Real Madrid ended their US tour with another defeat – this time to Manchester United – in a match that set the new record in the States for the highest attended football match.

And the 109,318 fans who packed into the Michigan stadium in Ann Arbor were treated to a brilliant attacking display from both sides. To add the icing on the cake, Cristiano Ronaldo made his first appearance of pre-season having work hard to overcome the injuries that plagued him at the end of last season and during the World Cup.

The Red Devils started the fastest of the two teams and took the lead on the 20 minute mark through Ashley Young, who finished off a move that involved Wayne Rooney, Darren Fletcher and Danny Welbeck.

Los Blancos though never lie down and get rolled over, and the response from Carlo Ancelotti’s team was almost immediate.

On the 26 minute mark, Xabi Alonso send a long ball over the top for Gareth Bale to run onto. When he was hauled down in the box by youngster Keane, the ref pointed to the spot. The Welshman picked himself up and placed his effort into the net.

Ancelotti’s side went into the break 2-1 down though, as Young scored his second of the game. His cross was missed by Rooney, who failed to connect, but it was enough to put off Casillas, who could do nothing to stop the ball going in.

The second half was more stop start, with a number of changes interrupting the flow of the game. But the biggest cheer of the night came with 15 minutes left of play as former United man Ronaldo made came on for his cameo. His introduction seemed to boost Real briefly, but he could do nothing to stop the Red Devils putting daylight between the sides. Chicarito headed home from close range with 10 minutes remaining to condemn Los Blancos to defeat.
