Zinedine Zidane appears to be on the right track to make the successful transition from world-class player to manager of the highest quality. The Frenchman has already achieved one of the crowning pinnacles of the game by guiding Real Madrid to the Champions League crown last season, the club’s 11th European title and second in the past three years.

Real’s form in La Liga has been dominant in the 2016-17 campaign, suggesting that the balance of power has swung back in their favour in their El Clasico battle with Barcelona. Their record-breaking run of 40 matches without defeat in all competitions was ended by Sevilla, but it was enough to remove the Catalan club’s name from the top spot in Spanish football.

The club have watched their city rivals Atletico boast the most formidable defence in La Liga since Diego Simeone’s arrival at the Vicente Calderon. Their defensive performances on the road have been impressive, although the Frenchman will not have been satisfied with their late collapse against Sevilla that cost them their unbeaten record with Keylor Navas struggling between the sticks.

Real had only conceded five goals away from the Bernabeu until their loss at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan, and with Sevilla along with Barcelona in striking distance of them at the top of table, Zidane will be demanding an improvement on their already high standards of play.

The Frenchman has been outstanding thus far into his reign, but one of the most pleasing aspects for Madrid fans is his view for the future not just until the end of the current campaign, but into the seasons beyond. With Zidane in place Real could be set to keep the La Liga crown away from Barcelona’s hand for the seasons to come.

The company Deloitte have published the ranking of the richest clubs in the world. The list takes in consideration the amount of money earned in the season 2015/16. According to the firm, Los Blancos dropped until the third position, beaten by Manchester United and FC Barcelona.

The richest club in the world, or the one making more money in the last season, is Manchester United. The Red Devils earned €689M in the last season despite failing to qualify to the Champions League and the expensive acquisitions of Pogba or Mkhitaryan. Obviously, the economic side and the sports side are completely different.

The second in the list is FC Barcelona. The Blaugranas earned €620,2M last season after winning the Copa del Rey and La Liga. The Catalan club beat their rival Real Madrid, who earned €620,1M last season. Despite winning the Champions League, Los Blancos couldn’t step forward in the list. Another piece of bad news for Florentino Pérez after the defeat in Copa del Rey.

In the list we can see many Premier League clubs. This is why the British competition is the most competitive in the world and the list shows why they have the economic power to sign every year the best players in the world. Bad news for Real Madrid. Following up the second straight defeat against Celta de Vigo, the club confirmed the injury of Daniel Carvajal, who missed the first leg of Copa del Rey quarter-finals. The right back will be out of the squad one month, so he risks missing the Champions League Last 16 Round against Napoli.

Real Madrid confirmed in their official website that Carvajal has a muscular problem in his right leg: “Following the tests carried out today on Dani Carvajal at the Sanitas La Moraleja University Hospital, he has been diagnosed with a grade 2 injury to his right biceps femoris. His recovery will continue to be assessed”, the press release announced.

Therefore, Dani Carvajal will miss at least four La Liga games -Málaga, Real Sociedad, Celta de Vigo and Osasuna- and the Copa del Rey fixtures. He could arrive to the first leg of the last 16 round in Champions League against Napoli, taking place on the 15th of February. However, it’s not sure that the Spaniard would be fit for the clash.

Unfortunately for Real Madrid fans, Carvajal has been one of the best players of the team in the last months. The right back forced the penalty against Sevilla in La Liga and he has been the owner of the right back position in these weeks. Danilo has to replace him but the Brazilian has had some problems in the past.

Actually, most Real Madrid supporters booed Danilo when he was substituted against Celta de Vigo in Copa del Rey. The Brazilian was having several problems defending Bongonda and Iago Aspas, and the Spaniard finally found the net, bringing misery to Los Blancos. Zinedine Zidane defended him in press conference, but he hasn’t showed the right level with Real Madrid so far. Now Danilo has the opportunity to do the right things and start playing as he used to do with Porto.

Zinedine Zidane spoke in press conference after the defeat (1-2) against Celta de Vigo in the first leg of the quarter finals of the Copa del Rey. Los Blancos lost their second straight game, so the alarm went off: “I’m not surprised about Celta, we knew they were a good team and they are able to hurt you. I’m not worried but it’s a bad moment”, Zidane said.

The manager wants to look forward to the next game: “We know we can overcome the moment. This game is over. We know we can go there and change this, but we have a La Liga game before. I’m the responsible and I have to look for a solution”, the coach affirmed.

Zidane wasn’t happy about the first 45 minutes: “It’s strange, especially at the beginning, because we didn’t do the game we prepared. We struggled to come in the game. Now I’m going to analyze it and the good thing is that we have a game on Saturday”.

According to the manager, the game against Sevilla was very important: “It’s true that the defeat there bothered us and afterwards we rest badly, but there are no excuses. We are Real Madrid and we have to keep working. We did some good things until now, but in the last two games we cannot be happy, especially for the result. The content in Sevilla was good, but not today. The two rivals hurt us and we have to analyze why this is happening. We didn’t do the thing as were prepared, especially with the intensity at the start of the game”.

After the FIFA Club World Cup and the big amounts of games Los Blancos are playing, the team might be tired: “We start bad the game, but it’s not because we are not fine physically. The game against Sevilla was tough”, Zidane said in front of the journalists.

One of the players pointed by Real Madrid fans was Danilo, who had to play because of the injury suffered for Cavajal: “Danilo is in his place, he played a good game today and he’s going to have the opportunity to play. Let’s see what happen in the next game”, the manager finished.

Real Madrid lost their second straight (1-2) game of the season against Celta de Vigo in the first leg of the Copa del Rey quarter finals round. Iago Aspas was the hero for the Galician team, scoring one goal and giving one assist. These back to back defeats mean that Los Blancos are almost eliminated from the competition.

Zinedine Zidane introduced some changes in the line-up. As expected, Kiko Casilla and Danilo had their opportunity but the manager also put in the pitch Marco Asensio and Lucas Vázquez, playing with five midfielders, with Cristiano Ronaldo as striker. The main aim was to control the game, something that actually happened.

The first half was very level. Los Blancos had the ball and arrived with more danger to Sergio’s goal but the were unable to create clear chances. Lucas Vázquez was very active in the wing, but Cristiano Ronaldo couldn’t catch any ball in the box. Celta are very dangerous team and they created some good opportunities in the counterattack, always with Iago Aspas as a protagonist. However, the fist half was goalless without many chances.

In the second half Real Madrid keep trying but Celta scored first. Iago Aspas found the way into the defenders to score the first goal. Again Danilo could do more and he is proving himself he doesn’t deserve to be in the squad. Los Blancos woke up and they could level the game straight away thanks to Marcelo. However, it wasn’t the day and Johny scored the second after an assist from Iago Aspas. Zidane tried to make some changes but the team was lost. Nevertheless, Benzema had a huge chance to tie the match at the end.

In only three days, Los Blancos have lost two games and they are almost knocked out of the Copa del Rey. In one week time, they need to travel to Galicia and score at least two goals to continue in the Copa del Rey.

The goalkeeper is not at his best, so the club is working to find in the market a new goalkeeper.

And according to the Spanish newspaper OKDiario, this player would be Keylor Navas. The Costa Rican goalkeeper shone last year with Real Madrid, becoming one of the best players of the squad. However, this year he has found some controversy, especially after the game against Sevilla, so Los Blancos are already thinking in the possibility of signing a new goalkeeper.

Actually, there are rumours affirming that Florentino Pérez club is speaking with Thibaut Courtois, the Chelsea goalkeeper, who will be very happy to go back to Madrid, where his family lives. If Los Blancos finally decide to sign the Belgian keeper, Navas would have to leave and Manchester City could be his destiny. Zinedine Zidane is not going to change his way of thinking despite the defeat at Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán on Sunday. The French manager will keep rotating the squad and Keylor Navas will be the goalkeeper in La Liga.

At least this is what Zidane said in the press conference before the game against Celta de Vigo in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals. He didn’t want to give any clue about the line-up but he will continue making some changes: “We have a lot of games. We’re going to play every three days until March, before the national fixtures. The good thing is that we’re recovering players. We are missing Pepe, Coentrao and Bale, but little by little they are coming back and this is good for us. I’m going to think to make the line-up”, Zidane said. The manager didn’t want to confirm whether Cristiano Ronaldo will start or not on Wednesday.

Zidane will make some changes in the game against Celta: “I don’t think the team is tired, on the contrary. I’m going to use everybody and the message won’t change. If I’m going to repeat the line-up, this doesn’t change anything, but I’m going to count on the 24 players until the end of the season. If we win something, it will be for all of them”.

Zidane also wanted to defend Keylor Navas from the criticism around him after the game against Sevilla: “I see Keylor really well. He’s doing a good season, but of course we can ask him more. Until now, he’s been the goalkeeper of the 40 games unbeaten. He was in the team”, the manager explained.
