There has been an injury blow for Real Madrid as influential midfielder Toni Kroos has suffered a knee injury that could keep him on the sidelines for a while. It is suspected that the Germany international has knee ligament damage, which will give Real Madrid boss Zinedine Zidane an unwanted selection headache.

Kroos missed out on the trip to Betis for the crucial La Liga contest, but the specific length of time for the injury is not yet known. A lot will depend on how well the player himself can recover from this setback and just how bad the damage actually is.

The player is said to have suffered the injury during the first half of the brilliant 3-1 win against Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League on Wednesday night. That result has given Los Blancos a crucial advantage in the last 16 tie, with the second leg coming up in a few weeks time.

Timescale unknown

It remains to be seen whether or not Toni Kroos will be back for that second leg. The fact that he picked up the injury in the first half of the match and still went on to play 90 minutes says it all about the character of the player. We just have to hope that he hasn’t made the damage any worse than it already was.

Regarding the injury, a statement on the official Real Madrid website had this to say:

“Following tests carried out on Toni Kroos by the Sanitas Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a sprained to the exterior lateral ligament in the left knee,”

“His recovery will continue to be assessed.”

Kroos has scored four goals and given seven assists so far this season in his 29 appearances, so his presence will be missed for however long he is out.

Real Betis v Real Madrid Preview

Real Betis are on a decent run of form and are fresh off the back of a good win away to Deportivo La Coruna last week. As they have won a few games recently, they will look for changes to be at a minimum. Antonio Barragan missed the last game through suspension but may come back in here.

Having put a lot of effort into the game on Wednesday night against PSG, Los Blancos boss Zinedine Zidane may decide to make some changes for the La Liga contest at Betis. Gareth Bale started the Champions League game on the bench and is probably going to start here. However Marco Ascensio had a great game too so will be looking for a spot from the start.

Real Betis v Real Madrid Prediction

Real Madrid will go into this game completely full of confidence after earning a brilliant first leg lead against Paris Saint Germain in the Champions League last 16. That result was following up on a 5-2 win over Real Sociedad so things are looking up.

Betis are beginning to turn their season around too after a couple of wins in a row. The 0-5 defeat to Barcelona now seems like a distant memory for them, as they have climbed to 8th in the La Liga table.

Los Blancos are expected to win this game pretty comfortably and the attacking power on show should be far too much for Betis to handle.

Cristiano Ronaldo stepped up with a double to make sure Real Madrid will take an advantage into the second leg in Paris. This was a fantastic first leg tie in the last-16 of the Champions League with so much action right from the first whistle.

It did not go all Real Madrid’s way though, as it was actually the visitors that took the lead just past the half hour mark. Los Blancos were caught out on the break and the ball eventually fell to Adrien Rabiot in the centre of the box, who calmly placed the ball past Keylor Navas to put the visitors ahead.

Real Madrid were to equalise from the penalty spot just before half time as Toni Kroos was dragged down in the penalty area. Ronaldo stepped up and made no mistake, firing the ball home in emphatic fashion to level things up in the tie.

Ronaldo is used to breaking records and with this goal he became the first player in Champions League history to score 100 goals for the same club. It was a breathless first half and was all set up to be the same in the second.

That wasn’t really the case though, as the second half was mostly nervy and cagey. This lasted until the 83rd minute, as Marco Ascensio’s cross was palmed into the path of Ronaldo who then turned the ball home with his left knee.

It was Ascensio who was the creator yet again just a few minutes later. This time it was Brazilian full back Marcelo who had made a burst forward into the box. His volley then found the net, though there was some suspect goalkeeping on show.

So, it is advantage Real and the second leg will be taking place at the Parc des Princes in Paris on 6th March.

Former Real Madrid superstar Guti has said that Los Blancos must keep current boss Zinedine Zidane as their head coach regardless of what happens in the Champions League last 16 tie against Paris Saint Germain. This will be a big boost for the Frenchman, who is under pressure at the moment.

Guti is Real’s current under-18s coach and during his playing career managed to score 77 goals in the white of Real Madrid between 1995 and 2010. During that period, he also won five La Liga titles and three Champions League trophies. Guti has had a good amount of success in management too, as his under-18s side completed a domestic treble last year.

That was his first season in charge, so there are plenty of eyes on him to see how his coaching career progresses, with many pundits touting him as a future Real Madrid first team head coach.

Guti Backs Zidane

Speaking to Spanish publication Marca, Guti said:

“This is Madrid’s last bullet [for this season], but I hope this is not Zidane’s final [year],”

“We must not forget what he has done. Zidane must continue.”

However, Guti then went on to say that if the decision was made to remove Zidane from his role then it would be tough to say no to Real Madrid president Florentino Perez if the big job was offered to him.

“How would I not want to coach Real Madrid some day?

“If Florentino offered me the first team I would say yes, I am ready.”

Zinedine Zidane has been a major success since taking charge of Real, and having won the Champions League and La Liga double last year any decision made to sack him would be harsh. He is under no illusions that he needs to win matches in order to save his job though.

It is also reported that the players have vowed give everything on the pitch in order to beat PSG.

Real Madrid v Paris Saint Germain is a huge game in the context of the season and  Real Madrid will really want to claim an advantage going into the second leg in Paris. Real Madrid were not great in the group stages, so now is the time to put in a big performance.

Real Madrid v Paris Saint Germain Preview

Zinedine Zidane will not be able to select Dani Carvajal for this first leg game as he is suspended. This is a huge blow for Los Blancos as PSG’s danger man Neymar will be playing from the left for them. Nacho is expected to cover that position instead of Achraf Hakimi. Casemiro and Bale were rested at the weekend and will come back in.

For PSG, Edinson Cavani sat out the game at the weekend as a precaution but he is expected to return for this huge clash. Thiago Silva, Marco Verratti and Layvin Kurzawa were all rested too and will start. Former Real Madrid man Angel di Maria will likely start from the bench.

Real Madrid v Paris Saint Germain Predicted Lineups

Real Madrid (4-3-3): Navas; Nacho, Ramos, Varane, Marcelo; Modric, Casemiro, Kroos; Ronaldo, Bale, Benzema

Paris Saint Germain (4-3-3): Areloa; Alves; Marquinhos, Silva, Kurzawa; Verratti, Celso, Rabiot; Mbappe, Cavani and Neymar

Real Madrid v Paris Saint Germain Prediction

It has become quite clear that Real Madrid are not going to retain their La Liga title this season and they are out of the Copa Del Rey, so the Champions League is the last chance of any major silverware for Los Blancos.

PSG are dominating in France and are expected to win all of their domestic trophies. That being said, they will not be happy with their season if the go out of the Champions League at the last 16 stage, so they will be up for this game.

Since Real Madrid’s form is so hit and miss, PSG actually go into the tie as favourites to progress overall but there will be a lot of pressure on the French side and Real Madrid usually turn up in the knockout stages of the Champions League.

Real Madrid had an easy night’s work on Saturday as they comfortably saw off Real Sociedad, with the visitors not really posing much threat at all throughout the evening. It was the fast start that won it for Zinedine Zidane’s men, as they went into the break with an amazing 4-0 lead.

The tone was set extremely early on, in the very first minute of the match in fact, as Cristiano Ronaldo put in an inch perfect cross for Lucas Vazquez to head home. It was then Ronaldo himself that added the second goal of the evening, as he fired home from a Marcelo cross.

There were only 34 minutes on the clock when German midfielder Toni Kroos added Real Madrid’s 3rd goal of the evening and at this point it was becoming a walk in the park for Los Blancos. It got even better before half time too, as Ronaldo grabbed his second goal of the game to make it 4-0. Luka Modric put in a fantastic corner and Ronaldo rose to head it in.

Real Sociedad were a lot better after the break, though they couldn’t really be any worse. Real Madrid also noticeably took their foot off the gas with one eye on the huge Champions League clash with Paris Saint Germain coming up this week.

Jon Bautista pulled a goal back for Sociedad in the 74th minute, but Real made sure to get on the scoresheet again and of course it was Ronaldo grabbing his hat trick with a close range finish. Former Real Madrid man Asier Illarramendi had the final say on the night but it was simply a consolation goal for Real Sociedad, with the match ending in a 5-2 victory for Madrid.

Real’s home form is improving, with this following the 7-1 hammering of Deportivo La Coruna at the Santiago Bernabeu a few weeks ago.

Alvaro Morata has admitted in a recent interview that he would always be open to a return to Real Madrid at some point in the future if Los Blancos were interested in signing him. Morata left the Santiago Bernabeu in the summer for a fee of around £70 million but the move has not turned out brilliantly so far.

The player was deemed surplus to requirements at Real Madrid as boss Zinedine Zidane could not guarantee him enough starts, with Karim Benzema often preferred in the lone striker role. There were a few teams interested in his services at the time, including Manchester United and the bid was too high for Real to turn down.

Since signing for Chelsea, things have been a mixed bag for the Spanish international. He started the season really well, scoring plenty of goals including a great hat trick against Stoke City. However, there has been plenty of criticism for his performances in recent weeks as he has missed a number of chances. Injury and suspension problems have also taken their toll.

Possible Return To Madrid

Morata is Chelsea’s record signing but their fans will not be too happy with the player’s recent quotes, stating his love for Real Madrid. When speaking to Espacio Reservado, Morata said:

‘I have to respect Chelsea who have made a great effort for me. And I’m very happy here. But Madrid is always Madrid.’

The ex-Real man is out injured with a back injury at the moment so these comments have not came at a good time for the London club. It remains to be seen whether or not Real Madrid would be interested in signing Morata once again.

Of course, Los Blancos have already let Morata go and re-signed him once before. They sold him to Juventus before activating the buy-back clause in 2016.

For the visitors, Adnan Januzaj will be missing so Xabi Prieto, Mikel Oyarzabal and Sergio Canales to battle it out for a place in the team. Igor Zubeldia is likely to stay in the team at the base of midfield, with the youngster doing a good job recently.

Real Madrid v Real Sociedad Prediction

Real Madrid are in a strange run of form at the moment, as they have lost two of their last three home games in La Liga, but they did hammer Deportivo La Coruna 7-1 at the Santiago Bernabeu a few weeks ago.

Los Blancos have only claimed one clean sheet in their last five home matches and the strikers are not firing on all cylinders at the moment either.

Real Sociedad may have come into form at just the wrong time for Real, as the visitors ended a run of four La Liga defeats in a row last time out with a 5-0 win over Deportivo. Real Madrid are still expected to win this game comfortably though.
