Asier Illarramendi: We want to do better next season

Improving on a season in which Real Madrid won the Copa del Rey and the Champions League will be a difficult one.

But it’s something that Los Blancos midfielder Asier Illarramendi has said the squad wants to do in the new season.

Los Blancos defeated bitter rivals Barcelona in the Copa del Rey final in April, Gareth Bale scoring a sensational late winner. The following month, they secured the long-awaited Decima, the club’s 10th European crown, beating city rivals Atletico Madrid 4-1 in extra time in Lisbon.

As a result of the successes this campaign, Carlo Ancelotti’s men will fight on six fronts next season – La Liga, Copa del Rey, Champions League, World Club Cup, Spanish Supercopa and European Supercopa.

And in an interview with AS, Illarramendi said the team wants to improve year on year. Anything less would be falling below the levels expected at a club the size of Real Madrid.

The midfielder, a summer signing from Real Sociedad last year, said: “We all want more and of course, I do too. The balance of the season for the team has been very positive.”

And he added: Can we do better than what has been achieved this year? We have won two trophies, including La Decima, which we’ll remember for a long time. I am very happy about that. But improving what the team has achieved this year will be very difficult.”
