Match Report: Real Madrid 0 - Villarreal 1: Real Suffer Shock Defeat

It looks as if Real Madrid will not be successfully defending the La Liga title after a shock 0-1 home defeat to Villarreal on Saturday left Los Blancos 16 points behind the league leaders. Barcelona are in action on Sunday evening and could increase the gap to 19 points with a win.

Zinedine Zidane’s Real Madrid side were expecting a tough game against the Yellow Submarine, but a victory was still on the cards before the game due to the attacking power Los Blancos had at their disposal. Though, as the rain fell at the Santiago Bernabeu, the big players such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Gareth Bale and Isco looked out of sorts.

Ronaldo was denied a penalty in the first half after he felt a trip from Mario Gaspar. That set the tone, as Real dominated much of the first half but could not break through. Marcelo’s good strike was saved by Sergio Asenjo on 17 minutes. The Villarreal keeper was arguably man of the match, as he produced a string of great saves. Ronaldo’s deflected free kick being turned against the bar was a good example.

Pablo Fornals created a great first half chance for Carlos Bacca but the striker was denied by Keylor Navas. Early in the second half, Villarreal almost took the lead when Casemiro was dispossessed and former Los Blancos player Denis Cheryshev shot wide.

They kept coming forward too, and growing in confidence Bacca hit the side netting on 65 minutes. At the other end, Ronaldo hit a shot straight at the Villarreal keeper in what was turning out to be a frustrating afternoon. Luka Modric then had a chance late on but fired over the bar.

Real were then caught on the counter with a goal that may have plunged the club into crisis. Cheryshev picked the ball up and fed Enes Unal. Unal’s shot was kept out by Navas but the rebound fell to Fornals who lobbed the ball into the net. Real are now just a point clear of 5th placed Villarreal. This result, along with the draw at Celta Vigo have put manager Zinedine Zidane under a lot of pressure.

Los Blancos currently sit in 4th place in La Liga, 4 points clear of the visitors. As there is a 5 point gap between Real Madrid and 3rd placed Valencia, a win against Villarreal would be a massive boost. Remember that Real Madrid have a game in hand on all of the sides around them, too.

Dani Carvajal will be back in the side after this suspension, while Isco is expected to line up just behind a front two of Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale. Karim Benzema and Sergio Ramos are out injured.

For Villarreal, Manu Trigueros is back from a ban himself and is expected to come straight back into the team at central midfield. Victor Ruiz will be missing due to suspension though, with Daniele Bonera to come in. Andres Fernandez, Ruben Semedo and Bruno Soriano are injured.

  • Villarreal have won 4, drawn 1 and lost 5 games out of the last 10.
  • In the last 10 games, Real Madrid have scored an average of 2 goals and have conceded an average of 1.2 goals.

Real Madrid v Villarreal Prediction

Real Madrid have drawn their last two games in all competitions, and Los Blancos are still looking for their first La Liga win of 2018. This would be a great time to get it too, as it could create a gap between the top 4 and the rest of the pack.

Real’s home form is still pretty good, having won five of their last six league games at the Santiago Bernabeu and a win here is necessary if Zinedine Zidane’s side want to put any pressure on the sides above them. Villarreal’s recent form has been good, only losing one of their last five in all competitions.

Real Madrid have a pretty good record against Villarreal over the years and are expected to win again here. The form of the returning Gareth Bale could be a key factor in the match.

Match Report: Real Madrid 2 - Numancia 2: Real Safely Through To Last 8

Real Madrid have made it through to the quarter finals of the Copa Del Rey after safely seeing off Numancia over two legs. The second leg at the Santiago Bernabeu ended in a 2-2 draw, with a much changed Los Blancos side being held to a stalemate on the night.

Zinedine Zidane’s side held a convincing 3-0 lead from the first leg of the tie, which had pretty much wrapped things up before the second leg even took place. The boss decided to make 10 changes for the match on Wednesday, giving a lot of youngsters the opportunity to play for the first team with very little risk of losing the three goal lead.

Lucas Vazquez was one of the most recognisable names in the starting eleven, and he was the man that put Los Blancos in front on the night. The attacker headed in with just 10 minutes gone on the clock. The lead was then held for 35 minutes, until Guillermo equalised for second-tier Numancia from a well worked counter-attack.

Vazquez was on the score sheet again just before the hour mark with a tap in from close range. It then turned into a game of which player can score more, as Guillermo equalised again with a header. Numancia actually ended the match with just 10 men too, as Dani Calvo was sent off for them late on due to a second bookable offence.

Though this match offered a decent test, with Numanica a side looking for promotion to La Liga, the tie was pretty much won in the first leg which gave Real Madrid the chance to relax. It was the same story as the last found against Fuenlabrada. A more important game is to come on Saturday, as Villarreal travel to the Santiago Bernabeu in La Liga. The big players such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale should be back in for that one.

Real Madrid v Numancia Prediction & Preview Copa Del Rey

Real Madrid v Numancia in the Copa Del Rey last 16 second leg gives Zinedine Zidane the opportunity to rest some of his big players after bringing a 3-0 lead back to the Santiago Bernabeu. This is the second leg of the round of 16 contest and Real should easily reach the last 8 from this point.

Real Madrid v Numancia Preview

It is expected that Real Madrid will name a similar side to the first leg, where they claimed an excellent 3-0 win. In that contest, Numancia put up a great fight for most of the match but Real’s quality shone through with two late goals. Zidane rested players like Cristiano Ronaldo in the first leg and it will be a major shock if the Portuguese superstar plays here.

For Real, Karim Benzema is missing with a hamstring injury while Sergio Ramos has a muscle issue. This means that several youngsters are likely to be given a chance to impress. Numancia will not be able to call on Pape Diamanka for the visit to the Bernabeu, as the 27-year-old midfielder received a red card in the first leg after a challenge on Nacho earned him a second yellow card.

Real Madrid v Numancia Predicted Lineups

Real Madrid (4-3-3): Casilla; Achraf, Nacho, Vallejo, Hernandez; Casemiro, Kovacic, Ceballos; Vazquez, Asensio, Mayoral

Numancia: Mohamedi; Adria, Gutuerrez, Calvo, Medina, Nieto, Sierra, Larrea, Perez, Milla, Marin

  • Numancia have won 4, drawn 3 and lost 3 out of the last 10.
  • In the last 10 games, Real Madrid have scored an average of 2.1 goals and have conceded an average of 1.2 goals.
  • In the last 10 games, Numancia have scored an average of 1.5 goals and have conceded an average of 1.5 goals.
  • There have been over 2.5 goals in 8 of the last 10 Real Madrid games.
  • There have been over 2.5 goals in 7 of the last 10 Numancia games.

Real Madrid v Numancia Prediction

Real Madrid will be looking to take their minds off the La Liga season, as Sunday’s 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo was yet another disappointing result. It is all going well in the Copa Del Rey however, so the team will be looking to keep that going.

Gareth Bale, Isco and Borja Mayoral all scored in the first leg but Bale and Isco may not be risked with a 3-0 lead. Even though Los Blancos do not need to win on the night, they are still expected to do so.

Match Report: Celta Vigo 2 - Real Madrid 2: Bale Brilliance Not Enough

Real Madrid have failed to close the gap on La Liga leaders Barcelona after a 2-2 draw away to Celta Vigo on Sunday evening. It is another poor result in a league season that is proving to be incredibly difficult for Zinedine Zidane and his men.

Gareth Bale was making his first start in La Liga since 20 September and it became apparent that he was very much needed. Celta Vigo went ahead in the match thanks to a goal from Daniel Wass. He was assisted by Iago Aspas, who has been in fantastic form so far this season.

It was then time for Bale to make his mark, just as he did in the Copa Del Rey win against Numancia through the week. The Welsh international scored twice in three minutes against Celta. The first goal was assisted by playmaker Toni Kroos, while Isco was the provider for the second, that put Real Madrid in front for the time being.

Los Blancos then had to survive a penalty scare, as Iago Aspas missed from the spot for Celta. He hit the target, but the spot kick was saved by Keylor Navas. That kept Real in front, but unfortunately it was not to last. Celta Vigo equalised when Maxi Gomez headed in from close range after Daniel Wass’ cross.

There was still time for both sides to try and claim a winner too. Celta appealed for another penalty when Aspas went down under a challenge from Marcelo but nothing was given on this occasion. Lucas Vazquez had a great chance to win the game for Real Madrid in the 90th minute but his shot was kept out by Celta goalkeeper Ruben Blanco.

This result leaves Real Madrid 16 points behind league leaders Barcelona. Los Blancos still have one game in hand, but the gap is simply looking too big to make up at the moment.

Zidane Expects Ronaldo To Retire At Real Madrid

Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane has said that he expects Cristiano Ronaldo to stay at Real Madrid for the rest of his career, until the Portuguese superstar is ready to retire. Hopefully that is still a few years away yet.

Ronaldo is constantly linked with other clubs and with the most recent rumour being that super rich Paris Saint Germain will make a bid for him, the Los Blancos boss has shrugged off any suggestion of Cristiano leaving the club any time soon. The reported bid from PSG is expected to come in the summer but it is extremely unlikely that Real would want to sell their star man.

Since signing with Real Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo has claimed 14 trophies with the team and has become the club’s record goalscorer. It has been one of the most successful signings that the club have ever made, if not the most successful.

Zidane Expects No Movement

In his press conference before the game against Celta Vigo, Zidane had this to say on the matter:

“I can’t imagine a Real Madrid without Cristiano, not at all.

“He’s a Madrid player and he wants to finish his career here. I don’t see him playing anywhere else.”

A return to Manchester United has been rumoured for a while but it does seem as if Cristiano Ronaldo is still happy at Real Madrid, and wants to win even more trophies, both collectively and individually. In 2017, Cristiano claimed his fifth Ballon d’Or and he will be looking to add to that record breaking number while still a Real Madrid player.

At 32 years old, it would appear that Ronaldo still has a good number of years left in him at the top level. This is mainly thanks to fantastic conditioning and looking after his fitness throughout his career. We hope that these future years are in the famous white shirt of Real Madrid.

Los Blancos currently sit in 4th place in La Liga, helped by the fact that 5th placed Sevilla suffered a defeat against Real Betis on Saturday. As there is a 6 point gap between Real Madrid and 3rd placed Valencia, a win against Celta Vigo really is needed. The hosts are down in 12th so far after a mixed start to the season.

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid Preview

Jonny should be fit to start at left-back for the hosts after picking up a hamstring niggle in midweek. It is not thought that it will keep him out here. Sergi Gomez should keep his place at centre back alongside Gustavo Cabral at centre-back for Celta, and they will hope to keep Ronaldo and co quiet. Stanislav Lobotka will play in midfield.

Dani Carvajal will miss this game through suspension, with Achraf filling in at right-back once again. Sergio Ramos has an injury problem too and will miss out which is a hugeblow for Real Madrid. Raphael Varane will be partnered by Nacho instead. Gareth Bale may lead the line with Cristiano Ronaldo, with Karim Benzema out injured.

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid Predicted Lineups

Celta Vigo (4-4-2): Blanco; Mallo; Gomez, Cabral, Jonny; Wass, Hernandez, Lobotka, Sisto; Gomez, Aspas

Celta Vigo v Real Madrid Prediction

Celta have done well against the league leaders Barcelona this season, drawing twice with them already. Juan Carlos Unzue’s men are good going forward so Zinedine Zidane will have to set his team up to be wary of the threats.

La Celeste have won just one of their last five matches though, so may not be full of confidence. They do have all of their big players available though, and Iago Aspas will be their key man yet again.

Real Madrid will be desperate to get back on track in La Liga as quickly as possible after their 3-0 El Clasico defeat to end 2017. If Los Blancos play at their best, it should be a victory. Gareth Bale will take confidence from marking his return with a goal against Numancia in the Copa Del Rey.

Match Report: Numancia 0 - Real Madrid 3: Real Ease To First Leg Lead

Real Madrid have claimed a strong first leg lead in the last 16 of the Copa Del Rey after a 3-0 win away to Numancia. Gareth Bale’s penalty set Los Blancos up for a comfortable victory.

Bale was returning from injury and the penalty 10 minutes before half time was his first goal in domestic action since September. Manager Zinedine Zidane had decided to make a number of changes from the last match before the winter break, resting most of his key men. This meant that Bale was one of the senior players expected to carry the team through.

He did just that, putting in a great leaders performance. For the penalty, the Welsh international sent goalkeeper Munir the wrong way to cooly put Real in front. The hosts had to play the last half an hour with just 10 men after Pape Maly Diamanka was shown a red card. Real Madrid still had to work for their win though, and Numancia were still in the game until very late on.

Los Blancos were given another penalty though, which substitute Isco put away for a 2-0 lead on the night. Borja Mayoral then pretty much put the tie out of Numancia’s reach with a very late header. Numancia are no pushovers and they proved that here. They are fifth in the Spanish second tier and were unbeaten since November.

The second leg of this tie is due to take place on Wednesday 10th January at the Santiago Bernabeu. It would be a monumental shock if Real Madrid lost a 3-0 lead from the first leg to a side in the Spanish second division, so a place in the Copa Del Rey quarter final should be secured. Real’s next fixture in La Liga takes place this Sunday, as Zinedine Zidane’s men travel to Celta Vigo for a big game.
