Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti has said he was pleased with the attitude and professionalism of his players following their 2-0 over Elche last night.

Los Blancos opened up a four point lead on rivals Barcelona, thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema. Los Cules had lost at home to Malaga the previous evening.

Speaking after the match, Ancelotti said the players got the job done and if they carried on playing as they are now, they’ll win a lot of games.

“It was important match given what happened yesterday and has enabled us to pull further away from Barcelona. We did well in every aspect of the game and played very well. We this kind of attitude we are going to win a lot of games,” he said.

“The team really understood that this was an important match and everyone worked really hard. The team are improved bit by bit and we are also coming along in terms of fitness. We have to continue like this. I didn’t have any doubts about the team because they also played extremely well in the first half. We controlled the game”.

Asked about his side’s improvement since the hammering by Atletico a fortnight ago, Ancelotti expressed his delight at the response shown by the players.

“It is pretty clear for all to see that following the defeat to Atlético we have now gone three games without conceding. That means the team are defending well. We didn’t give our opponents many opportunities either today or on Wednesday,” he commented.

Real Madrid moved four points clear of Barcelona at the top of La Liga thanks to a 0-2 victory at Elche.

Isco put in a superb performance to guide Los Blancos to their third consecutive win, thanks to goals from Karim Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Carlo Ancelotti men came out strong and had two big chances to score in the first five minutes. Gareth Bale’s goal was disallowed for offside and Cristiano Ronaldo’s shot hit the woodwork.

The Portuguese had a major chance after 15 minutes as he met a low Bale cross, but somehow he diverted his effort away from goal

Los Merengues dominated the first half completely and even had another goal disallowed before the break. Benzema sent the ball to the back of the net with a brilliant bicycle kick, but the offside flag was raised again.

Elche tried to react in the second half as Victor Rodriguez found some space inside the box and curled an effort straight at Iker Casillas.

Yet, the visitors took the lead just before the hour mark as Benzema turned home from close range following a terrible mix-up inside the Elche box.

Ten minutes later, Los Blancos sealed the victory thanks to Ronaldo. Isco reached the byline and clipped in a cross, before the Portuguese attacked the ball with a powerful header into the back of the net.

Real consolidate their lead in La Liga after the difficult days that followed the 4-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid. Since the derby, Los Blancos have won three straight games against Deportivo de La Coruna, Schalke and Elche.

Real Madrid defender Pepe has said Cristiano Ronaldo is as happy as ever despite a goalscoring drought by his standards.

The 30-year-old went three games without scoring but ended that run when he found the net in the 2-0 win over Schalke on Wednesday evening in the Champions League.

And Pepe said the rest of the squad was pleased to see their talisman back to scoring ways, but the player himself has been totally unaffected by an indifferent form he may have been going through.

Speaking to the Real Madrid website, Pepe, who recently made his comeback following an injury layoff, said:”Cristiano is like he is always, happy and encouraging his team-mates. That is what we want from him, for him to transmit that happiness within the dressing room. I’m content with his continuous work to help out his team-mates. We are delighted for him that he has scored again.

“He knows he is playing for Real Madrid and is aware of the pressure that entails, but we are by his side.”

The Portugal defender also had words of encouragement for Lucas Silva after a good performance against the Bundesliga side.

“Lucas Silva has really surprised me, he has a lot of quality. He has come to help us but we have to show patience because we know that this is Real Madrid. He will be talked about a lot in the future because he is a very humble guy, he has his feet on the ground and he likes to work.”

Real Madrid will look to make it three victories in a row after a wobbly start to 2015. Los Blancos are still on top of the table with a one-point lead over Barcelona, but they cannot afford any more slip-ups.

Carlo Ancelotti men were in a delicate situation after their 4-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid at the derby, but two victories against Deportivo de La Coruna and Schalke 04 seem to have put them back on track.

Elche seems like a good place to extend their winning run, as Los Merengues haven’t lost there since 1978. Furthermore, Cristiano Ronaldo has always put in superb performances against them. He has scored six goals in two appearances against the Southern Spain side.

Ancelotti major doubt for the match is Daniel Carvajal, who suffered a wound in his leg against Schalke. If the wound heals on time, he will feature against Elche. Otherwise Alvaro Arbeloa will start at right-back.

Fabio Coentrao is also a doubt with muscle problems, so it seems like Marcelo will not rest after the Champions League clash. Pepe and Raphael Varane will be the centre-back pair.

Los Merengues are still missing Sergio Ramos, James Rodriguez, Sami Khedira and Luka Modric, so Ancelotti will have to decide who to line-up alongside Toni Kroos and Isco in midfield. After his performance in Germany, Lucas Silva is expected to make it in the starting line-up.

Meanwhile, Elche will only miss midfielder Pedro Mosquera due to injury. Fran Escriba men are in great shape, having won their last two league games, and they are confident of savaging some points against the leaders.

Possible line-ups:

Elche: Tyton; Suarez, Lomban, Roco, Albacar; Fajr, Adrian Gonzalez, Pasalic, Niguez: Victor Rodriguez, Jonathas.

Real Madrid: Casillas; Arbeloa, Pepe, Varane, Marcelo; Bale, Kroos, Silva, Isco; Benzema, Ronaldo.

Carlo Ancelotti has said he and his players don’t feel under pressure despite knowing they could lose first place in La Liga temporarily if Barcelona win this weekend.

The Catalans will overtake them in the race for La Liga should they win before Los Blancos take on Elche on Sunday night – something that would crank up the pressure on the 10-time European Cup champions what with their indifferent form so far in 2015.

But speaking at a press conference ahead of his side’s game, Ancelotti said everyone within the club was calm and knew what they need to do to regain their play at the top of the table.

“It’s going to be an intense game played at a high pace. Elche have improved their play in the last fifteen days. They’re well organised and confident. It’s a difficult game for us at the end of week in which we’ve done well and we want to complete well in the game tomorrow,” he said.

And he added: “We don’t feel under pressure. The only pressure we have is playing a difficult game. We know that by winning it, we’ll remain top of La Liga. That’s our objective for the game tomorrow.”

Real Madrid will pay a visit to Elche at Martinez Valero Stadium on Sunday. Los Blancos have traditionally obtained good results at this stadium, so it seems like an ideal day for Carlo Ancelotti men to extend the victory run they started against Deportivo de La Coruna and continued against Schalke 04.

Madrid has visited Elche in 22 occasions, 20 in La Liga and two in the Copa del Rey. They’ve brought points back home in 16 of those matches, obtaining ten wins, six draws and six loses against Elche.

Los Merengues have won their last four games at Martinez Valero: three in La Liga and one in the Copa. Should they avoid a defeat on Sunday, they would match their best run: an unbeaten streak of five straight matches at Elche. Their best run dates back to the 60’s, when they earned four wins and one draw between 1959 and 1963.

The last Real Madrid defeat at Elche took place in 1978 when Los Blancos lost 3-1. However, this is a tricky statistics, since the Southern-Spain side played in the second division from 1989 to 2013 and didn’t face Real.

Manchester City midfielder Frank Lampard says criticism of Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale is harsh and is leading to him making unselfish decisions on the pitch.

The Welshman enjoyed a superb first season in the Spanish capital, scoring in the Champions League and Copa del Rey finals as Los Blancos finally ended their 12-year wait for La Decima.

He also netted in the Club World Cup final earlier this campaign, meaning he’s scored in three of the four finals he’s won as a Real Madrid player. This season has also been a productive one for the 25-year-old as he’s scored 14 times and assisted eight others in 33 appearances.

But he’s come in from criticism from sections of the Madrid support for being too selfish and not passing to team mates who are in a better position to score.

In quotes published by AS, Lampard, who will join New York City at the end of the campaign, said Bale needs to be more selfish and added the criticism is playing on his mind during games.

“He’s got to be more selfish. I get the feeling he is a nice boy,” the ex-Chelsea man stated. He added: “There is a bit of an ego and he should have some because of what he has achieved in the game, but maybe there is a moment when he thinks ‘should I go for goal and take it on or should I look for another option in case I get criticised?'”

Former Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has said Jose Mourinho couldn’t handle the pressure of being manager of Los Blancos.

The now Chelsea boss was in charge of the 10-time Champions League winners between 2010 and 2013 and lifted La Liga and the Copa del Rey during his time in the Spanish capital.

He failed in his main objective to win Europe’s top prize, and is most remembered for his falling out with most of the Real squad, opposition bosses and players, and members of the Spanish FA.

Mourinho, who considers himself a special talent in the world of football management despite not winning a trophy in more than two years, dropped Iker Casillas in favour of Diego Lopez, and also had rows some of Madrid’s more senior players.

Speaking to BBC World Service, Calderon said the Portugese boss’ departure was down to his inability to deal with the pressure of managing the biggest club in world football.

“To be a manager of Real Madrid is really, really difficult. He is someone who is used to coping with pressure and he couldn’t.When Mourinho left, things were in a really bad situation. He had to leave the club after three years of a lot of problems, a lot of confrontations.”
He then went on to praise Carlo Ancelotti, saying he has brought calm to the club. “I think he [Ancelotti] has done a very good job, not only because he won the Champions League but because things are calm, relaxed and everything is smooth.”

Real Madrid and Atletico de Madrid have set their eyes on Augsburg’s Ghanaian left-back Baba Rahman, according to reports from Spain.

The 20-year-old defender has had a terrific performance in the recent African Cup of Nations. His great season at the Bundesliga has also awaken interest from a number of big European clubs.

Borussia Dortmund and AS Roma had previously shown an interest in signing Rahman, and now Spanish press has reported Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid have joined the fight.

Los Blancos are willing to sign a young left-back to become Marcelo’s new back-up, since Fabio Coentrao is expected to leave the club next summer.

Florentino Perez’s first choice is Valencia’s 19-year-old Jose Luis Gaya, but the Spaniard is on talks to extend his contract and increase his buy-out clause, which would make the transfer pretty difficult.

Atletico are also looking for a left-back since they might lose Cristian Ansaldi in June, as the Argentinian is on loan from Zenit Saint Petersburg.

Rahman would be a pretty good deal for both Madrid clubs, since his buy-out clause is 10 million euros and he’s one of the biggest African prospects. In marketing terms, it would also open the door to the big African market.

Rahman signed for Augsburg last summer from Greuther Furth in a 2.5 million euros. He has made 16 appearances for the German club, becoming a guaranteed starter and making a big impression in the Bundesliga.

Luka Modric

Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric has returned to training after three months on the sidelines due to injury.

The 29-year-old suffered a thigh injury back in November, during Croatia’s Euro 2016 qualifier against Italy.

In his absence, Los Blancos broke a run of 22 straight wins in all competitions and suffered a wobbly start to 2015, being knocked out of the Copa del Rey and reducing their lead in La Liga down to one point.

Thus, Modric’s return is great news for Carlo Ancelotti, who has struggled to find balance in midfield without the Croatian. Sami Khedira and Asier Illarramendi have not performed as expected when replacing Modric and new signing Lucas Silva is still adapting to Madrid.

Modric first training day at Valdebebas since November took place the day after Real Madrid’s victory over Schalke in the Champions League.

The Croatia international completed a part of the training session with the team, but opted out of the match on a miniature pitch to jog alone.

Real Madrid doctors have not revealed yet when Modric will be fit to return to action, although it seems like he would still need to spend a couple of weeks more recovering.

The other four injured players -James Rodriguez, Sergio Ramos, Fabio Coentrao and Khedira- completed a specific training session in the gym.
