admitted he would love to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has overseen a huge spending spree since taking over from David Moyes in the summer and has splashed out on the likes of Angel di Maria, Radamel Falcao, Daley Blind, Ander Herrera, Marcos Rojo and Luke Shaw.

And speaking ahead of his side’s trip to Leicester City this weekend, the former Holland and Barcelona boss told journalists he would like to sign the 29-year-old.

But he added that he doesn’t think Los Blancos would be likely to sell any time soon.

“It is possible,” Van Gaasl said about brining the Portuguese back to Old Trafford. And he added: “That’s what I have said with Falcao. Players like Ronaldo give a lot of extra to a team, but I don’t think Real Madrid shall sell him.”

Ronaldo has made no secret of his desire to one day return to the north west of England and it was reported earlier this month in the Madrid press that he was considering his long-term future in the Spanish capital following the sales of his good friend di Maria along with Xabi Alonso.

Real Madrid forward has hinted he would be interested in a move back to Tottenham Hotspur one day.

The Welshman signed for Los Blancos from the North London side last season in a 91-million-euro deal and fired the team to success in the Copa del Rey and Champions League.

Bale is settled in the Spanish capital and recently said in an interview that he hopes to remain for many years to come and achieve more success at the Santiago Bernabeu.

But speaking to BT Sport, he revealed he still has a deep affection for his former club and didn’t rule out moving back there once his time is up in Spain.

The 25-year-old stated: “I’ll never forget the great European nights at White Hart Lane. They were amazing. Tottenham will always have a place in my heart. I hope the fans still love me even though I’ve moved on. I love Spurs fans; you never know, I could come back one day.”

Prior to his move to Spain, Bale netted 55 times in 203 appearances for Spurs – 38 of which came in the final two of his six seasons there.

He was on the scoresheet midweek as Los Blancos defeat Basel 5-1 to get off to a winning start in the Champions League, as they seek to become the first team to win it back-to-back since it changed to its current format.

Carlo Ancelotti showed his satisfaction at Real Madrid’s emphatic win over Deportivo La Coruna, but confessed the team needs to improve in defense and become more consistent.

“We showed all the quality we have going forward. We have a phenomenon and a lot of other top quality players. They combined together really well and that was what stood out. However, we have to be even more consistent and improve the balance in the side,” the Italian stated.

Los Blancos boss praised his side’s performance in attack after scoring eight goals: “We played with a lot of intensity and tried to do things well throughout the game. We weren’t always able to pull it off, but we killed the match off thanks to our ability to finish off our chances up front. After suffering two defeats we have scored 13 goals in two games. That’s a sign that we have reacted well.”

When asked about the possibility of narrowing the gap with Barcelona in the table, Ancelotti claimed he’s not “thinking about that” at the moment. “We are focused on fixing the problems we have and concentrating on what we’re doing well. The season is long and making up for lost points is not a problem at the moment,” he added.

Ancelotti also praised the players who came on from the bench: “Illarramendi gave us balance, Isco, quality; and Chicharito, depth. I took Benzema off to bring on another midfielder and avoid any problems because at that stage of the game we didn’t have control of the ball.”
