Real Madrid beat Tottenham Hotspur in the first match of the Audi Cup thanks to goals from James Rodriguez and Gareth Bale.

Both sides had chances of taking the lead in a thrilling start. Erik Lamela had a great opportunity to score as he fired high from a Danny Rose cross.

Minutes later, Jese Rodriguez hit the crossbar with a fizzing drive and was denied by Michel Vorm in the follow-up.

Both teams continued to show plenty of attacking intent after that, but Madrid looked the more likely to open the score.

Former Spurs men Gareth Bale and Luka Modric came close to making it 1-0 after the half-hour mark. Vorm was brilliant to save his team again.

Rafa Benitez men finally took the lead nine minutes before the break as James Rodriguez who took advantage of some slack marking to head Isco’s cross into the back of the net.

Both coaches made numerous changes after the break and that had a terrible impact in the game. Christian Eriksen’s shot over the crossbar was the only real chance that Tottenham had.

Spurs dominated possession but Los Merengues would end up sealing the victory thanks to Bale, who made it 2-0 with a long-range effort with 12 minutes to go.
