Karim Benzema has been touted as possible future captain of Real Madrid by the team’s assistant manager Zinedine Zidane.

Although not being part of the first team regularly Iker Casillas has remained club captain, but when not on the field in league fixtures the opportunity has been open to other members of the squad.

Benzema has stepped up his game in recent months under the tutelage of Los Blancos legend, and fellow Frenchman, Zidane, who he has formed a close bond with the since his return to the club in a coaching capacity.

Having been constantly linked away from the Santiago Bernabeu in recent transfer windows, Benzema’s dramatic improvement in form helped the side to La Decima with five goals in eleven Champions League appearances this season.

Speaking to L’Equipe, Zidane said: “As has happened with the French national team, he could inherit the captain’s armband at this club. I hope he rises to the challenge next season.

“I’d like it if Karim took the initiative at Real Madrid, I want Karim to speak to the group rather than have others do it for him.”

Benzema is currently representing his national team, France, at the World Cup in Brazil and continued his good end of season form with two goals and an assist in France’s first group game against Honduras.
