Real Madrid needed to win this game after the two defeats in a row suffered away. Los Blancos didn’t have any problems to beat (3-0) UD Las Palmas in an easy game. However, the team didn’t play well the first half and still have many problems. At least, they were able to get the three points, although Cristiano Ronaldo or Benzema couldn’t score again.

Zidane didn’t want to make many changes in the line-up and Luka Modric was the only one to have rest, with Asensio in his place. Vallejo also made his debut in La Liga because Varane has still some physical problems.

The game started with a very clear chance for Karim Benzema, who couldn’t beat Las Palmas goalkeeper alone in the box. It was the first chance for Benzema, who was booed by the supporters. UD Las Palmas reacted and Vitolo could also score in the 11th minute.

Los Blancos didn’t start well the game and the Canary team tried to take advantage. Cristiano Ronaldo awaked in the minute 27th and his shot touched the post. The Portuguese had another chance with a header in the 35th minute, but Los Blancos still had several problems to create danger in a poor first half. Luckily, before the half time the goal arrived with a header scored by Casemiro. This is the first goal of the season scored with the head by a Real Madrid player.

The second half didn’t start better for Los Blancos and Las Palmas claimed a couple of penalties but the referee didn’t whistle. In the 55th minute, Marco Asensio finally showed up and he scored a superb goal with a volley from outside the box. The best action of the game. Cristiano kept trying and he almost scored in the 69th, but it wasn’t again his evening. However, the Portuguese gave a superb assist to Isco in third goal. The game was over.

Zidane took the chance and introduced Marcos Llorente, Dani Ceballos or Lucas Vázquez, players that are not enjoying many minutes in this season. Real Madrid improved a lot in the second half and could score many more goals. For instance, Sergio Ramos hit the bar after a strange shot or the referee didn’t see a clear penalty committed to Nacho.

Cristiano Ronaldo said at Wembley after the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur that “all the players that left in summer made us stronger. Pepe, James, Morata… The guys are young and we feel the experience”, the Portuguese said in front of the journalist. Obviously, Cristiano was disappointed by their performance, but if we analyze the data we can say he’s completely right.

Florentino Pérez was certain about his new policy of signing young Spanish players to reinforce the squad and build a great team for the future. It had risks because some of them are not ready yet to compete at the higher level, as we are seeing these days. The players sold this summer participated in 13 games more than the ones who arrived. Besides, they scored 11 goals and gave 14 assists, whereas the signings have scored three goals and gave one assist.

Morata said recently that it was a mistake coming back to Madrid after his two years at Juventus. He’s now shining with Chelsea and some Real Madrid supporters miss their goals. Same scenario for Mariano Díaz, who is the topscorer at Olympique Lyonnais: “I spoke with him and he told me it was better to leave. If he had asked me to stay, perhaps I would have stayed”, Mariano admitted a conversation with Zinedine Zidane.

Pepe is also living a good season with Besiktas. Real Madrid made many mistakes at Wembley and Pepe is always a reliable player there. However, it’s true that Pepe didn’t want to sign a one-year-contract, so we can understand the club’s decision to make him leave. Jesús Vallejo, his replacement, has only played one game and he was sent off.

We have to be patient with the new signings, but Mayoral, Ceballos, Marcos Llorente, Theo Hernández, Jesús Vallejo or Achraf are not knocking down the door yet. Let’s see if they are able to enjoy more minutes in the next games.

A lot of this credit we should give it to Mauricio Pochettino.

Eriksen, Dele Alli or Harry Kane highlighted at Wembley, but they are all products of his coach. Real Madrid scouters know Mauricio Pochettino very well because he was on the list of possible Real Madrid coach when he was working at Espanyol, between 2009 and 2012. He could have been Mourinho’s replacement, but Pochettino was still very young and Real Madrid discarded him and signed Carlo Ancelotti, whereas Mauricio went to the Premier League.

He arrived in January 2013 to Southampton without speaking English and with a translator, something that arouse a lot of criticism. However, his football was superb, with some interesting players like Jay Rodríguez, Shaw, Schneiderlin or Wanyama, now in bigger clubs.

In 2014 he signed for Tottenham and his performances were getting better and better. For instance, in the last two season, the Spurs were the team getting more points in the Premier League, but they couldn’t touch silverware.

Pochettino is a genius working with the youngsters, and he’s been able to give confidence to Harry Kane or Dele Alli, who was playing for MK Donks only two seasons ago. During this time, the Spurs are not spending a lot of money in signings, more worried in building a new stadium, but the coach is able to make profitable these signings and work with the youngsters.

The result is a great team that was able to beat Real Madrid at Wembley. Could Pochettino be the next coach of Real Madrid?

After only three months, this team has changed a lot and the great performances are now forgotten, while the squad is struggling to beat any rival. There are enough symptoms to go off the alarms because the team is not working in La Liga and in the Champions League. Now we want to enumerate some of the issues causing this crisis.

Important Absences

Cristiano Ronaldo pointed out after the defeat against Tottenham Hotspur that Los Blancos are missing some players: “Pepe, Morata and James made us stronger […]. It’s not a worse squad, but it has less experience and the experience is very important”, Cristiano said at Wembley. Besides, there are key players injured like Carvajal, Bale and Mateo Kovacic, important absence in this team.

Attacking Issues

Obviously, there is a problem with the goal. Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema have only scored one goal in La Liga, with Marco Asensio as the topscorer. The French striker is far from his best level, being heavily criticized and this season he has not a substitute. Mayoral is not mature enough to play with Los Blancos, whereas Morata left in summer.

Conceding too many goals

Real Madrid showed a great defensive fragility at Wembley. Kiko Casilla is far from keeping Keylor Navas level. Besides, there is a big issue with the right and left back. Marcelo is not at his best and Achraf is too young, so the team is missing Dani Carvajal. Four clean sheets since the start of the season is not enough for a big club.

The Midfield is not the best of the world

The problems arrive also to the midfield. Especially Toni Kroos and Luka Modric are not showing a great level. They are very slow, unable to move the ball very quickly as they used to do it. Besides, there aren’t relevant substitutes because Zidane is not giving many minutes to Llorente or Ceballos.

Zidane and mistakes in the formation

Zidane chose to play with three defenders in the second half against Tottenham or Girona. This never works. Besides, he’s not finding solutions on the bench, like it happened last season. The new signings are not having enough weight in the squad, whereas some veterans like Lucas Vázquez is not highlighting when he’s in the line-up.

Real Madrid are struggling in these last days of the season and they were defeated again at Wembley against Tottenham Hotspur. The supporters are worried, but Zidane is confident to solve this situation and he’s denying the problems: “We are not in crisis”, the French said in press conference.

The analysis is that we played against a better team and we have to accept it. Don’t think twice. We did a bad game. We had chances to draw, but as it’s happening lately, we didn’t find the goal”.

One of the big problems of the team is the attacking line: “Everyone can have their opinion. I don’t think we’re blocked. There are moments during the season that you can score a lot of goals with few chances and sometimes don’t. Lately it’s happening this thing. We had chances to draw, but the ball didn’t want to go in. The defeat is normal because we played against a team that was better than us. There are two defeats but I have a team with experience. They are champions. We are going to chance this”.

Real Madrid were defeated again in the Champions League (3-1) against Tottenham Hotspur in the first visit in their history to Wembley. The Spurs will top this group, while Los Blancos have to improve a lot if they want to reach the Last 16 round. The feelings are very negative and the team is not working. Zidane must find solutions as soon as possible to solve this crisis.

Real Madrid started with the possession of the ball, trying to control the game and look for the rival’s goal. However, in the midfield they weren’t accurate and Modric, Kroos and Casemiro lost some dangerous balls. Kane tried in the 10th minute but he found Casilla. It was a very interesting game in these first 20 minutes, but there was no signal from Benzema or Cristiano Ronaldo.

Los Blancos weren’t playing well and they were unable to create any danger. The problems arrived with the goal in the minute 27th scored by Dele Alli after a perfect cross from Trippier, who was in offside. Real Madrid tried to react and Casemiro had the first chance in the 29th but Lloris saved it. Ronaldo finally showed up twice, and incredibly he missed a clear chance after a good assist from Achraf. The best moments of Los Blancos arrived after conceding the goal.

Real Madrid arrived now with a lot of danger, but also the Spurs tried to score the second and Harry Kane had his best chance, but Ramos saved it. Just one minute after, Benzema also found Lloris after a shot from outside the box. It was a thrilling game, but Real Madrid were deserving the draw, with Cristiano also having another chance after an assist from Benzema.

Zidane changed the formation in the half time with three defenders and Marcelo and Achraf as wingers. Marcelo put a very dangerous cross from the left but he didn’t find anybody. After this, Dele Alli took the ball, dribbled Casemiro and his shot touched in Sergio Ramos and went into the goal. Very unlucky goal and 2-0 in the 57th minute. Zidane’s side tried to react and it was amazing how the ball didn’t enter in the goal after a free kick in the 62nd. It wasn’t Real Madrid’s evening.

It could get even worse. In the 65th minute, Kane lead a perfect counter-attack and Eriksen nail down the three points. Terrible evening for Los Blancos. The changes arrived very late. In the 73rd minute, Asensio and Mayoral came in, with Wembley singing “Olé, Olé”. Asensio improved the performance of the team and Cristiano could finally score in the 80th minute. There were 10 minutes for a miracle and they kept trying but it was too late. The mistakes are punished against big teams and Real Madrid need to improve a lot. There is a big crisis after so many successes.

Zinedine Zidane spoke in press conference at Wembley before facing Tottenham Hotspur in the fourth week of the Champions League group stage. The manager is calm after the shocking defeat in Girona.

Actually, the French coach thinks that this wasn’t their worst game: “I don’t think it was the worst match with me. It’s football. As we all know, when you lose is for something. We didn’t do it great. We were winning 1-0, and they surprised us. Now this is over and we have a game to come back as we know. Nothing changes in our mind. We have to give everything and try to win the game”.

According to the manager, the team is ready again: “We are fine. Mentally you can think we are bad after the defeat, but don’t. We are thinking in tomorrow’s game. And physically we are fine. It’s a great scenario, in front there is a great team and we hope to do a great game”.

The situation is quite tough for Los Blancos in La Liga: “I have the same excitement, the same passion. The most important thing is the work. During a season there are special moments, but I like this challenge and we have a good game to win again. I like when things get difficult because life is like this. We want to win again”.

This will be the first time Los Blancos play at Wembley: “It’s a good venue to make a great game against a very good rival. We like these kind of games and I’m sure the players will be ready. Not without complications, but ready to make a good game. The players feel where they are. It’s a beautiful stadium to play football. […] I played at the old Wembley and it was a great feeling. I’m not going to be that lucky but the players will”.
